New Media Links

Zac is well on his way and settling in. He is working on his blog but has limited computer time due to low power because of the cloudy skies and light winds (and running his fridge too long!)

There are a couple of interesting media links that I thought you all might enjoy. One is an interview we did with Sunrise 7 which is Australia's Good Morning America. The other is the final article from Karen Earnshaw in Majuro.

Enjoy!

My t-shirt arrived this morning! I got a huge one so it will go over my pregnant belly when it gets big. I can't believe I'll go through this whole pregnancy and probably my maternity leave and Zac will still be sailing. It seems like such a long time!

I loved all the news from Majuro and want to know how you like the makwon. Be careful on this next leg and I'm looking forward to reading your impressions of Majuro, the people, and your experiences getting to Oz. Smooth sailing!

Wow, Zac! Excellent segment on Sunrise 7. And yet another good write up in Pacific magazine. Nice gifts from the Marshall's Women's organization. Go lite on the drinking coconut until your stomach is calm... :)

The "makwon" sounds interesting. Never heard of it; share a description when you next have a chance in your blog.

Hi zac! We are aT.O. family been here 50 yrs. You remind me of our son, at your age when he was into Scuba Diving at such a young age, he & his Dad took up the sport together! We are a Navy family, & it goes back, to 1800's or more! We read your blog ea. day & pray for your safe journey! We are very proud of you & your family! I took your information into Trader Joe's in W.L. to share their dried pineapple you were yearning for & your grandmothers comment re: the T.J.'s rice to add to your canned chicken! I had to share that with them! Keep on keeping on! C.C.

It was great to hear from you Marianne. I feel like I go through withdrawals and a little anxiety when the next day posts aren't there!! Thank you so much for the links. I felt better this morning and enjoyed the terrific article and video. I too feel like I have known you guys for years, and have great confidence that Zac can accomplish this leg with his remarkable knowledge. I'm glad you had a wonderful time in Majuro and it sounds like you made many friends and will have memories of your stay to keep your mind occupied while moving on the Australia. I bet it was hard to leave a place that you were so obviously welcomed and admired. I am sure Darwin is waiting for your arrival with much excitement. Sail on Zac, you are an inspiration.

Until we hear from you again., (And I hope it's soon!)

Man, great video footage, nice interviews, etc…

Zac, I clocked a floating winch handle, red I believe… Be careful with those, yes they are lighter and float, but they have been known to break and I’ve actually seen one under a lot of load break of and the trimmer’s arm was impaled with what was left in the winch…

Personally, I’m not a big fan of them, but I guess if they are new and not in the sun all the time (plastics break down under UV’s we all know) you’ll be good. IF however, they show any signs of wear, swap them out each leg for sure…

Funny thing about floating which handles though… Does anyone in a race or long long trip really take the time and effort to turn around and retrieve the bloody thing!?!?!?

Perfect one tip from Dad/Lawrence too, complacency will be a challenge… Zac, if you find that happening, tell yourself to “snap out of it”… We all know stories about complacency, not good…

Sail on!

Zac, be alert in Torres Strait.

"So dangerous & intricate is the navigation of these straits, that we were buffeting about a whole week, before we had completely cleared them. Our passage was impeded by numerous shoals, sandy keys, and small islands, under shelter of which we generally brought up during the night." -- Midshipman David Renouard, Matavy Tender, 1791.

To team Sunderland:
Thanks again for all the updates. We thoroughly enjoyed the Sunrise 7 link and the Pacific magazine article.
The photos of Zac look great. There is already a much more mature look on his face, compared with the initial photo on the homepage of the blog.
We will anxiously await Zac's response to the taste of "makwon" and the coconuts.
Realizing that this portion of the journey will require alot of concentration, we understand that Zac may be limited in the time he has for the blog.
Marianne, your posts relaying Zac's adventure is most appreciated and we for one look forward to it.
Zac, take care of yourself and take your dad's advice to heart.
We are all with you and anxiously look forward to your next landing.

Zac:

So our journey continues. I'm sure that all of your blog entourage is ready and raring to go. We all look forward to things settling into a routine such that you can return to personal blog entries. Your mom, the Queen of the Zac-Pac-ers, has done a wonderful job of keeping us up to date on your adventures in Majuro. May all of your ports of call be so interesting and hospitable.

To Marianne:

Thanks for the two links to Sunrise7 and the Pacific Magazine. Both were satisfying. Also you may have heard an old joke as: "You should go into broadcasting. You have the perfect face for radio!" Well, that does not apply to you and Laurence. You are a handsome and photogenic couple. It's easy to imagine you producing a young man like Zac, and there are what? 6 more waiting in the wings? I'm sure they'll all be extraordinary citizens.

All of us out here are looking forward to Bandacorp finishing the "Intrepid" page and getting it activated. We are curious to more about Zac's noble and faithful "steed". Hi Yo Intrepid and awaaaaay!!

