A Note From Mom

Hi All,
Mom here for an update from the home front. Please forgive the lack of blog posts of late. It has been an interesting time for sure and we are all adjusting to A LOT of changes.

First off, last Thursday was an incredible day. We had been busy for months preparing for Zac's return and, like a kid on Christmas Eve, I could hardly wait nor believe that the day had finally arrived. We set off for the marina early and dropped by the Fisherman's Village to check on the set up. Richard Meyers was hanging signs, Christian Pinkston, Gary Calaroso and Michael Broggie were checking in the press and all the other millions of details surrounding an event like this. The place was abuzz with press crews and people showing up early to welcome Zac home.

We had to run over to the Del Rey Yacht Club who graciously offered the use of over 20 boats for our friends, family, sponsors etc to go out and see Zac coming in. We met there and found our ride and set off with our immediate family, Jen and her family, Lisa Gizara and fiance Eric, Pete and Al from the LA Times and the film crew. We actually had a surprise guest, Ron Kilgore from KNX 1070 radio who were just awesome that day broadcasting live throughout the day.

It was grey and overcast which was strange but at least the seas were calm. Yes, I get seasick! We set out and headed off in the direction we thought he would be coming from. After a few minutes we were able to make out a herd of boats in the distance. As we made our way I realized that the herd was surrounding Zac and following him in. That really got me chocked up to think that all of those people would take their boats out to see my son.

We made our way closer, being careful not to get in Zac's path or in anyone else's path. There were a few near misses that morning! We finally got close enough to see Intrepid and Zac at the tiller. It is hard to explain how it felt to actually see him again in person and not in a photograph as I had done for so many months. I waved and shouted and he saw us and smiled and waved. All of the kids were so excited! It was the successful completion of a journey for our whole family. I am only now just beginning to realize the effects of that on our lives.

We followed Zac for a good while watching as people shouted, blew air horns and even played trumpets. A boat load of his friends veared close and shouted and screamed. It was an incredible time and my most favorite of the day.

Wanting to be able to be there to meet Zac at the dock, we had to pull ourselves away and head back to Fisherman's Village. We got parked and waited while Zac slowly made his way in. It was pretty busy but Zac managed to weave his way in with the help of Boat US Towing that stood by to fend off if necessary.

Zac got in to his slip and after literally fighting off a news person who didn't care that he was interrupting our special moment, got to give my boy a big squeeze. Zac was ecstatic and beaming from ear to ear. Just awesome!

You have all heard the press conference (if you haven't - go to the media page and watch all of the great videos) so I won't go into detail there. It was a fabulous day.

Zac came out to dinner with us and then home and out with friends for a few hours. We were up again the following morning to do a few morning shows down in the marina.

As the days have worn on I have been able to hang out with Zac and enjoy just having him around. One of my favorite memories of Zac is when he gets out of bed in the morning and shuffles out of his room. I just stood there on his first morning home staring at him. Very silly perhaps but if you are a mom you will understand!

Zac has been pretty busy with interviews, renewing friendships and working on the details of his trip - bething Intrepid, unpacking, writing his book etc. I have noticed some changes in Zac. He is the same easy going, funny guy but all the more gracious and kind. He is not one to philosophise about things, at least not out loud, but the wheels are turning up there and he is full of life and passion and plans for his future. It has been an immeasurable pleasure to watch him.

We plan to continue the blog and are hoping to have a more regular routine soon. We are so thankful to so many people who have come together from day one to make this happen. We are thankful for your support and encouragement.

Laurence and I have spent the past few days in the studio at Praxis Universal working on the final edits of part one of Zac's documentary. This experience is so deep on so many levels. We are working hard to convey that to you all and from what we have seen, know that you will really love it.

Cheers,

Marianne
aka Zac's mom

PS A special note to the folks at Mike Perham and Jessica Watson's camps. The level of sportsmanship among the 3 of you young people is an inspiration all of its own. It has made this experience all the more meaningful to have like-minded people who really understand what this is like and how and why it is done.

