Update from Zac 1

Intrepid at the yard

Hey Everyone,
Zac here, finally. So here are the events from the entrance of Darwin till now. I would have my log of the trip but my computers were down and I'm too spaced out and tired to copy 20 pages of my messy handwriting. So I saw the first lights of Darwin when I was about 10 miles off the harbor and I was running with the tide so it took me about an hour to reach them. By this time it was about 2:30 - 3:00ish so I followed the well-marked channel in for another hour. After making my way through quite a few reefs and sand bars I was finally in the anchorage, found a good depth (something that is very importent with 30 foot tides), dropped the hook and set it. It held great and by the time I had put everything away it was 4:30am. I was told that Customs was coming first thing in the morning so I set the alarm for seven so I could get up and be ready for them. The next morning it was hard to get up after only 2 1/2 hrs of sleep and even less the night before that. So I get up and fold the sail and get all the lines sorted, made some brekkie and waited for Customs. At around 10:30 they showed up and went through my whole boat. We did a bunch of paperwork but every thing went as good as possible and they were off the boat by 11:30. Then my dad called me on the VHF radio and told me that the press was waiting at the fuel dock. I up anchored and headed in to the fuel dock. When I got in I was greeted by my dad who I hadn't seen for over a month and half, a dozen cameras and mikes in my face. After we fueled and I did a little press conference we met up with Jen and were off to a restraunt for some good food. Then it was back down to the boat which was still at the fuel dock. I brought her around to the yard about 8 miles away but I had the tide against me so I was only making a little over 1 knot! It seemed to take forever but I finally got the boat around the point and ran with the tide till I got in. We got to the yard and I had a bit of a time getting the boat where the slings were because of the stiff tide. I finally got it in and we got lifted out right away. They power-washed the waterline to clean her up and then it was off to the yacht club for dinner, then to the hotel where I slept like a dead man till 5:30am when I had to get up and do an Ozzy morning show.
So jumping ahead, I'm in the hotel now and it's 10pm and I'm falling a sleep typing so it will be better if I fill you in on the rest tomorrow.
Cheers,
Zac

Hey bud! Good to "hear" "directly" from you again!
Look forward to more updates. I was thinking that you could use your computer but just not sail mail - so I thought your journals would already be typed - but! I can see how that might take you a bit to transcribe. We'll try to be patient!

However, I have tried that while trying to get into a sling lift, cRazY dude... Good job man...

Hi Zac!
great videos and photos (the photos come out a little larger if you are on facebook... so everyone needs to sign up for FB and add Zac!)

in the latest article about you (yachtingmonthly) it also mentioned a boy Michael Perham who is setting out from England in Nov and heading around the southern oceans and hoping to return back home again by April '09! Does this affect your journey in any way?

the Cape of Good Hope will be a busy place what with the Vendee Globe starting Nov 9th as well! you'll be the only one going the other way!

enjoy your rest & refuel

Hello Zac & Everyone,

Great to finally hear from you. I'm sure you're very happy to finally be on land. I saw the TV interview and it was great that they combined you and Dad plus Mom all together in the same shot.

You did not wait long to get Intrepid out of the water. Hopefully all the repairs go well. I know you don't have much time so fix her up, have a little fun, eat like a pig, and enjoy your time on land.

Did customs take all your canned food? Let us know how it all went. I know that you're quite tired now.

Congratulations on finally arriving!!!!! Knowing how hard it was on us, we can hardly imagine how long and tedious a trip it was for you. So good to hear from you again and looking forward to lots more updates. Relax, enjoy your Dad's company and hopefully, get to see some of the area. Of course, get Intrepid all in good shape too.
God Bless you and your wonderful family- big hugs to Mom too. We're hoping for a blog from her also now that you are back connected.

Hi Zac Down Under!

You are having an adventure! Congratulations and on making it to Darwin. I saw the video of Boris the red footed booby on your tiller. Pretty funny bird. Too bad there was no video of you trying to get it off your boat :-)

Have a great time in Darwin....

Congratulations on another successful leg under your belt!

I hope your repairs / maintenence on Intrepid go smoothly and timely.

Enjoy your time in Darwin and your special time with dad.

Hey Zac is BACK!,

So great to see your words again on your blog. We have all been waiting for what seems like ages to hear from you. Thanks for blogging, even though you were wiped out tired.

