Canal Transit Update I
Hello All,
Spoke with the boys at Shelter Bay this morning. They are packing up Intrepid with food for the linehandlers and pilot, extra lines, tires ect.
Zac understood that they are to meet the pilot at 4:00pm Panama time but that they are likely not to be in the locks until 6:00pm. Right now the Gatun Locks web cam is pointed at the approach to the locks. You may be able to see them on the approach on the web cams but they probably won't be in the locks themselves until a few hours later.
Once in the canal Intrepid will be side-tied to a catamaran called Pura Vida. They expect to be anchored in Lake Gatun by 9:00pm Panama time/7:00pm PDT/10:00pmEDT.
Someone asked if the footage will be saved somehow. Yes, the Panama Canal Authority will save a hard copy of Zac's transit that will eventually be posted here on Zac's site.
Zac is planning on calling with any updates or newly understood time frames. The passage from Lake Gatun to the Miraflores Locks is about 30 miles long. Zac thought it would take until about 2:00pm Panama time tomorrow to get to the Miraflores Locks.
All for now. Will update as needed.

Hey they heard me! That other ship seems to be headed for the far lock so it won't block our view. First time a ship has ever done what I wanted it to do! Ha!
So when the water drops down we will hardly be able to see them correct?
Water level rising, increasingly confident Intrepid is along the port side of the cat.
it does look like a catermaran (sp) and another boat...or maybe I'd tired and have been looking at the screen too long!
Ship is clear, I can make out the cat hulls!
If thats a cat, its a big one!
You'd think that with a multi-billion $$$ budget they could afford a second hi-res webcam!
I think I have it wrong, they are going up. The black hull looks like a tug and its moving forward so will only be on the screen a few more minutes and Intrepid and the Cat will follow, Aren't they tied to a wall? not locked in the middle, lines would have to be hundred of feet long for that manuever.
@ Trevor, yes port side I agree
They hold keel boats in the centre of the lock. At least, all the ones I've seen go through Miraflores have been this last week I've been watching.
Diane
From reading an earlier account of a passage, locked centre on long lines is apparently preferable I believe Intrepid &nd the cat were alongside each other - combined beam just under 50' in a 100' wide channel?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2009/05/remarkable-achievements-at-17-one-sailor-and-three-climbers-.html
200 + posts!
Intrepid Hull clearly visible RIGHT NOW 20:01:31
Trevor - you can read the name on the hull? Impressive! :)
They're moving.....
Definitely, a Cat with Intrepid at its side.
WhooHoooo!
20:06 - Cat hull most definitely!
It's the shape of the hard dodger (sprayhood to me) that I'm using as a telltale
I've lost clarity but think intrepid has moved forward towards gates and cat. is centre channel behind - twin hulls visible
That sure looks like a catamaran now with Zac tied on the side closest to us?
Anyone?
Marianne
no I retract that - it's glare from the floodlight - intrepid and cat still side by side
Marianne - agreed!
DD (UK)
Can definitely see the cat. Lights too bright on it side though.
Just hopped closer to the gate.
You can zoom in on the .swf, right click on the picture and zoom in, or if your browser has zoom, increase it, you can see much better.
SAW HIM!!! How fun - thanks for sharing!!!
Agreed! Yeeehaww!
Marianne - Yes! I think that's your boy!
I have cam open in popup window, zoomed to 165% if that helps?
Wow, his hair has really grown!
Well - considering the rubbish web cam, the rubbish lighting, the fact that it's late there and a lot later here, the fact that they were in the far lock . . . . that was a load of fun!
See you all tomorow!
DD (UK)
I circled what I think was the cat on my blog: sebeclake.blogspot.com Is that right?
That's it Mike.
Mike - I'd definitley agree
DD (UK)
I just had a weird refresh and I can't see them now. Oh man! Is it over until tomorrow???
Well, there we are. Glad I was able to watch it... with all of you.
We should have much better views tomorrow at Miraflores. Hope Zac has a good night, although it may be a short one.

:-)
Likwise - is anybody else out of breath?
LOL
work in <4 hours!
nite nite!
233 posts in under 9 hours!
Marianne - is that a record? :)
What a day --- see y'all tomorrow!
that was great! Of course, my dh thinks I'm crazy. Been sitting here for over 2 hrs. It's "get your OWN dinner night" here!
@Papajock, Miraflores web cam is much better....should be a good show tomorrow although tonight's was pretty exciting!!

was very cool, but looking forward to high res in the daylight, hopefully tomorrow! your ok well-wisher
Seems like they disappeared! I still can't get my bearings on this camera angle. That was definitely them though. Where they went is a mystery to me! Very cool! I'll post any new info I receive in a new blog and we can meet on that blog's comments when it arrives.
Thank you all for being here. That was really fun!
Marianne
where r u capt?
they are below the lock, the two little engines will pull them across in bit
Darn..i missed it on my drive home:{
Laura
I think you can just see the top of the masts reaching the top of the lock.
Looks like they'll have a big ship right behind them.
I thought they were supposed to be going up? Yes, a world record amount of blog post for sure!
Marianne
Wow, wow and wow!
What a day for Zac, Team Sunderland and the Zac Pac.
Too Cool.

Wow - It is unfortunate Zac could not pass through now - the locks are empty and we would have had a clear view.
Caution - Before using the "sunnyfortuna.com" site you should check your Anti-virus software for alerts. This site is a known source for several Trojan Horse programs.
Woohooo!
I'm poster number 252...That's so cool! Busy day on the blog today.
I was talking to a patient today, and they just returned from a 20 day cruise and went through the canal, I told them I'd been following you since your departure and you were due to pass today and they knew exactly who I was talking about.........
Go Zac!! Enjoy the rest of your trip!
