Mom/Zac Post

Since there is a lot going on these days I asked Zac if he minded me making a post on his behalf. Always happy to get out of work, he happily agreed. You all probably don't believe me, do you? You think that Zac is this super teen who always does what he is supposed to? Just joking...but it is a big team effort to get him where he needs to be with the supplies and equipment he needs etc. Laurence and Zac are trying to determine what issues there may be with the engine. They are going through systems on the phone making certain that Zac has everything in place for the rest of this leg. They are planning what jobs/repairs need to be done in Darwin. I am coordinating with people in Darwin regarding customs, immigration, marinas, boatyards, hotels etc. I have been quizzing Zac on his route through the Torres Strait. Somehow I feel better if I know it also...doesn't really make sense. Zac is in communication with routers, meteorologists, authors and people who have just done it before.
Please know that we get a lot of emails everyday. I forward all of the fan mail to Zac on the boat. He cannot receive photos of any kind or attachments. Email size can be no more than 10kb. There are sometimes many days that go by and he hasn't picked up his mail for various reasons. He definitely doesn't have time to answer very many. He really enjoys getting them so please feel free to send but don't be too dissappointed if you don't hear back from him right away.

Note from Zac:
I had another really good night. No ships and no squalls. It is still hard to sleep deeply because I am afraid I might sleep through an alarm. I am running low on rain water so am hoping for another squall to refill them. I have made a slight course change on to my next waypoint and now I am running with it more which is more comfortable. I am studying my cruising guides and preeping for my run through the Strait. I have entered a bunch of waypoints into my GPS so I can track my route from anywhere on the boat. I am feeling pretty confident that with all the planning and preparation I will be fine.
Cheers,
Zac

PS: From Rory's blog comment questions:

Q: What's the ocean smell like?
A: I don't really smell anything. Some people say that your sense of smell is improved but I have not noticed that - yet.
Q: Do U smell diesel fuel or only when the engines are running?
A: Only when the engines are running.
Q: Do U run your engine daily to recharge the batteries?
A: No, I have only run my engine to recharge my batteries a few times. With all of the wind I have been having, I have more than enough generated by my wind generator and solar panels.
Q: Many kid's think that once the sun sets it's all storms, lightning, and nasty seas. Please clarify.
A: (laughing) Sometimes it is but it varies everyday.
Q: Is it warm enough for a salt water shower?
A: Probably but I haven't had one. I have had showers and washed my hair in a rain storm from a squall a few times.
Q: Is the chair at the tiller comfortable to sit in for long spells?
A: It isn't really a chair but it is comfortable.
Q: How much water U have for food/drink.
A: Lots
Q: Do U talk to yourself?
A: No
Q: Do U have good sound system? Tunes cranked?
A: I have an excellent sound system. I have played the same CD over 100 times because my ipods are dead.
Q: If U could have one piece of equipment on board that U don't have currently have, what would it be?
A: A new ipod!

PPS: If you didn't know that there are comments at the end of each blog, you are missing out on some great fun!

great postings!! just love following along with you Zac! Thanks to your mom for her input it is always appreciated!!

To those of you looking to rent that movie White Squall.... I saw it on TV and I bawlled my head off - please be aware that it is not for everyone especially if you're a wimp and worried about Zac. I think watching it AFTER he comes home may be best!!! Just my thoughts (there's a part in there where it breaks your heart when this guy just wants to go home and can't! omg! I couldn't watch it while Zac's out there... just me)

Love all the input from the Zac Pac! I think we should all collectively wear the T-shirts on his birthday!!

To Zac:
Have you ever been scared out there?
Are you still sleeping on the floor?
Have you had contact from Bethany?
Do you use sunscreen everyday?
Do you think you would ever do this again?
I'm sitting in my very still chair and wondering exactly how you deal with constant movement...?

Thank you Zac, for sharing your journey!!!!

Blessings from Canada

Zac,

Yes sleeping through a horizon check can be a scary prospect. After countless water logged kitchen timers and watches that weren't loud enough, we found this :
http://astore.amazon.com/ccc-billabong-20/detail/B000I6PD8U/002-0656467-8764854

It has a countdown mode that can be set to what ever time you want (we use 15 minutes in "busy areas" and 30 minutes in more remote areas) and it is water resistant with an Indiglo backlight.