The picture of your boat out of the water is incredible. What a beautiful shot. I wish I was in Darwin. It looks beautiful. The news video was great too. I think as you have gotten closer to the ancestral roots, you have picked up an accent!

Really though Zac, we would love to hear to story about what happened between PNG and the Torres Strait. I can't imagine how awesome this story is going to be when you tell it.

You look great. I do think you need to try a pony tail by now. I think your hair is long enough now!

Get some rest, eat lots of food, sign lots of autographs, have some fun and bonding time with your dad in the homeland!

Best,
Peter

Hiya Zac!!!

GREAT hearing from you, and thanks as I know you must be exhausted!!

Sounds like you had a good time of it so far, lets just pray that all your repairs go well, AND are minor ones at that!

The TV interview was a nice treat, "y'all" looked great! It has been such a pleasure following along with you on your great adventure! You come up in converstaion on a daily basis as my co-workers ask me " how's your boy doing" or "where is Zac now?"

We had a wind storm Sunday and had no power Monday morning....I wasn't able to have my morning coffee "with Zac"....it was NOT a good start to the day!!! LOL!! I might have to actually get a life when you've completed your journey.......as Scarlet would say: "I'll think about that tomorrow"

Best wishes with your repairs. Enjoy your dad, eat some great food, rest, recharge, and know that you are offered up in prayer by many, many people who are in such awe of your talents, bravery, and maturity.

Glad you made it to down under Zac! It's too bad you couldn't spend a bit more time but you definitely don't want to be there for the cyclones. My friend in Australia says they spin backwards in the Southern hemisphere (well, backwards from our hurricanes). I hope you get to see some kangaroos and maybe a few of those world's deadliest animals they seem to have an abundance there. Two questions for you and maybe they've been answered already but here goes. First question: Have you figured out exactly where the half way point is going to be? It would be interesting to see how far you have to go to get there and how long it should take.
The second question: Have you decided what you are going to do with Intrepid once you get home? I think I'd get her remodeled inside since you had to partially gut her and make her a beautiful second home!
Just curious. Have a great time in Darwin and get everything needed done. I hear that going around the cape can be quite dangerous so you want your girl to be in absolutely the best shape. Replace anything that might look a tad worn even if it doesn't really need it. Safety first!

finally made it innnnnnnnto Darwin.
You look like you caught up on sleep and my guess, you and your father are drinking Red Bulls and working on the boat right about now.

How is the Sponsorship going? Has anyone contacted you, like Nike or Spam? I hope the Aussies treat you okay, in spite of the Dicks record.

Don't forget Thursday night, Mindl
Market, just south and a little east of the Marina. Make sure you arrive there Hungry, the food aroma will entice you regardless.

I hope you dine well in Darwin, lots of veggies and fruit and huge steaks and the boat repairs go according to schedule. On to South Africa!

Hi Zac,
It's Saturday 1AM here in California and I just wanted to give you a "HIGH FIVE" and tell you, "JOB WELL DONE" before I go to bed! I am so proud of you, on completing another leg of your trip. You looked terrific on your video with your Dad when you arrived in Darwin. So cute with your bandana. I have to admit I am not a big fan of long hair on young men, but the look is definitely you!! Thanks for taking the time to write, I know how busy you must be getting "her majesty" some tender loving care!! The picture of Intrepid on the boat hoist reminded me a little bit of "Free Willy" (Keiko) when they hoisted him from captivity to freedom!! Intrepid is awesome! You take good care of her and she will take good care of you!

I too, am looking forward to hearing about your trip across the Torres Strait when you get some time. This is an adventure that I don't want to miss one minute of!

Until tomorrow, Zac!! I will be checking on your progress, and saying my prayers as usual tonight, or should I say this morning, and ask for the lord to keep you safe.

Zac,
Man it's good to read words from your hands....not that Mum and Dad aren't appreciated, because they are, but to finally know your safe, and in the arms of family again, if only for a short while.

Which brings me to this reality check. While all the wishes, for rest and food are valid and needed. There is work to do.

One thing that has continually impressed me and the world has been the maturity you have. We all know that Intrepid is your lifeline, and right now it needs the focus of attention which it's captain provides. Relying on those who are the experts is great, yet you hold the ultimate responsibility to be sure she is ready for the next leg.

So if I may, get your much needed rest, sustain yourself with the comforts of the hard, but focus on your boat and what got you this far just as much.

