Meeting Jesse Martin

Meeting Jesse Martin aboard Intrepid

Alright, so the last couple days have been pretty packed. I woke up Monday morning to, "You have five minutes to get in the car. We're late!" On the way in to the marina I was told that my interviews that I was supposed to have at the house had been switched to the be at the boat because Jesse Martin, the Ozzy guy who holds the record for the youngest, non-stop and unassisted solo circumnavigation. He set the record in 2001 in his 34 ft Sparkman Stevens Lioheart, a boat similar to Intrepid.

After a couple interviews, Jesse came down to the marina with the ESPN crew. Jesse and I went down to Intrepid and I showed him around. We shared stories of the sea and things about the long ocean crossings alone. After an hour or so Jesse had to be off. It was awesome to finally meet Jesse, one of my inspirations for going on my trip.

Other than that, I'm going to New York this Saturday to be on the Mike Huckabee Show.
Keeping busy, for sure!

Cheers,
Zac

Zac,

Upon meeting Jesse, I wondered about your thoughts. I bet you found him to be pretty ordinary - yet very unique in that he is one of that special breed, like you, not satisfied with doing just the expected norm. A quote I found could likely fit you both.

"You know, heroes are ordinary people that have achieved extraordinary things in life."

Assuming he was somewhat a hero to you, and now you have become the hero to many others. Yet.. still just ordinary people... who have done extraordinary things.

May you continue to choose the things that God has put on your heart. As you become counseled on what to do and what not to do, always remember to choose Godly counsel... Be still... and listen.

Jesse set the record in 1999, after setting out in 1998. He would have been 20 if he'd set it in 2001.

Zac,
Thanks for updating us. Pretty cool to meet Jesse Martin. Will the interview with Huckabee be broadcast this Saturday or taped for a future time slot?
Also, any idea when the DVD will be going out? Anxious to see it!
Keep having fun!

That is so cool Zac. Inspiration comes in many forms. I know you have inspired me to one day learn to sail, buy my own boat and travel the world when I retire. Can't wait. Hopefully I will retire early. I see you still have the Zen bead bracelet I gave you when you left MDR for your trip. Very cool indeed. It looks like my prayers and all of the prayers from the Zac pac pulled you through some pretty scary situations out there. All the best and enjoy NYC my friend. Mike is a great guy.

@Mona, I think it was said soon after Zac returned that Part 1 of the DVD is available, with Part 2 TBA.

For everyone, the Huckabee show is listed to air at 8 p.m. eastern time on FNC.

It is about time, some media realize that more need to learn of your accomplishment, Zac. Good for Mike on scooping them all. Will alert my friends to watch.

Terrific that you met with Jesse.
As always, God bless.

Very cool, Zac! So, what has Jesse Martin been doing since his solo circumnav - did you get any ideas from him? Appreciate your keeping the blog up - don't mind that it's not as frequent, even though I still check every day :) But now when I check and there's no update, no big deal, because I'm not tense with wondering what's gone on with you out in the deep blue! But of course it's fun when you do have an update and we get a glimpse into the opportunities and activities that have come your way since coming home... Send my best to your mom & dad! Peace, Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher

I think you, Jesse, Mike Perham, Saito san, Natazsha, Jessica, and whoever else has sailed around the world should set up an international sailing foundation or trust or something, raise funds for it and the give sailing somethings (scholarships, lessons, trips, talks etc.) to underpriveldged children around the world.

Something. It's a small group of special people. Somehow colleborate and form something to share with everyone is the idea :-)

Question on the Aussie sailor's voyage: How could he carry enough groceries? Fuel? What is the definition of non-stop in this context?

Dear Zac,

New York! How cool is that!

I was on Good Morning America, Jane Pauley, the Today Show, and Oprah....but I never went to any of them. They mainly used stuff our local news had taped. Mostly...I was just too sick. One time they came to Duke to do an interview of me when I was on the transplant floor and I was playing chess with my mom. They asked her a question and she lost her concentration and I said, "Check Mate!" on national T.V! She was so embarrassed. I was only 5 then. Ha, ha, ha....

I hope your trip is fun and you get to see some stuff other than being on the T.V. show!

I have to go to UCSF tomorrow. I'm having a yucky biopsy. :( Kinda scared. Ok...really scared! But then I'm going to the Tut exhibit and I can't wait!

Let me know if you're ever in my neck of the woods! I'd love to take you to my school! That would be so cool!

I'll keep checking back to see what cool stuff you're getting to do!

Your Buddy,
Parker

Hi Zac,

You HAVE done what many people want to do. You are now a hero to thousands of people and they will read your books and say I want to do that. YOU are an inspiration, i I have no doubts that you will do great in life. And I cant wait to read your book.

Jordan

P.S
Question on the Aussie sailor's voyage: How could he carry enough groceries? Fuel? What is the definition of non-stop in this context?
These people that sail around the world take lots of freeze dried food and are very conservative and have huge amounts of storage, and they plan extremly well for what they re going to eat each and every day, if you read Jesse Martins Book you will see this it is a great read.

Jesse martin now that's someone to look up to his around the world alone is a record that will not be broken for many many years to come to be considered in the same breath with him is incredible.
There is another person preparing to set sail in September from Australia to beat Jesse's record called Jessica Watson (http://www.youngestround.com/index.html)