The best part is you can reset it quickly after you do your horizon check, and you get x more minutes (of peaceful bliss).

We've used it the lat 15,000 miles of our trip and have found it worth every penny. I can even catnap like a single hander and know I'll wake up when needed. When it's rough and the background noise is loud I put in under a cap to make sure I'll hear it!! It also has daily timers and a regular clock that we use for radio schedules.

Hope it helps

Chris

ps. I read the recent reviews and am not sure why the submarine captain doesn't use the countdown mode instead of the stopwatch.. oh well.

pps. looking forward to more position reports when you get safe!!

Ok, Mom, give him a break. It's supposed to be him solo trip and you can't and shouldn't try to do it for him by remote or radio control.

You've been a great mom in this endeavor and we love and respect you, but if Zac is not capable of making a solo voyage alone (?) you should not have allowed it in the first place.

You know the truth more than anyone and have convinced us admirers of the entire Sunderland team. Take a deep breath and relax. It's all good and our prayers is that it'll only get better.

Hi Zak,L and MA..
Dusty Way here. As you know, I am living in South Australia at this time.. Thoughts on the Yanmar: I have had trouble a few times delivering boats with starting the motor issues. Often turned out, the owners used too much fuel additive with the diesel fuel and that made any rubber, as in gaskets, fuel lines etc. start to erode and clog fuel flow somewhere along the way making start up, an off and on affair.. Good luck to all. Cheers, Dusty

Marianne, again as always thanks for the update. But, you mean to say Saint Zac isn't absolutely perfect and without fault? Say it ain't so! :) Hey, if skipping some blogs helps give Zac more time to rest and / or prepare for what lies ahead, I say go for it. Don't worry about us Zac Pac-ers. We'll be fine, especially if there is an occasional note from Mom saying "all's well".

Zac, glad it was a good night for you - I hope there are more so you'll get nice and rested. As for the alarm, it might not be too hard to rig a "sleeve tug" mechanism such that when the alarm goes off you could get a physical alert as well, gentle shock maybe or an actual tug; harder to sleep through both sound and physical input... However, I suspect your brain is well trained, maybe better than you think, to respond to that AIS alarm...

Cheers - hope you found Sheila Net!

Hello Zac & Everyone,

Again we have to thank Mom for stepping in for Zac. I hope Laurence and Zac will find the issues with the engine. I'm sure so much is going on behind the scenes right now. It's fun to hear Mom wanting to know exactly where Zac is at and actually memorizing all the way point by heart also. A Mom's job is never done.

It was great that Zac answered all those questions on today's blog. Hopefully more people will join the comment section of the blog and learn all kinds of new stuff.

I'm glad to hear so many people are going to rent White Squall. I was surprised to hear so many people writing in about White Squall on yesterday's blog. Please remember this was based on A True Story. If you need any information about the movie many people posted blogs yesterday so just go back to yesterdays comments on the blog. Thanks everyone who posted information on White Squall. In case your asking I'm not Jeff Bridges just loved the movie so much!!!

I hope the entire Sunderland family will have some sort of peace in their hearts and minds while Zac is navigating these tougher times across the Straits. We'll be praying for your safe passage Zac and the whole Sunderland family.

Zac,

Wow, you are an incredible young man. I think by the time you complete this journey you are going to be amazed by how large your "family" has become. We are all so proud of you for what you are doing ... setting the bar high for all of us, kids and adults alike. I'm not sure how your parents are going to handle it when one of your siblings come up with a big plan like this!!

Since I'm not a sailor (I've been on a sailboat three times!) I have no idea of the lingo but my imagination can kick in. Based on the posts, I must (MUST) watch the movie White Squall to gain better knowledge. So all I can say is keep doing what you are doing as it seems that is working well. Perhaps a new Ipod or some new cd's on your next stop will be worthy investments.

Prayers and good thoughts constantly coming your way from Minneapolis! Linnae

Thank you for the update - especially in these busy times. Zac - you are SO covered in prayer! And it sounds like you and your family have done/are doing everything you can to prepare - God will do His part. Torres Strait - BRING IT! God is greater.

If we had a Darwinian address, we could send you some CD's. Although, I imagine, a few people there might help you get hooked up with some tunes.

What in the world have you listened to 100x I might be interested to know???

Anyway - Smooth sailing to you, Cap'n!