The world holds you in their hands and prayers. All of us want to support, and continue following you on this your greatest quest.
We wait to hear from your team, and from you.

Happy times in OZ!

Zac, it's great to hear from you and other commenters have said it so well that I won't belabor the point.

I'm having a problem deciding just who you are now. Sometimes, you're me and I'm having this tremendous adventure. Sometimes, you're my own son out there. Other times, I'm crew wondering what I can do to make this continue as well as it seems to have gone. Pity I can't cook either!

Don't worry about all the notes to be transcribed. We're confident that it will be there in the book and will not be redundant from the blogs.

UNBELIEVABLE these few nits (anonymously) complaining about Zac’s hair… Hey, the hair comes along with the territory, for three reasons:

#1 – When you’re at sea for a month, there isn’t exactly a stylist floating on a buoy for you to stop in a see

#2 – When Zac sails into port, after a month at sea, steps off the boat with a bunch of reporters there, it’s not like he had time to go to the Hollywood makeup room and be prepped

#3 – It’s Zac, it’s part of what Zac is right now, if you want all the other part of Zac, then you should embrace that part too, OR at least stop complaining about it…

Hear, hear, DaveH! I know there is a running joke on barbers and such, but, really... Zac's hair, Zac's choice. Personally I like it; it fits him. But I really don't care. His hair has nothing to do with his quest or his accomplishments. And, aside from the running jokes, I suspect Zac has many more important things to think about.

Besides, way back in the Pre-Cambrian when I was Zac's age, his hair length would be considered medium-ish. :) Why, it's barely shoulder length...

Cheers all!

I know you are working hard on Intrepid and getting her ready for the next leg. You both have been through a lot and deserve some pampering.

Love your hair. You are an individual and will express yourself as necessary, hair and all.

Don't change for others, just change for yourself.

I hope you are also finding time to download some music on your new mp3.

We are all anxiously awaiting to read of your continuing adventure.

@daveh: Thanks for coming to the defense on the hair topic. You stated it well ... and Zac's hair is Zac's hair. He makes the call.

Zac was put here to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world, not to fit someone's idea of what a young circumnavigator should look like ... there is no precedent.

Let's support Zac on his adventure, not try for a 'makeover'. If everyone got in their bit on a transformation, what would he look like? Is a giraffe really a mouse designed by a committee?

If he likes the way he looks, that's the way he should look. My only past comment has been that Zac should be allowed to enjoy his hair while he has it.

Support the man as he is, or butt out. His purpose is not to please us with his appearance, but to inspire us to follow our dreams and make them happen. That's more than enough.

Hello Zac,
I have been off-line for the past few weeks due to dodging a few large squalls down here in south Louisiana. Hurricanes Gustav and Ike have forced numerous school closings due to massive evacuations. We just returned to school this week and one of the first things my students wanted to know was, “Did Zac ever make it to Darwin?’ We are all glad to see that you did. We follow your progress using Google Earth so make sure you continue posting those coordinates.
Good luck on the next leg of your journey from the students of St. Gregory Barbarigo School, Houma, Louisiana.

Apparently I have offended another blogger that I commented on today… Re: “Zac, get a haircut”…

My apologies, I don’t want to offend anyone, ever, especially here…

I do feel the “get a haircut” thing is derogatory towards Zac, and I have a hard time that someone can’t understand that #1 he’s 16, #2, it’s the style for many kids today (remember surfer’s of the 60’s????)…

I once had hair like Zac, today, I’m just glad I have hair! [laughing]

My apologies if I offended anyone with my reply…

Honestly, who cares about the hair?
This guy is doing what no other 16yr old ever has and few have ever dared ...and he's doing it with class and grace and passion for the next leg!
How many of us would still be passionate after all the battering he has taken? Not to mention the lack of any decent meal for weeks.
He's 16 and thanks to the video we know toast is a challenge...yes, I know that was for fun but I am sure it is not far from the mark.
Thank goodness for his hairstyle,
that's the only way I know he is 16! Personally, I dig the bandana, it suits him. He's grown up enough lately...time for sailing, bandanas and Ipods for this next leg. Enjoy every moment Zacers, smell it, taste it, touch it, savor every second, count the stars and don't look back...keep that goal in mind...getting back to MDR! There's no room on Intrepid for Complacency now.
Enjoy Darwin...get that boat in the best shape you possibly can.
Have you a water maker yet?

