ABC World News Update
Zac's piece was bumped due to a breaking story. It will still be on Nightline at 11:35pm tonight and will likely be on the World new at 6:30pm Thursday or Friday. Sorry for the trouble!

I've been reading Zac's blog from the very beginning and I'm anxious to "see" him sail home, as I'm sure his entire family is. I've TEVO'd the program tonight and will be watching it. What a wonderful year it's been! You are an amazing guy with a fantastically supportive family!
ABC'll catch up with you...never fear Zac is near! We'll be watching. The cool breezes? It's funny. You think you don't miss em' until you feel em'. They're refreshing, especially if not attached to too much wind & wave. My gosh, Zac. 590 miles between you & home. You're the Indy Jones of the seas. Keep the weather eye, remember, X marks the spot; MDR. You'll make your mark. Your ever humble attitude is something we will not forget...I will not forget. I'm sure everyone's thrilled to have their ?'s answered, too. You're an inspiration. Have a great nite. The sun's on her way down...again. Stay warm, safe.

No worries. I think Zac was most likely bumped as a result of the death of Karl Malden, a wonderful actor and husband. Can you believe that he and his wife were married for 70 years? Talk about doing "hard things." RIP Karl.
Thanks for the up date. we will stay up. Bill Minneapolis
Hi Zac!
I can't wait until u arrive In Cali!:)
That was awesome. Saw it on Nightline.
GOOD LUCK on this rest of your trip..Please write a book with pictures will buy one. brave young man. May GOD be with you.
Hey I saw it here in Canada. It was on at 9.45pm Mountain time. J.
I saw the report tonight on Nightline. Loved it. So well done. I've followed Zac's journey from the first, and it really was great to see this piece. I'm old enough to be his Granny, and wanted to get in there and cut or comb that hair. (feel that way about some of our grandsons too) I have and will continue to pray for his safety.
It's funny but the word verification that I'm going to have to type to get this message sent is "diaper". No reflection on you Zac. LOL
Capt. Zac,
I caught your interview on Nightline tonight...........great to see you've been getting national attention lately!
Stay safe!

11:35 PT? Will someone tape it and post it, just in case I don't get to see it.
Prayers to you Zac, and the Sunderland family.

I watched the segment tonight - and I think that what you are doing is amazing. I'm also 17 and it's just great to see someone my age do something so wondrous. I admire your sense of adventure, courage and bravery. You're an awesome guy and are accomplishing something great. I wish you the safest of journeys and great luck. God Bless!
I let all of my friends know that they should tune into the ABC nightly news tonight. Unfortunately, ABC thought that there was more important news to report. Just wait. . . Zac will be making more news than they ever knew soon! My sister in Alabama saw NightLine, and said that Zac's piece was about 10 minutes long and was fantastic! How great that it was finally aired! You just had to watch the first part about MJ. I have it on right now, and am waiting for Zac's segment. . . . can't wait! They just showed a preview before the commercial about Zac, so I'm sure it will air here in California! I'm so excited!

Stayed up to watch the ABC news and glad i did..great piece!
Needed the Zac fix to hold me over till the 14th lol
good night all...

Zac,
I've been watching your journey for a couple of months now & I have to be honest, I'm pretty jealous that you have the opportunity to do something this amazing! I grew up on boats, & have spent most of my life on power boats in the San Francisco Bay, but I couldn't imagine sailing around the world on a small sailboat. I just watched you on Nightline, & you have such a great attitude. You're getting close, & I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks it will be bitter sweet when you're trip is over! Well, it's been great watching and following your story, it's taught me a lot. :)

Back after a week in France and no computer....imagine life without Zac's blog!
I can hardly believe that Zac is so close to HOME.
Someone mentioned being blessed by being part of this adventure....well, I for one, have been blessed and encouraged and enriched by being part of this amazing journey.
Thank you Zac, thank you Marianne and thank you Laurence and all your family and also THANK YOU to all those who have 'been there'for Zac, in so many ways and in so many places.
Wish I could be at MDR but I know that y'all will do your best to help us.. who can't be there..enjoy his homecoming.
Stay safe Zac.
Home is just round the corner.

Zac, saw the piece on Nightline. Another terrific story about our terrific young adventurer. You're almost home!
Fair winds & good seas the rest of the way.

Saw Nightline! Awesome! To God be the Glory!!! Great things He has done and will do! Whaa-hoo!
I just noticed the Zac Cam Live link on the blog page.............nice idea to see the home coming of our young adventurer!
I hope someone will be posting his ETA as the time draws closer.