Look forward to this leg of the voyage and the adventures that'll get Zac to Australia.

Hello Marianne
We have not heard from Zac since he landed on this blog. The videos and stuff are nice but what about the people who have been following Zac's words and voice (writing voice)since he left on his trip? The same thing happened in Hawaii not a word to his bloggers tell he got back on his boat. Couldn't he have taken a few minutes out of his day to get on a computer at the hotel? Second hand information is second hand information and now his batteries arn't working. My son said now that he is popular and is getting a lot of attention at his stops he forgets the ones who support him. He said arn't blogs written by bloggers? Anyway, I have said my peace. To Charlie:

You remind me an ole phrase; “give ‘em an inch, and they’ll want a mile”…

We should consider ourselves fortunate that we are this “intimate” in this adventure and are this day to day close at all!

Yet here you are today, complaining that while Zac is on land he doesn’t “personally” post to the blog…

Jeeeezzzzzzzeeeeeeeee, can’t Zac be a REGULAR old 16 year old SOMTIEMS and not have responsibilities 7X24???

While a sailing adventure like this might sound like it’s just a big old relaxing event, 2-3 weeks at sea wears your body, mind, emotions and spirit down, BIG TIME, speaking from very personal experience.

Frankly, after 3 weeks at sea, the first few days a lot of people get a reverse sea-sickness because their equilibrium isn't used to NOT moving and just don’t feel very well expect when they are sleeping…

Ryno is watching Zac from Nome, Alaska, while the rest of the family are tuning in from Southern Texas. Thank you for sharing! Kerrie from Tomball, TX

To Charley:

mother to mother... use this time to teach your son that there are many other responsibilities for Zac. You sound like you are getting frustrated just because you can't access someone else's life! It takes quite a while to get the sea legs back even though he has never mentioned getting sea sick. He also has many adjustments to make as single handling is a constant job!

Give him a break! teaching your child manners in the mean time could keep you busy.

To Charlie,
If you have been following Zac's position and weather, you will note that he has been under overcast skies, light wind, rain and 4ft seas.
This tells me that he has limited power (as Marianne indicated on his initial day out of Majuro).
His concentration needs to be focused on navigating and avoiding hazards.
I am sure that we all are more concerned for his safety and will patiently await for him to have a chance to write in his blog.
This particularly leg is very challenging and he needs to devote his full attention to it.
As for his time in Majuro, he was in dire need of rest, a shower and just plain good socializing.
Give it a rest. Put yourself in his shoes and don't be so self-centered.
Apparently you have no idea on what it is like to sail.
Maybe you need to find another blog.

I agree with Daveh. Perhaps Zac shouldn’t have written so frequently during the first legs of his trip, and raised our expectations to the point where we feel we need to hear from him every day that he is on water or land! After all, this is the trip of a lifetime, and he shouldn’t feel obligated to run back to his hotel and write in his blog. He should be living life to the fullest and experiencing different customs and people, which it appears, he is. He also needs to catch up on sleep! And, there’s the work he has to do to get the boat ready for the next leg. I can only imagine that after several days with wonderful people, good food and normal sleep, he probably has some emotional and physical issues to deal with, and it probably isn’t easy to leave that all behind, knowing you’re facing the toughest 3 weeks of your life! Zac is very important to us all, but our support for him shouldn’t be dependent on how often he writes in his blog. Let’s take what we can get and not pressure him to feel like he must communicate more often than he’s ready. We know he’s OK, because Marianne would tell us if he weren’t.

H.E.Y. Zac YOU are the "MAN"

My young and courageous friend...
so wonderful to feel the rising of the swells and you settle in to the "What's making YOU a MAN journey"
Faithful "INTREPID", some 116 days after you "Christened" her with her new name...is resolute, fearless, dauntless, brave,
courageous and bold... feel safe and protected as the two of you become one
and so "You", too my friend..are taking on each and everyone of her qualities, as you guide her...
trust her Zac, trust her, be forward thinking and talk to her...be kind to her...knowingly kind

"sure was sweet"... "wear" the warm memories well... thats what thousands of miles of insulating ocean has done for them... you can only grin and smile as you think of what Our LORD is doing in you...LOL.. (philippians1:6)
for the Zac PAC as each of us feels the difference in our temperatures changing... for some summer to fall and others in the down under winter to spring and you begin to catch just a small understanding of what this challenge "circumnavigation" is
Zac coming on towards the equator, thanks marianne for the posting coordinates... excellent aussie inteview...and Laurence you must be so so proud.. we all just love you guys so much..."team Sunderland", what a 'GREAT' family
Zac Pac continues to grow and mature in size and understanding and of course in prayers and concerns
Zac the moon is coming up on full, enjoy the beauty and feel the difference in the journey, the swells ,winds, temperatures,sky... read the sky... and know you are never alone , we always with you in prayer and thought
and of course a homework assignment John 10:27-30, make it yours by memorizing it...