Thanks Marianne. I have to admit I laughed out loud, "playing the same
CD over 100 times"...I mean this, I hope it is one you like. I can remember playing many "albums" over 100 times...like wearing them out!
Zac, Thank god you don't have an address in Darwin, there would be 20 empty Ipods waiting for you. It's the tune list that nobody but you know. I have a girlfriend in Darwin with 3 children a little older than you, the Aussie music scene is very well, Aussie. You can't download even attachments,
but you could download from Itunes, prepaid, while in Darwin...but we have no list and duplications would be easy to make if more than one person did it.
Just thinking out loud here,
also happy to hear you got another good night's sleep. BTW, if I forget to tell you, my friends tell me there is a market in Darwin on Thursday night, everyone goes to it, food stalls, music, flea market...only on Thursday.
Anyway...the tune list?

Hi Zac,
Thanks for answering questions I didn't think to ask! :/
My comment about sticking earbuds in your ears to listen to anything:
way 'back in the day', when listening to music, by yourself with earphones first started, I decided I didn't want to becauxe it shut me off from people around me (like when I would go walking on the local bike/walk path).
I still don't do it, and recommend you don't either, on your sail around the world, you might miss something important! Music is a gift, but how about just in the background,(go ahead, play it LOUD)but not capturing your entire hearing sense. Enough 'Mom' talk.

Have a great day/night, Dearheart!
God bless you and your family with His Glorious grace and peace,

Hey Mom, Zac's going around the world, will ONLY be accomplished as a team. In design engineering the level of work and attention to detail to bring a product to market is phenomenal. The number of people who work together and the length of time and effort necessary to carve out of this tending to chaos world a workable item is immense. I'm sure that this endeavor requires a level of work for the entire team beyond what most of us can imagine; otherwise, it might have happened before in history. It might be a good post at some time to mention all those unspoken workers. I have read many of the posts and comments and have not noticed this but if it has been done, please forgive my oversight. Great work Team Intrepid.

Hello Everyone,

Here is a new picture of me in front of the Tall Ship named Surprise. This ship was used in the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm wearing my Indigo Zac t-shirt but you really can't tell in this picture. I thought the picture of Surprise was more important than reading the t-shirt I was wearing. Even like this I couldn't get the whole ship into the picture.

I guess you can't please everyone in this world Mom. It was great that you actually posted FrogPond blog. Take it in stride and don't worry what other people think. If we listen to other people's opinions our lives would be forever altered in a way that would make us uncomfortable and most likely very sad. I admire FrogPond for speaking her mind but this blog isn't for criticisms to Mom or the rest of the Sunderland family. This blog was designed to bring Zac's spirits up and have Zac see that people from all over the world are rooting for him to accomplish this amazing journey that he himself decided to accomplish. Hopefully everyone here will remember this.

This was not written to offend anyone. I would like to keep this blog positive for Zac and the entire family. Let's all do the same and it will be a great blog. I love reading peoples questions, comments, and how most bloggers here help each other out. This is the spirit we want here and why it was created in the first place.

Cheers to Everyone,

Without being a know it all, diesel engines are so simple in their function that problems almost always have to do with the fuel system....water in the fuel, clogged filters/injectors, crappy fuel in general.
Wow...a teenager who isn't perfect, or course that's not the teenagers opinion...after all they know everything....don't they?

I think the main reason Zac isn't posting his position right now is that he's near Indonesia, which is a hot-spot for piracy.

Mom,
Ignore the naysayers who say to relax and butt out. And for those people, even with his SSR, sat phone, weather station, etc., ultimately the only person Zac can rely on is himself, and it's obviously worked well for him so far.

To All Nay-Sayers’ –

As you can see by Marianne posting any and all of your comments that she can stand up and take a punch and is a brave woman. Unlike many, if not all of the nay-sayers whom post from “anonymous” ID’s, that alone says a lot about both sides of the equation.

Frustratingly, the nay-sayers pop in and out without reading, which is compounded by a convoluted thinking, honestly…

The jibs-n-jabs range from “Why did you let him go, you’re a horrible parent”, to “Why are you helping him out, he should be 110% alone, you are a bad parent”…

Do you realize how conflicted that is?

The Sunderland’s aren’t a family trying to gain fame from their “athlete” child.