Missed the update that it would be on Nightline as well, so hopefully I'll catch it on World News tonight! I'm selfishly hoping Zac will arrive prior to 7/14, as that is the same date my family is leaving the country -- I was hoping to at least witness Zac's arrival in MDR live on web cam or TV! No matter, just keeping in my prayers that Zac continues to have fairly smooth sailing the rest of the way in and that he is greeted grandly whenever he arrives! Peace, Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
Yay! I got to see Zac's story last night on Nightline! It's so cool his adventure is going national on T.V. Hopefully that will get more people interested in his book and/or the documentary.
@Zac- Around only two weeks till you're home! Prayers to you for the remainder of your journey.
A homeschooled friend :)
It's great to see new people here since the "National Coverage" finally took place. If you're new "Welcome". I did not see it on television yesterday but hopefully will see it tonight.
Prayers go out to the wife and family of Karl Malden. Karl was a family man and married to the same woman for 70 years. It's always good to hear things like this today because it does not happen very often.
I hope everyone will see Zac tonight on the airing of World News Tonight. Marianne please keep us updated if you have any news. If someone recorded the program and could make it available to all us bloggers who never saw it that would be great too.
Sail Home Zac,

Is more of the same old story on Michael Jackson really more important than Zac Sunderland, com'on I don't think so.
I missed the ABC piece last night - will someone post? I am taking the 14th off from work so I can zoom over to MDR, unless the dates changes. Keep us updated! Jannette in Santa Monica
Missed the news last night. If you recorded it, will someone please post? I can't wait for Zac's return. Planning to take the day off from work to zoom over to MDR. Keep us posted, and God Bless Zac. You're a hero to our teens (and adults)! -Jannette, Santa Monica, CA
I stayed up to watch "Nightline" last night, I'm sure it was longer than anything they will put on abc news!
Safe journey home, Zac, not long now! I'm hoping we can come to MDR, but don't know yet if it's possible.
Rose
Zac,
I was so disappointed when your story got bumped last night on the early news. Hoping someone will post it here for those of us who don't stay up late enought for Nightline.
Is you ETA still between the 14th & 16th? Hoping to have enough of a heads up to co-ordinate work schedules and drive over from Tucson. I really want to be in MDR when you arrive home!
Stay Safe Zac.

Great piece on Nightline last night. It was hard to stay awake, I'll admit, but was well worth the wait.
I let out a big "woo hoo" at the end of the piece and of course, woke the rest of the house LOL!
I'm getting so excited about your pending arrival, I can hardly stand it. I'm wondering how many of our "locals" will be calling in sick on that day ;)
For those who cannot be here in person, we'll all be sure to make enough noise as if you were all here! No doubt about that!
The short piece that was on NIGHTLINE last evening was very well done. We are counting the days to zac's return.

I just went to the Nightline ABC web site and you can watch the full video there.
It was "way cool".

Seeing Zac and Laurence on Nightline was sure fun! Nice to see something other than death and murders.
Something I've been thinking about since viewing the segment: I think we all wish to do something extraordinary during our life. Funny thing is, I think we each do, and just don’t realize it. “Extraordinary” can come packaged as our actions during the small moments of each ordinary day, when we extend ourselves outside our comfort zone, reach outside the box. The little things that add up. Zac has shown us how to reach for a goal, and pursue it in bite-size chunks, going a day at a time. Thanks, Zac!
Zac, you are an inspiration, even to us old folks! We, too, have been following your blog throughout your journey and have shared in the ups and downs of your experience. You've braved the squalls and the pirates and the sleepless nights and you've rejoiced in the victories and engaged in once-in-a-lifetime experiences that we can only dream about. Thank you for bringing us close to it all! How I wish we could be there for your homecoming! We know it's not over yet, so we continue to pray for your safe return.

Awesome piece on ABC Zac. Thank both you and your Dad for taking the time to do the interview and share your video. The Pack loves it.

Hi fellow Zac packers, Here is an LA Times article that just came out today. It states that Zac probably wont hold the youngest round record for long. That may be true, but Zac will be the first one ever to have completed it under the age of 18. No one will ever be able to take that record from him.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2009/07/zac-sunderland-will-set-sailing-record-but-it-probably-wont-hold-for-long.html
Zac, Marianne, Laurence, you and your family have been a total inspiration for me and my family over the last year. I want to thank you so much for letting us share it with you everyday. We can't wait for the DVD and book. What an adventure all of you have had. It will be with you for the rest of your lives. You must be so proud.
Thank you so much,
...Malcolm
That's an odd piece from the LA Times, since yesterday there was very similar, much lengthier piece in a Canadian newspaper:

Great to see you on ABC! What fun to watch your adventure come to a succesful close.
Enjoyed seeing segments with Laurence working on Intrepid.

Hi Zac! Just watched your Nightline piece (again!). What an experience you have taken us all on!
Nice article from the Canadian paper as well. However, pleeeeese rethink the haircut stop in San Diego --- Bill Mann will be SO disappointed!!! :) Besides, I'm thinking we have all grown to love the beach bum look! You wear it well!
Did you find your jacket? If I could, I would love to send some of our untypical heat from SW Washington your way!!!
Hope you are having a great day, Zac!

