Just Another Saturday on the Sea

I'm still fighting light winds on my way back to Marina del Rey. The weather has warmed up a bit. I guess I have passed out of the cold current I was in. It's been really nice to not be so cold. As I get closer and closer to home it is getting really exciting to be finishing up this year long adventure. It is going to be strange getting back but awesome to see my friends from Southern California.
Just a few more days.

Someone commented on the blog about the white nave lights on the container ship. Even though you can tell which end of the boat is the front and what general direction it is traveling, it is still hard to tell at what angle the ship is heading and how close it will actually come.

I will address some of the other comments tomorrow.

I've got to go adjust some sail for the night.

Cheers,
Zac

Not just another Saturday night on the Sea. It is the Last Saturday Night on the Sea. Next Saturday Night, you can do what a normal 17 year old does on Saturday night. A double/double, a movie, saying good night to your friends and sleeping in late Sunday morning.

To see the three letters in today's L. A. Times, cut and paste this into your browser bar.

A proclamation doesn't mean that Arnold will be there in Person. Still, a proclamation is a huge honor and well deserved.

Hey Zac, just saying 'hi', and well done so far. I have been following you and, probably just like your mom (I have a son your age), been willing you safe and had you in my thoughts. I haven't posted though and just wanted to say 'hi' and well done, as I know when you arrive things will go mad with all the press attention and you won't have time to read any mails or comments at all! I think what you have done is a spectacular achievement and please keep safe and have a fabulous return!

Zac, i just stumbled on to your site and i'm so blown away while also being jealous and proud of you, (i suppose you can be proud of someone you don't know). i'm 25 and have the spirit of adventure that you obviously have as well. i think that the lord creates each of us with certain desires and passions to live life to the fullest with his blessing. i encourage you to continue to follow your heart young friend and you will never be led astray! i live in Elizabethton Tennessee, so if you are ever in the dirty south let me know and we'll go get into some trouble. i'll be in costa rica doing some surfing and hiking the next 2 weeks, but hope your trip ends well. all the best.

Zac I've been praying for you during this trip, and am continuing to. Don't mean to put a burden on your shoulders, but hope you continue to be a good example for your siblings, your friends, and the young people following your adventures,

Hi, Zac,
I get goosebumps just reading your blogs. I live in Thousand Oaks also and feeling so proud of what you have accomplished. I know this is just the tip of the iceberg for you. I am sure there’s a lot more adventure to come for you. I wish I could be one of the ZacPac that will be waiting for you on Thursday in MDR. I will there in spirit cheering you on as you arrive.

God Bless and Welcome Home.

I could not help but post this. I hope Zac and his family know how many lives they have touched and the profound impact they have had. I received this email from one of the bloggers.

I don't remember where I heard about him but it was sometime in April 2008. I am a soon to be 81 year old grandmother. In April of last year my husband was in a nursing home and he had a picture of Intrepid on his wall. The highlight of his days was when I arrived in his room each morning with a print-out of Zac's daily blog. My husband died in August last year and most of my thoughts of him now are about how much he enjoyed hearing about Zac.

As with so many of us I have learned so much about sailing, geography etc. At my age it is helping me keep my mind in some sort of healthy condition. Although going through some of the hair raising adventures Zac has had isn't too good for the blood pressure !!!

I know I will never meet you or the rest of the Zac admirers. I live in Illinois. But I feel like I have made 100's of new friends.

Zac, this email alone makes what you went through the past year worth it.

There is no need to say G-d bless you as you are surely blessed, not only by the G-d of your faith, but by the G-d of all faiths, even mine.

Bill Mann - Thank you so much for sharing the e-mail you received with us. So beautiful and heartfelt.

I'm also so pleased to see the folks taking the floor who have been on the blog the last year, but did not comment frequently, or at all. It's so great to hear your voices.

@ Zac - Just a few more days. I'm torn between arriving early to wait for your arrival, or going up to the PV Bluffs above Rat Beach to see if I can spot you, and then racing you into to the Marina. I can't tell you how many times I've looked out into that bay and looked forward to the day that you sailed back into it. God bless you, Zac, forever and always.

Hey Zac,

How's it going? :-)

I was wondering if you still have those night googles. Are they any help in seeing 'ships in the night?'

Just noticing that Hawaii is only about 2,300 miles away now. That probably seems like a hop-skip-and a jump now!

But only 250 miles-give or take-to Marina Del Rey!

Keep sailing safely...

Hi Zac,
Thanks for the delay. I am coming back from rainy Germany on Wednesday and now at least I can watch you coming into MDR on the Web. Still don t know what to do after your arrival cause I will miss the blogs from the outstanding Sunderland family for breakfast. Enjoy the last few days on the water - I am sure your life will be different once back home.
All I can say - A job very well done.
Looks like Maersk is like Mercedes owners. They think they own the oceans/roads.
Greetings
Axel

Imagine that you owned a magic carpet that could take you anywhere in the world where there was 6 feet of water and you knew how to drive it. Imagine that you are now 17 years old and had just taken it for a spin around the globe to try it out. What would you do with it when you got back home? Hummm. How long before you climbed back on and hit the start button? Remember---you are 17 and this is all before the marriage, kids, house, career, or health issues.
Just something to think about these last few days of pure freedom Zac.

Good Luck with the rest of your trip home.
I have always wanted to do something adventerous and this would have been perfect, but I am a little too old now to take on too many dangerous adventures.
I hope your family, friends and you will have so much to share for the rest of your life?

Well Zac, the journey you put your self through is a task even the most expereinced sailor would probably not want to undertake. Your training and determination were a huge factor. I know it is not over yet, I`m sending you my congratulations young man and wishing you all the best in your future endeavours.