The Sunderland’s are a family that believes in living their dreams and doing whatever it takes to help each other and each of them fulfill their dreams and living their lives to the fullest while here on this crazy and sometimes wonderful earth (more crazy than not).

There is GREAT sacrifice going on right now in the Sunderland family, and a tremendous amount of work to plan and execute a dream and goal of this magnitude…

Watch some of the video clips, just maaaaaaaaaaaaybe, you’ll get a better feel of who the Sunderland’s really are…

A few thoughts for the nay-sayers:

#1 - I would rather see a 16 year old alone at sea than with a crowd on the streets of L.A. or about any other major U.S. city, just pick a name and pull the stats…

#2 - The lessons a young man will learn by being alone on the sea will be far greater than about any other adventure, whatever it might be, med-school, law-school, etc… Not to say that when Zac completes his trip, he won’t do that too (Med or Law School)…

In fact, I am very very very (that’s 3 very’s) sure that Zac will accomplish a great many things in his lifetime on earth and will likely touch many more lives that all of us combined quite possibly, he’s passed me up already when I was 16 and I’m no slouch by any means…

#3 - You live once, great people take risks, without risks, we would all still be in Europe and America wouldn’t be discovered. Without risks, the scientist of the dark ages would have bowed down to the Catholic church and we’d still be in the dark ages… Without risk, by guys like Martin Luther, the Apollo Astronauts, the entrepreneurs of America, etc.. wouldn’t have put their lives on the line, and we would be living in the dark ages still…

#4 – You may not like risks, and you may be highly risk adverse, which is fine, it’s your comfort zone, but it’s just not very eloquent of you to post messages on a blog of which you are ill-informed or are not of the mental mind-set (not meant to insult, meaning, “it ain’t your thing man…) and be negative of a family and family love and adventure that you don’t or can’t seem to quite understand…

You have every right to communicate what you desire (oh, that was another “risk” that our forefathers took, life-death, freedom of speech), but when you do feel the need to criticize, I would like suggest that you really think about it before you hit submit and make sure you really understand the full set of circumstances that are at play here, because they are quite different that what my causally meet the eye…

Regards to you all,

Daveh

To Karen about the depth of the Torres Strait. There's a good depth map of the area at http://www.cmar.csiro.au/datacentre/torres/AFMA1980_2003/DVDVer102/Metadata/afma0696_metadata2.pdf

Real Mothers don't eat quiche; they don't have time to make it.

Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils are probably in the sandbox.

Real Mothers often have sticky floors, filthy ovens and happy kids.
Real Mothers know that dried play dough doesn't come out of shag carpets.

Real Mothers don't want to know what the vacuum just sucked up.
Real Mothers sometimes ask 'Why me?' and get their answer when a little voice says, 'Because I love you best.'

Real Mothers know that a child ' s growth is not measured by height or years or grade...It is marked by the progression of Mama to Mom to Mother...

8 YEARS OF AGE - My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!

12 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.

14 YEARS OF AGE - Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either.

16 YEARS OF AGE - Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.

18 YEARS OF AGE - That old woman? She's way out of date!

25 YEARS OF AGE - Well, she might know a little bit about it .

35 YEARS OF AGE - Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.

45 YEARS OF AGE - Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?

65 YEARS OF AGE - Wish I could talk it over with Mom.

The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly
gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!

Zac & all,

I've been reading on your progress now and again since I first heard about your trip on the radio. All I can say is that you're an amazing young man!

You can add one more person to the list of those praying for your safe journey!

We certainly understand all the details and arrangements that are required everytime Zac hits land. Zac's needs and requirements come first.

It sounds like things are going well. I'll wish for a water drenching squall in the next day to replenish your water supply.

Thought of you more today than others so I sent up some extra prayers for you today. I'm so proud of all the precautions and staging you have done for this leg of the trip. You seem like you've thought of everything. Stay strong...we are all so impressed by you!

No GPS / GOOGLE Positions until Zac clears a piracy area, the Sunderland's don't want to broadcast his exact pin-point location...

I suspect that his "current possition" will be back to being updated in the not too distant future...

Until then... we wait... and we wait....

Hi Zac from a fellow Californian (Santa Clarita.) I saw you sail out of MDR and am really enjoying your blog as I follow along on your journey. As a sailor (and powerboater) and having been caught in storms (both ocean & on Lake Michigan,) I can imagine somewhat what it's like. I had to laugh at the question about talking to yourself. Glad to hear it's no. You are talking to your boat, aren't you?