A few thoughts:
While Zac's record might be broken by Mike Perham shortly after he sets it, I think Zac's crossing with grass roots financial backing and a boat of his own is more of an accomplishment that Mike's corporate sponsored endeavor and donated racing yacht.
It is sad that the Sunderland family has been so financially strained and I think for all of us who have been following Zac's story so faithfully, we should go to his main page and donate to the cause. It's the least we can do, and a thank you to Zac and his family for sharing this aventure wtih us.
Thanks to Anon who posted the Nightline link at 10:29 a.m.
I could not watch this without tears coming to my eyes. Is something wrong with me? LOL.
Zac, looking forward to sighting you from the wharf at MDR!!
Amen to ArticFamily5 - beautiful post!
I wish to send a shout out to Chrisian. Dude, the w*rk you've done promoting Capt Zac! & getting him all this national media attention is totally phenominal! Thx man!
@ Team Sunderland -
I truly hope homelife is getting back to normal (well, as normal as can be considering....). Hope you were able to get everything dried out by now.
For those of you who don't already know, Team Sunderland mails out the shirts you order from their home (w/the help of other family member - THX Grandma Creighton!)
Love the Zac Cam on Home Page - whoever rigged that up so very deserves a hearty pat on the back!
Still thinking of going out to see History. Even skipped the Family summer vaca so could hopefully afford it, funds are tight (heck, that's what credit cards are for right?). We'll see when things get closer.
Bear HUGS! y'all!

@ Kathleen in Palms... No, nothing wrong with you! Just wait until he pulls in to the marina! Oh goodness. I think the Kleenex makers may need to send us thank you notes. :)

Just saw the Nightline piece. It is fantastic! It is setting up the finale in a wonderful way. So, Zac...I guess continuing to stay focused is the hard part now. It must be tempting to say, "Well it is over and done!" But, not so. So, sail on to the end of this excellent adventure. Blessings, Steve
Hello Zac, just caught your adventure on ABC The World news. Good for you and I wish you well and many more journeys. Peace and Blessings.
QUESTION: Miles on the route vs. miles actually sailed: Any estimate on the difference between the miles on the course you have plotted out vs. the miles you actually sailed due to port visits, tacking / looking for wind, ducking a storm, etc?
I agree, Marie. We must have boxes of Kleenex handy for all!!
Saw you on Nightline last night. WOW! I find it interesting what other people are up to while we're living out little lives.
Good to see that you're doing something exciting! Can't beat doing something that you love.
Thanks for sharing.
My name is Clarence, I have been reading and watching Zac this last year and I am so spellbound by Zac and your wonderful stories. The videos are so amazing, is Zac making them himself? I would like to purchase some poster size pictures as gifts who would I contact? I can hardly wait for the documentary Zacs story is so inspiring, I am just in tears when I watch the videos of his journey. I hope Zacs return and future is as wonderful as the videos and pictures.
Blessings and good wishes
Clarence
Watched the ABC piece again this evening and again totally enjoyed it. Hope you all are buying the DVD, it should be amazing.
Thanks again Sunderlands.

Zac saw your piece on the evening news. Congratulations that is an awesome accomplishment. My 17 year old beautiful daughter says she wants to join you on your expedition to mt everest! Cheyenne added you to her my space or facebook ! Good luck and Godspeed. I was first woman on an oiler in the navy in Hawaii so breaking barriers are always necessary in life.

THANKS FOR THE LINK TO THE STORY ONLINE. WOW! WHAT A YEAR.

Zac, you're looking like 'Spicoli' on Nightline with the hair and the knit cap. A young Sean Penn look-a-like!
Any info on the new shirts?Laura
The first person under 18 to sail around the world alone. That's really amazing, and you're only 500 miles for completion. I can't wait to read your book, and watch the documentary.
Thank you for posting Zac's blog on the web! It's a valuable and modern tool for others who aim to circumnavigate. I saw his piece on t.v. last night and based on what I saw there are some questions I hope to have answered by reading to the end of his blog. Rest Well, Zac!

WOW!
Hope we get an early update from Zac or Mom.
Unreal, a Magnitude 6 Earthquake this morning [05:00:18 AM] in the Gulf of Mexico, exactly 200 miles East from Zac's last position:
If anything did result hopefully its contained within that Gulf.
Be very interesting if Zac "felt" anything, motion in the water or anything.
Man oh man, everything's been thrown Zac's way, Hurricanes, Earthquakes...what next...any Volcanoes en-route home or what?
Earthquake Data:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009iqba.php#details
Quake appears to be very weak to those on land much closer than Zac is. Hover the mouse over the colored in spots on the map for the intensity graph / levels as felt by people in those towns:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/dyfi/events/us/2009iqba/us/index.html
No one at sea in that region for sure except Zac :-) be pretty cool if he did sense something and reported it [there is a report it form on that site] and gave his coordinates as his address "sudden surge of gentle rollers 4-5 ft at the time observed" :-)
Hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend!!!

Hi Zac,
