Benefit Screening of Morning Light

Hello All!
I am expecting to hear from Zac this afternoon sometime. He has been busy exploring St Helena and pulling off his starter motor thus lending piratical application to the true definition of cruising - going to exotic places to fix your boat! Zac will also be making his debut as a nature photographer so check back later today for sure!

With the lull in blogs I thought this would be an excellent time to let any of you locals in on a fantastic happening in our area. This event is being put on by the Westlake Nautical Foundation who have been a fantastic support to Zac.

Thursday, March 26, the Westlake Nautical Foundation is hosting a special fundraising event to benefit its Junior Sailing Program: Walt Disney Picture's feature-length sailing documentary Morning Light will be shown at a private screening, which will likely be the last opportunity to see the film on a large theater screen.

As a special added attraction, Roy P. Disney, who is a past winner of the Trans Pacific Yacht race, will present a live personal introduction. Disney served as the sailing coach on the production. His father, Roy E. Disney, is the film's producer and nephew of Walt Disney. The film follows the true-life exploits of a group of young non sailors who are provided a world class racing yacht and taught to sail before competing in one of the world's toughest open ocean races: a 2,500 mile trans-Pacific course from Newport Beach, California to Honolulu, Hawaii.

A prescreening reception will be held at the Westlake Yacht Club at 6:00pm for those with advance purchased tickets. The club is located at 32123 West Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village.

The film will be shown at the Westlake Twin Theater, 4711 Lakeview Drive, Westlake Village, at 7:30pm. Advanced tickets are a $20 donation to Westlake Nautical Foundation. Tickets purchased at the theater are a $25 donation. All ticket holders attending the showing will be eligible for prize drawings.

Seating is limited, purchasing tickets as soon as possible is recommended by the co-hosts, Sharon and Michael Broggie. Suzie Bornhauser is the contact for ticket information and purchase: suziehost@msn.com, 805-778-1093.

The Westlake Nautical Foundation provides sailing scholarships and other benefits for children in the community. It is also sponsoring 17-year-old Zac Sunderland of Thousand Oaks, who is currently attempting to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The folks at the Westlake Yacht Club have also been a tremendous support to our entire family. Come enjoy their club and this special showing of Morning Light!

Cheers,

I read on AOL about the "period of silence" that everyone had with Zac and his sat. phone. I'm glad he's OK. I got really concerned initially after the first paragraph. Glad all is well and that he is now exploring St Helena. What's there to do on that island???

I've been missing some of Zac's postings. Already 2009 is turning into a really difficult year. I hope things slow way, way down so I can stay in touch more.

Onward!

Scott

"...going to exotic places to fix your boat!" Now that's funny.

I saw the movie Morning Light, and it was really very good. It not only documents the race, but the movie shows the grueling training and lead up period before the race. As well as the difficult competition to "make the crew".

It's not often one has the opportunity to see a well made sailing movie, and I can't think of a better way to help a good cause; go see the movie, you'll love it.

Marianne, thank you for the info about the Westlake Nautical Foundation's event. What a great opportunity for those in the area.

To the nine year old blogger wondering where St. Helena is located. Try a google search and put in St. Helena, UK or look on a map in the South Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Angola in Africa.

This is my first post. I want to share the following story with you, not to cause worry but to be thankful for all the years of sailing and training you, your family and others have given to Zac to prepare him for his current endevor of being the youngest to solo sail around the globe. I became a follower of Zac's in early November after a friend sent me his link. At the time my cousin was sailing from the Canary Islands to Grenada. He was sailing with two others. Their trip took 35days not the planned 21.Apparently they hit the doldrums for two weeks. With light or no wind a sailboat doesn't move much unless under motor. Finally a ship made contact with them and relayed their location. All are well but had they planned on a set time to radio in their location, all involved on land would have slept better. Unfortunately they didn't have a SAT phone. Lesson learned: Plan ahead, be prepared, be responsible and be diligent in making contact and if possible have a SAT phone and computer.

Marianne and fellow bloggers, I shared this with you so that everyone can realize how one needs to prepared for all that the sea can offer up. Zac has had so many more years of sailing experiences than my cousin so I know Zac will return home safely. Your family, friends and other supporters have been so good to provide as the need is known. Good to hear he has "weather watchers" who can relay the info to him. So happy Zac is having such a fabulous experience and taking all of us along with him on his amazing journey.

Best to you, your family and especially, Zac.

Let's hope Zac hasn't fallen in love with nature photography and given up sailing now. Is he busy being enchanted with butterflys or getting all greasy overhauling the engine ;-)

Good the hear that all is well and the pictures are great.

Can some one share what this movie is about. Have heard nothing. That is what happens when you are out of the states.