Marianne....I applaude you.
Bringing up children is not easy for anyone....you make it seem easy but we mums and dads among us, know full well it is not.
You are right to watch your son as he shuffles out of his room....those are the little things that are missed when they are no longer with us.
His graciousness and kindness shine through...even at this distance!
Enjoy all the hanging out you can do with Zac....precious moments. One day, he will look back and remember those special moments too.
Hugs for you all.
Thanks for taking the time to let us know how things are with y'all.

Very happy for you Marianne and your family. This is very emotional....thanks for the report on how things are progressing with Zac. You are and should be very proud. He was wonderful on Jimmy Kimmel's show the other night and handled his jokes very well. I dont think he or the audience understood Zacs accomplishments. God bless you and your family.

I haven't blogged since you got back but saw Zac on Jimmy K....Did a fantastic job!
Marianne, I actually shed tears reading your commentary. It was so emotionally moving and so, so sweet. There's nobody like Mom and I know Zac knows that even more every single day!
And Zac, I loved your shirt whioh you wore that day. It was a witness to the Lord's "grace and rightousness" to a world suffering from separation from the Tri-un God!
Zac, you made us followers of your journey all the more proud of you and how you conducted yourself in your interviews and on Jimmy K. I can't wait to read your book and see the documentary!
And Lawrence, you're a unique Dad of all Dads. And you're a man of super faith in Jesus and your faith has strenghtened mine!
To all of you,
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face shine upon you!

Goosebumps and tears Marianne...What a tender, from the heart blog! We tivo'd Zac on Jimmy Kimmel and watched it 3 times last night. In a situation so worldly and with a few crass comments, Zac absolutely stood head and shoulders in character above it all. His sweet spirit brought real class and warmth to the show. As proud as I am of Zac, I cannot imagine how all the Sunderlands must feel! God bless you and your entire family.

What a wonderful post, Marianne. I still believe that there is a devotional book in you when you have the time to relax and put your year into your own words/thoughts. Maybe with a big family that time will not come for awhile.

Know that we all anxiously await the DvD set and that we will love every moment of work put into its production. Coming from a film family, I know how much work goes on.

Our prayers are with all of you. If I could have been the fly on the wall, I would have chosen your moment of standing and staring at your son on his first morning home. Wow, lots of tears here.

Love to you and your family,

Marianne,
May you continue to enjoy those rare moments with a sleepy young man to stare at. They all grow up so quickly. Yours has grown in so many awesome ways!

Chuckled last week when you told me you were encouraging the younger children to read about gardeners (rather than sailors); and too late for the older ones! From Garden Designer's (and formerly, occasional Tall Ship sailor's) perspective, both gardens and sea provide great ways for youth of all ages to encounter natural beauty.

If any local "Zac Packers" still reading along and bitten by "sailing bug", Los Angeles Maritime Institute is always looking for volunteers. Fun way to help at-risk youth -- website is lamitopsail.org. (Thanks for allowing me to post this here.)

Peace,

Hi Marianne,

"Zac shuffling out of his room." I think the one that did it for me as a mom was the photo early on in his voyage of him sleeping so peacefully. I can't remember where he was but he was in a room, lying barefooted on a bed - I think he had one arm over his face, just sleeping so peacefully like a teenager would.

That picture so reminded me of how blessed we are to have these gifts from God. And it also reminded me of my favorite memories of waking my sleepy teenagers up in the morning.

Thanks for rekindling that memory for me! It made my day! =)

Love you guys!

Hello to Team Sunderland!

Seems like I've heard this before, but
Mission Accomplished!! There are those who wish it contained so much truth.

After a week of computer down-time, I am somewhat less anguished after having caught up al the way to 'Here he comes!'

I'm having moments of euphoria that success is achieved. I'm having moments of dejection that 'our' advemture is over. Sure, there will be other ones, but there'll never be this one again.

Zac, you are the man! I mean that literally. You have, so far, met your success and the attention it has garnered with dignity and proper attitude. I feel like we now know one young man who will handle early success as a stepping stone to a higher calling instead of a justification for descent into some abyss of gloom and degradation.

