Recent Travels & DVD

The last couple of weeks have been really crazy. We have been working late into the night on the final edits of my documentary Intrepid: The Zac Sunderland Story which has just come out.

Then I flew out to South Carolina to help out with the delivery of a Benteteau 46 down to Key West in Florda. It was a good trip - we managed to stay out of the Gulf Stream for the most part. The Gulf Stream rushes down the coast in the opposite direction to where we were going so we were about half of a mile off the beach where the current is less powerful all the way down the coast of Florida.

After a few days at sea, I steered Vama Nos into Key West dodging my way through all the reefs and sand bars that litter the coast line. We spent a day in Key West which was awesome during spring break, but then it was off to Chicago.

My good friend Will is going to a college called Wheaton up there so after a few hours in a plane I caught a train out there to visit. It was good times up there. I got to live some college life but the reason I was in Chicago was to speak at the Adventure and Travel show. So after a couple of days in the dorms I moved back to the hotel downtown and got ready for my speech.

Will and I freezing at Wheaton College

The show was good - they had some awesome speakers including Capt. Keith Colburn from the show Deadliest Catch. It was great to get a chance to hang out with him and talk about adventures on the sea.

On Sunday I did my speech and slideshow presentation. It went well with a packed out audience. I had to run straight to the airport to catch my flight home. I got home last night and am working hard on sending out these DVDs.

For those of you who may not know about my little sister Abby, she just entered the Furious 50s on her way to Cape Horn and is doing an amazing job. To follow her solo circumnavigation attempt, check out her web site at http://www.abbysunderland.com/.

Well I've gotta get back to it here but check out my DVD for sale in my store at http://www.zacsunderland.com/. It really shows you what it is like to single hand across oceans.

Cheers,

Zac

Sounds like you are getting into the swing of the speakers circuit, which is good.

Also happy that you enjoyed hanging out in the dorms with you friend and perhaps getting some insight into college life. I'm secretly hoping it rubbed off on you ;)

I am enjoying Abby's journey very much. Are you going to be able to sneak down to the Cape with your Dad? That would be special!

Hi There Zac....

I'm checking the old mailbox everyday hoping to see your dvd in it soon. Sounds like life is still pretty busy for you. Brandon is making plans to travel to Nepal, he will be there 2 years. I'll tell you more if you are ever interested. Sure proud of Abby, she seems to be doing real good. I check here blog and location every day. With her big following I haven't gotten as closely involved, but pray daily for her as it was with you. Tell your precious Mom and Dad hello for me.
Blessings,

Hey Zac, I followed your whole trip and loved every post. I hope I have a chance to see your presentation some time. I never comented because frankly I didn't know how or have the inclination to try it. I didn't know what to do anymore at lunch until your sister put up her sight. Then I started following Jessica when she left and now I'm a blogging fool. Abby just rounded the horn, awesome, and it made me think to check out your sight. You sound busy and I'm really glad your still getting deliveries in. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't get out sailing at least every couple of weeks. Anyway take care and when you get the chance to mail out the DVD's I can't wait to get my copy.
Be good.

Keeping up with Abby too, but her trip so far has been pretty tame compared to yours, which has its upside too.

I miss the daily check in and traveling vicariously thru your blog daily. Trip of a lifetime!

Hi There Zac,,

Well the pony express rider came by today and dropped off your dvd and never slowed his pony. As he rode off in the dust, I quickly ran inside and fired it up. Wow, I'm impressed. You have done an amazing job putting it all together. Worth the long wait.
Top job everyone!

Many thanks for the special memories and sharing a slice of your life with us.

Guess you already have a core group for prayer support for Abby, but let us know if you ever need any extra. We pray for her daily..

I have always had something Laurence said in an interview about Zac undertaking his trip.

That was he took something away from Zac as punishment for something (that part irrelavent), and it was a result of taking away that somethng of Zac's that he reflected on his life (well maybe his actions), that motivated him to do this voyage.

Ever since then I've been curious to know what exactly it was that Laurence took away from Zac (I think Laurence said something to the effect something important or something Zac loved or something he cherished or something like that :-) ).

I'd love to know what it was that Laurence took away. Is it in the video or will it be in the book, or maybe Mom or even Zac can let us know.

My only guesses would be:

a. his surfboard
b. his skateboard
c. his xbox

Can it have been something as simple as that?

I can't think of anything a 16 yo or younger SoCal boy would find more horrifying to have been taken away.

It's certainly not his collection of Harry Potter books. Or is it :-))

BTW- for non NA people who know this voyage and Abby's voyage inside out, is there any way to incorporate the sale of Zac's DVD(s) through shoecity.com online? Or even setup shop on Amazon.com where purchase/payment/delivery is undertaken by them. Outsourced as in this case locally is a bit daunting for the security minded of us (nothing to do with the Sunderlands) but int'l recourse with a third party unknown outsourced cc taker is a no no.

@Anonymous: The thing that Laurence took away from Zac was his playing football at the local highschool. It is covered in the DVD.

Hello Zac,
I'm an 11 year old from a school in England. I am writing because my school's topic is for survival. So we are researching you and the things that you have done. Firstly, even though this was a long time ago, congratulations. It must have felt great to accomplish so much AND break two world records! So well done. I don't know if your sister has finished her thing but good luck, or well done. I don't know. How has she done? Or is doing? I don't know whether she has taken longer than you or anything but this blog was a little while ago. But I'm guessing I should say well done to her. If she is as skilled at boating as you, then she will have done well. Unless she wasn't even doing boating. I haven't checked. Good luck with your DVD and also well done on your speech! :D