Zac and ZacPac:

I've been walking around the house humming the words to the musical "Hair." "Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair..."
Being a child of the 60's I had to laugh - I felt the way Willy in Milford did. Goodness, his hair's only to his shoulders! What is the big deal?

But seriously, Daveh, I loved your post. He is 16 and that is the look now. I'm sorry someone found that offensive. Zac should do whatever it is HE wants to do. He should not change for others!

Right now his focus is on fixing up Intrepid and gearing up for the next amazing leg. And we are here to support that endeavor and this amazing inspirational young man.

Zac, our prayers continue.... always!

Thanks, everyone, for some interesting posts while Zac and Laurence are hard at work!

Blessings to all,

I readily admit, I grow concerned not hearing updates on what’s happening w/our Capt. Zac. However, having been in communication w/Team Sunderland & their continued efforts to ensure things are w*rking, behind the scenes, I rarely post the above comments. So that being said, I have some info I’d like to share.

As many of us old-timer ZacPac’ers know, the current cost of Capt. Zac’s circumnavigation hasn’t been cheap. Additional expenses have been incurred (please see previous blog entries by Capt. Zac, Lady Marianne & the Most Honorable Davidh) & with all the donations/gifts sent, while adding up, aren’t quite covering Capt. Zac’s expenses. I URGE EVERYONE to please, click the donate link/button & contribute a wee bit more. Please, even $15 helps.

Now that the plug to donate is done…, I’ve been in further contact w/a couple more air carriers. No, the news isn’t pretty.  In order to protect Team Sunderland’s privacy (it’s not safe to post Lord Laurence’s frequent flyer info online), to compensate for this, Delta Airlines, American Airlines & United Airlines already have in place ways to “gift” miles to someone. You simply need to follow the prompts/fill out the required fields. While this is not the optimal way to assist (again, please click the DONATE button), it is a way for those of us who are able to “gift” miles, whom are able do to so, to someone else. Please see the links below:

http://www.delta.com/skymiles/buy_transfer/index.jsp

http://www.aa.com/aa/i18nForward.do?p=/AAdvantage/programDetails/purchasingMiles/purchasingMiles.jsp

(for a shorter URL:)
http://tinyurl.com/2o8kyy

http://www.ualmiles.com/?navSource=Dropdown07&linkTitle=buyortransfermiles

(for a shorter URL:)
http://tinyurl.com/4oomla

Again, I reiterate, the best way to help out is to click on the DONATE icon/button, so Team Sunderland may choose the best/least costly way to stay in contact and support our Capt. Zac.

Thx for reading this &, as always, for the ever continuous prayers/positive thoughts/lit candles for our Capt. Zac & his Team Sunderland.

HUGS!!!

Hello Daveh,

It was nice of you to apologize if the Anonymous person took offense.

#1 When I read your post I thought you were very kind and didn't sound threatening in any way.

#2 Some people (anonymous) hide behind that computer and post some comments that could possibly hurt Zac or possibly make him change his mind. Everyone can express there opinion but it shouldn't be written if it could possibly hurt someone.

#3 Daveh you did the right thing by expressing your opinion and I totally agree with it. If Zac wants to go into a Barber Shop and cut his hair well good for him. If Zac would like to take a picture in front of every Barber Shop he passes by and never walk inside for a hair cut that's also fine.

I'll end this post with a quote from Daveh last entry. I feel the same way Daveh does and that's why I included it. "My apologies, I don’t want to offend anyone, ever, especially here"…

Hopefully your having a fun time Zac, with or without a hair cut.

Enjoy Your Time on Land,

Hey Zac,

I have to do this on the sly. Since I've been checking the blog for any new posts (maybe every few hours :-), my husband says I spend more time with Zac than with him. I thought that was funny stuff!

The hair is fine. Maybe next time I'll put a picture of my son and his hair here. It is the style now and the girls love it!

You're right on Tomi, and I did donate a bit just before Zac reached Darwin; yet perhaps next month a bit more wouldn't hurt a thing, especially when they take his food stock in some ports.

I've been reading 'Sailing alone around the world' by Joshua Slocum. I've finished 'Dove' and plan to read the other two by Graham after Sailing alone.