Marianne's update here inspired me. I went into the room called the "Pit' where my sone was holed up. I said, "OK, get ready, it's been a little while, but it's hugging time!", then I told him that I loved him. As he gets taller and hairier, hugging has largely fallen by the wayside for the most part, but everyday, he is reminded that he is loved.

I look forward to the book and to the documentary -- and I look forward to seeing what is the next chapter.

To All;

Only a parent can truly understand what it's like to miss a child. I recall my oldest daughter going to Italy for 6 months in her last year of college for study abroad. My dark hair immediately began turning gray!

The phone calls and emails and pictures are all reassuring, but you just want them back home and safe. The day she came home, there was no holding back tears.

You guys have an incredible son and congratulations are due to you. As another writer said, raising kids isn't easy; anyone can have and raise children, but doing it right and raising them to be responsible adults is another story.

We're glad to have found Zac's blog and to have shared in his adventure and now look forward to the book and DVD!

Funny story.

Last year I bought a world map for my synagogue's youth leader so her group could follow Zac and plot his location around the globe. She, and the youth, were impressed by Zac's faith as well as his courage, youth, and sense of adventure.

Unforunately, none of them are sailing people. More like shopping and twittering people, so crossing an ocean at 4-6 mph wasn't fast enough for them and they quit following some time before Majuro.

Thinking back, they, missed all the best parts and dramatic prayer interventions of Zac's trip. When the DVD comes out, I'm sure we'll have a viewing party. Even if our teens couldn't stay interested for a year, surely they can pay attention for a few hours. :-P

Until then, your whole family is in my prayers daily. Now that Zac isn't alone on the sea, he gets to navigate the much more dangerous waters of Los Angeles celebrity. Fortunately, Marianne and Laurence seem to have prepared him as well for this as for his other adventure.

On a completely unrelated note, if any of the Zac Pac is going to the Orange County Super Fair this year, my band, KnightLyghter, will be playing there on August 2nd. I'd love to meet and chat with anyone of y'all there.

Mike Perham's Boat Got Slightly Damaged in the Gatun Lock

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I just got an update via cellphone from my son who is with Mike Perham aboard his sailboat the totallymoney.com. Apparently there was some kind of a minor mishap in the very last stage of the Gatun Lock of the Panama Canal. According to my son, currents in the lock pushed the sailboat up against a tug that was to their starboard side. Some side railing wires got caught up in the tires that were hanging from the side of the tug as bumpers, and there was some minor damage to the starboard side of the boat. Right now they are headed toward the Shelter Bay Marina on the old Fort Sherman installation. Mike was scheduled to depart Panama tomorrow morning at 6:00 am, but at this point I don't think they have determined whether or not repairs are required before he can set off. This just happened about five minutes ago, and Mike is discussing the requirements to file an accident or incident report with the Panama Canal pilot who is aboard his boat. I've heard lots of stories like this from guys who transit the Panama Canal in relatively small boats - it's practically common.

It's interesting because so far everyone's concerns for Zac are right on. The sharks and vultures out there ready to pick his bones to bits.

While at the same time, that's just what he's traversed as he cruised around the world, the sharks below ready to shred him to bits, and the vultures circling above awaiting him to drop dead.

Innately and instinctively he naturally transversed the original of all of this, one then must wonder, if the superficial, the hollywood, the man made same of it all, can trick him or overwhelm him or entice him, to lean over, fall overboard so the sharks can get to him, or lay their day dreaming till death's bed, where the vultures can then swoop in and pluck out his eyes.

Reality vs. fiction.

That there might be a reality tv series "thing" be worthy of recording for all"

NO to reality TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVERY person that has done reality TV has suffered enormous loss of themselves, family and friends.
Don't do it!!!!Stick to your book,documentary etc.

Marianne,

It is refreshing to read the comments of others and the applause you are receiving! I am so grateful to you and your family and the wonderful support you have and continue to give your son Zac. May your family be a model of what is truly possible when we let love rule and the ego go to the wayside.

Thank you,

Diann
