Drawing Winner

Hi Everyone!

I forgot to mention the winner of last week's drawing for a signed poster and head shot. The winner is Doyle Jacoby. We will continue this drawing each week until the calendars are all sold. Your name will be entered once for every calendar purchased this week from Zac's Store (link on the right) to win a signed poster and head shot. The calendars are slightly over-sized with a lot of space to write on each day and great, large photos taken by several different photographers: Jen Edney, Mike Smith and Lisa Gizara.

This is the link to Marta Szilajtis' web site (thanks to Josh Frey):

Thanks again for all the kind holiday wishes. We have had a very loud, busy and merry Christmas indeed!

If there's ever time, Zac, could you describe local food items that may be new to you?

Have a TOOTIN' New Year celebration, but with an ounce of caution.

That's great that you got to meet up with Marta and swap stories.

I got to thinking the other day when I read your entry on Dec. 20, that the record seems to be less important now. The trip in itself seems to have taken on a whole life of it's own, so much so that whether you get the record or hold the record doesn't seem to matter much anymore. This is an experience that has and will shape you for the rest of your life, and what you have and will learn and take from it is worth a lot more than the record.

Rock on Zac!

Could someone update us on where Zac stands on the record? After reading Scot's comment, I went back to the website and read the faq on the record, then I chased down Mike Pelham's website (http://www.totallymoney.com/sailmike/?cat=4) and found he seems to be having problems of his own.

As Scot says, you've gained far more from this endeavor already than any record would provide. But still, a record would be nice, no? A little recognition for all those sleepless nights, hard work, and going without Mom's cooking?

Record or not, you have my unfailing admiration and respect.

Hello All,

Thanks for giving us this weeks winner.

I loved the attachment of Marta voyage around the world. Since her ancestors are Polish and Lithuanian this was especially pleasing for me. My girlfriend Jolanta who was helping at the LA Gathering is also from Lithuania. So many people asked here "Where is that accent from?". I just forwarded Jolanta the link a few minutes ago. Thanks for providing us with that link.

@ Zac, I hope you have a Great New Year's and enjoy this time on land.

@ The Zac Pac, I hope everyone has a Great New Years.

Sincerely,

Jim,

Someone else may have already answered this by the time this gets posted, but as far as I know, the record is held by a guy who left at 17 and returned at 18. If Zac gets back before his 18th birthday (November), which he should easily, then he has the record. Depending on when Mike gets back and how old he is will determine if Zac gets the record or how long he holds it. Mike is a little bit younger I think.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

Hi Zac,

it seems that you can leave Durban in +/-100hours...then you will have Wind and Waves in your favour to fly past East London all the "way" to Cape Town....

Don't know how you do it Mom, but thank you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the Sunderlands. I will continue my letter writing campaign to get Zac his much deserved visit to the white house when he returns. Of course he has to make it home safely first.

I know this blog is about Zac and his big adventure, but it would be fun to see the whole CA-based Sunderland family. The picture of
Baby Ben drawing a name from the cap was super cute.

Hello, 2009. This will be another big one for Zac. Sweet Homecoming! ....b.b.b. but what will we Zac packer do? Ah well, sharing this adventure will take a loooong time to wear off. We'll just shut up and wait for the book and see what Zac has been holding out on us. Heh!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone of you!!

in order to be considerd to have circumnavigated the globe. one has to pass by all 5 capes and venture in to the northern hemispeher at least once. i have notcied that zac will not be doing this. it also states that you are not allowed to use either canal for passage. i was looking at zacs route and he is not passing by the 5 capes and he is using the panama canal. this will ruin his chances of becoming the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe. i have also noticed that zac has received assistance with repairs and also has been towed part of the way. does that also ruin his chances. thanks

the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe was jesse martin. he is from austrailia . he completed his voyage when he was 17 years old. he also did it un assisted and non stop. in order to be considered for the record you must pass by all 5 capes and venture into the northern hemisphere at least once. you can not use the canals and you must not receive any help like a tow or help with repairs.

although zac can never hold the record because he has received help and tow. what he has done is amazing. sure he wont be passing by all the capes but he has pchoosen to be as safe as possible. that shows common sense. Zac has choosen to stay away from cape horn because of the bad seas and winds. he will be taking the panama canal. but still it has been an amazing voyage.