Hang in there(and welcome) Shekka24 (Jess); Zac does post each day he is able when sailing. At port, not so much, as there is just so much to do and soak up while there. I for one, will probably never get out of the country, and I wish Zac could enjoy more of the people and cultures he is in or passing by; yet he is on a mission. Perhaps later in life he can revisit the land down under and other places.

I'm going to watch a couple DVD's I got from the library on Australia and the Islands while waiting for words from Zak or the Sunderland team.

I hope all is going smoothly for you in Oz, Zak. I hope you've found your land legs and are getting yourself rested and the Intredpid 'groomed' for the next leg. Take care of you and yours.

Namaste

It’s pretty predictable that when we haven’t heard from Zac or his family for a while, the Blog tends to reach a lower level of meaningful discussion and higher level of boredom, resulting in discussions about Zac’s hair.

I agree with Daveh, to let Zac do what Zac is going to do with his hair, and I especially agree with Tomi. Let’s hit that donate button and help with the repairs on the boat, and the expensive electronics that were malfunctioning in the Torres Straits, so we can get him on his way safely.

I think all the packages (not sure what they all contain), letters and post cards the Zac Pac sends are great as he arrives in port, but he can read his Blog everyday and see the support for him around the world. What Zac and his family need now is more funding to pay for the expensive repairs. The boat is extremely well stocked with Clif Bars, Lara Bars, dried food, PB&J, canned meats, powder supplements, vitamins, etc. Laurence was quoted in Oxnard as saying that Marianne loaded the boat with enough food to keep him alive for 2 ½ years. There is a challenge keeping the weight of Intrepid at a level that is optimum for sailing. The heavier the boat, the slower it goes.

So next time you think of sending a package to Zac, hit that Donate button instead and give what you can! Thanks again for your suggestion, Tomi.

This blog is for Zac, to lift him up in prayer and cheer him on. We "Zac Packers" can get mighty protective of "our boy"!!

Hope all your repairs are going well, you're rested and ready to take on the next leg of your awesome adventure!

God speed young man, you'll probably never know just how proud of you we are. Many of us here have followed along from day one and I guess you can say we've adopted you!!!

Zac,

Whatever on the hair, it is your hair by the way. I will not waste a post on such trivial matters when more pressing concerns are weighing heavy on me. Why hasn't anyone complained about the color of Zac's yacht? Come on! White with a few black letters? I personally believe it should be re-painted with a color that really pops when you see it in the water. While the boat is out of the water this is the perfect time to repaint. And while we are at it, can't we do something about the plain white sail?
I hope your repairs are going well and that the resting is easy!

Just wanted to share some thoughts… On these lay-overs it’s near 7X24 non stop work, trips to parts places, machine shops (seems like you always need custom something because you can’t get the real part) and provisioning, going over things 2-3-4 and maybe even 5 times…

I’m sure there’s some engine, electrical, mechanical, electronics activity…

Probably meeting with some people about the next 3 legs, replacing lines, checking standing rigging, etc…

We tend to think that when Zac’s at sea and we don’t hear from him it’s bad and when he’s portside and we don’t hear from him it’s sac (laughing)…

The amount of work that has to be done on these short stop would amaze most, it’s crazy and always a race against the clock to play the tides, current and future weather windows…

New boat color sure... but for the sail to be colorful, he needs a great big sponsor to colorize that sail with whatever logo and colors they see fit. I can imagine a great big NIKE swoosh or an Apple or how about a great big Wheaties box. Anyone have any connections?

Rich, I loved your idea about us all going on a hair strike...I'd love to but mine is all falling out right now!

Steveb - I think you're onto something! How about a neon orangeand green striped boat and a glow in the dark yellow for the sails....no external lighting needed! And all the other ships would definitelty see him!

Daveh - thank you again for all your wonderful explanations and insights!

And to all ZacPackers - thanks for the reparte and entertainment during Zac's layover!

I hit the DONATE button, I hope it helps a bit. Marianne, I hope all is well on the home front. I bet its good to talk using Skype while he's in port. Prayers for the family that lost their dad on the metrolink crash. I know lots of the funerals were this last weekend.

Laurence and Zac - good luck with speedy repairs, getting some good food and good zzzz's. If Zac hasn't read the second Robin Lee Graham book "Home is the Sailor" I highly recommend it, I just finished it.

Zac, remember to take a moment each day to savor its essence and commit a special moment to memory. When you're home again you can close your eyes and relive each one. Take care, lots of good thoughts and prayers coming your way daily!
