hi zac (and zac's mom!)

my name is sterling - my father ran into your father in ventura harbor a few weeks before your scheduled departure and i've been following your blog since.

anyhow, i just wanted to leave you a note of encouragement. i'm really impressed with all you've done and you've inspired me to get back into sailing. with luck, i'll be on another wednesday night boat in MDR soon.

i do have one question though - why aren't you fishing much? it seems like that would be a great way to entertain yourself / pass the time and supplement your dwindling fresh food supply.

cheer!

Mrs. Sunderland,

I already sent my letter to Zac at the address you posted. I think it will be OK. I have lived in many towns where if the mail coming to you is posted as ‘General Delivery’ or as a boat name with the town and zip, it usually is sitting at the post office just waiting for you.

Funny - I like the idea of having Zac’s hair cut at the dock when he gets back, but it would sure be long! What’s that guy’s name who caught his hair in the tree while riding his horse, in the scriptures? Maybe two hair events where he gets his hair cut at the halfway point and again, when he arrives at MDR.

Zac, it is refreshing to see you include the boats and new friends you are meeting along the way. Anyone who has spent time at sea, understands that time can, at times, stand still and those people you meet along the way will more than likely, become life long friends.

Thanks for the journey,
Jerry

Zac,

I saw someone ask the question of whether you have found yourself sea sick at all since the start of this trip.

I don't recall seeing you mention that, either.

So, maybe your mom or yourself can mention this bit of info. I've read that even people who do long distance sailing routinely get sick, if only for the first two or so days.

But seasickness (motion sickness) can totally disable a person... so its an important subject to understand for everyone following your sail adventure because you have nobody to help if/when you're sick.

Hi Zac, I doubt you ever get sea sick, however you more than likely will get land sick. After all that time at sea, in swells, etc. you well might be land sick and happy to get back aboard shortly after you land. I had land sickness, it really is not like sea sickness, in as much as you only feel somewhar dizy, not sick.
Anyway, I'm sure you are looking forward to making landfall. I hope your trip is uneventful from here on in. (bad event I'm talking about). Happy travels.

Hello Zac,

Just wanted to include my name in the large list of people who have sent a post card. Zac should receive a post card from me with a picture of his departing point in Marina Del Rey. Hopefully he'll get a smile out of seeing this beautiful place and will be inspired to come back into MDR on his return trip back home.

Marianne,
Thanks for the update. It's always appreciated to see a post by you if Zac has been too busy to get his post done. I don't worry so much about him if we get a "shout" out from his mum letting us know that he's been in communication with someone!

Zac,

Hope you start catching more wind soon, the NOAA forecasts an East wind 10-15 knots over the next few days with 6-7 ft seas in the area you are now entering.

Hopefully Intrepid's electrical problem can be resolved in Majuro. Have you considered putting up another wind generator and/or carrying a spare? Maybe a spare solar panel regulator too.

Hang in there Zac, you're doing great!

Fair winds,

Steve from OC

Ummmm ... has there been an unannounced change of destination? Drawing a great circle from the July 21 position to Tarawa, Kiribati sure nicely fits the positions reported from the 22nd through the 27th.

Zac,

Always good to see that you're doing well, even if it's just a note from Marianne and a position update. I meant to comment in my previous post that if you replace your I-pod, you might consider a Nano. The solid state "flash" architecture might be more agreeable in a marine environment. At the very least, no moving parts makes it well suited to active lifestyles. The down side is that the Nano maxes out at 8Gig.

Personally I use both - I have the 80Gig for the bulk of my collection and a subset on my Nano.

Hope all is well...

Cheers!

May I ask that you include a subject line along with each posting? I read the blog via an RSS feed and each posting is simply entitled, "Untitled".

I'm really enjoying keeping up with Zac on his adventure.

Cheers,

Greetings Zac,

My 7 year old son (Simeon) and I have been tracking your progress. We live in Colorado Springs, CO (about as landlocked as you can get) at the base of Pikes Peak. Simeon has been tracking your route on his globe, as he was in Brazil several weeks ago with me on a work trip. His sense of adventure and zest for life is very similar, what a great inspiration you are to him (and dad as well). You are in our prayers brother!

Ciao!

Tim and Simeon

Hi Zac and Marianne and everyone. I remember putting Marshall islands on my postcard thinking it might end up on the US mainland!(Anything is possible from NZ :-)
I'm hooked on Zacs blog and I just love to read all of the posts ...Zac it looks like you have a lot of seasoned sailors and armchair sailors as well looking in on your progress!
Interesting that your Dad is from Lymington ...I'm about to google it but from memory it is a famous sailing port in Britain is it not?
All the best,