By the way, Mark & Brian have been keeping their radio audience updated on your journey. If you'd like, I can get their email address and forward it to you. I'm sure they'd enjoy getting emails from you (when possible.)

Fair winds & calm seas!

Jeff

P.S. Hang in there Mom!!

And may I add, Rory, you are missing out on some great people. Getting to know the Zac Pac is an incredible experience and I learn so much.

So, Zac, thanks for bringing us all together to pray for you and to get to know each other. What fun it is !!

Hi Zac.
Guess you are getting close. Hope everything is prepared und you are well rested. How is the engine doing? Everything will be just fine - I am sure.
To Marianne.
It's amazing how calm you respond to some e-mail. I would have blown up already.
To Dave:
Great post you did. I also raed a German boating forum - try to explain somne things to them about Zac but I guess it's a German nature that everything needs to be seen negative in the beginning. That's why they never get a real AC team together LOL

To all position seekers:
We will not get a postion for at least the next 7 - 10 days. It is a SECURITY issue. Look up PNG and you may understand.

Daveh,
I echo your remarks.
As for the coordinates/location not being posted (a common question by many); it has been stated here before that as soon as it is safe to do so, Zac will post his coordinates.

There have been numerous inquiries on the blog "Comments" related to lack of position data the past few
weeks. I believe these questions
are coming from people who read
only the Blog itself and skip the
comments, in which the issue has
been detailed repeatedly. It would
probably cut down on such
inquiries if Zac/Mom would place a
statement of "No positions till
next landfall, due to safety
concerns" in one of the official
blog postings.

Hi Zac and all!!

I am a faithful reader to your blogs and faithful reader of all the Zac Pack's comments. This has become and every day routine for me!! I haven't met one person of the Zac Pack, but I feel like I know many of you!! And of course I don't know Zac either, but I consider him one of my family members, because I pray for him everyday in my nightly prayers!! I would like to thank Karen for her update on the Pacific Magazine in the Marshall Islands. You all may want to check out her articles on Zac, they are terrific.

Zac keep up the good work and we'll all be relieved when you are in Darwin!!

Happy Sailing,

Debbie

Dear Zac and Mom,

I am also now checking the blog postings every day and have passed on the link to all the sailors in my life. Those of us that are moms are especially blown away! Loved the description of the "team effort" it is taking to pull this off. May you have lots of rainwater AND a good sleep.

TO: Daveh
RE: Message to Naysayers

Thank you very much for those comments. I find it mystifying that people are being critical of Zac's pursuit or his family's support of his dream.

You made some things perfectly clear and put it into perspective. Your participation in this group is valuable.

Why do these 'naysayers' tune in here in the first place? If Zac's activities make them nervous and anxious, there's an easy solution. I will not state the obvious.

We'll all reach a point in our 'maturity' where we will spend more time regretting the things we didn't do that regretting the things that we did. Zac will experience this much less than the average ... and he'll appreciate even more (if that's possible) the fantastic family that prepared him then allowed him to try his own wings. I wish that I'd had parents more like Zac's and hope that I am providing even an infinitesmial degree of the support to my children that Marianne and Laurence are providing to theirs. I expect that the entire tribe of little Sunderlands will grow up to be fine citizens of this country.

Now naysayers, lighten up, loosen up, and don't get your knickers in a snitch. Watch the sunrises and sunsets with Zac or go watch more TV. The Brady Bunch is still in reruns. You may even be able to find the Cheech & Gong Show, if you can handle the excitement.

Thanks for the answers. So hopefully with the charging system working so well U can now pimp out your ride with a fridge/deep freeze in Darwin.

When U arrive in Oz U gotta try a "Works Burger"! It's awesome. It's a full branch beef burger with streaky bacon, lettuce, tomatoe, fried egg, melted cheese, pickles, and beet root. The beet root is a bit of shocker for Americans but it's symphonic explosion of artery clogging sinful goodness.

Got an address in OZ yet?

Hang in there. Zac will be stronger for all the problem- solving he has to manage - which seems to be more challenging than the sailing itself. Frankly, my heart had been in my throat while reading his posts! He has more guts than me...
