Hawaiian Holiday

Intrepid at Hawaii Yacht Club
Will and I on the North Shore

The last few days here in Hawaii have been great!

Waikiki is crazy busy after my time alone at sea. The beaches are beautiful but there are hundreds of tall hotels stretching for miles up and down the coast. First thing on Saturday, after eating, was to go down to the boat and check her out. She handled her trip to Hawaii very well. Dad and I ran through things quickly and made a few lists of work. I packed up my laundry and spent some quality time at the laundrymat. My friend from school, Will Craddick, who is spending the summer here working with his uncle, took the bus over to Hawaii Yacht Club. It was great to see another familiar face. After having lunch with mom and dad we walked into the town of Waikiki. We rented surfboards and hit the Kiwi Reef Break. We spent a few hours dodging coral reefs and surfing. The weather is so warm and so is the water.

After that, the film crew who are helping document my trip, mom, dad, Will and I drove up to the North Shore to watch the sunset and do some filmng. It was great to see more of the island of Oahu because Waikiki is so built up but the North Shore area is much more remote. It really wasn't what I had expected. I was thinking of 20' waves and crazy barrels but we jumped out of the Jeep and ran over to where the famous Pipeline is supposed to be only to see 2 maybe 3 foot waves! Oh well, will have to come back in the winter.

We ate fresh fish at Haleiwa Joe's on the beach and headed back to the hotel for the night.

On Sunday morning, Greg and Todd from Itik Productions and I hopped on a plane to the island of Kauai to meet Bethany Hamilton and her family. You may have heard of Bethany. About 5 years ago when she was 13, she was out surfing and was attacked by a shark. She lost her left arm in the attack but what is more amazing is that after healing up from the attack, she got up and went surfing again. She is currently one of the top surfers in competition. Check out her web site: http://www.bethanyhamilton.com/ Greg rented a convertable and we bombed down the highway with the top down to meet the Hamilton's at their church. We were late for the service but just in time for lunch! We met Bethany and her parents and after hanging out for awhile we went back to their house, grabbed some boards and hit the local break. Seeing how I didn't have a board with me, Bethany was kind enough to loan me one of her pink ones. Thanks Bethany!! We paddled out and chilled awhile in the warm water. Bethany is amazing how she tears it up on the waves. After they got a few good shots, Greg and Todd came out and surfed for awhile before we headed back to Bethany's house for some sushi. Bethany's dad took us out in his dinghy to show us the around the bay where they live. When we got back we said our goodbyes and I promised to take Bethany out sailing some day. The day ended too soon and we had to head back to the airport and get back to Waikiki. Greg stayed at the airport and caught his red eye back to LA. Dad came and picked Todd and I up and I had another deep sleep at the hotel.

Monday was the assigned work day so we got up early and got right to it stowing all the fresh provisions, fixing some tangled rigging and spraying Salt Away in all the hardware to keep the rigging running free. The canvas guy came down and measured for my new lee cloth (to hold me in my bunk when there is a big swell running) and arranged to fix up my lee clothes that go around the cockpit. My parents and Todd and I had a last meal together at the all-you-eat buffet at the hotel :) before they all flew out.

On Tuesday morning, I finished up some predeparture preparations. About 11:00am Will's bus rolled in and we hit the surf until 5:00pm. We got some great waves off the reef. It was breaking 5s and 6s on the outer breaks. It was really a rush dropping into a 6 footer with coral in only 2 feet of water under the board. Serious motivtion to stay on the board! We went back to Hawaii Yacht Club for lunch/dinner and went back to the beach to get a shave ice and hang out on the beach. Since we were walking everywhere, we walked over to the Ala Moana Shopping Center to the skateboard shop to find some faster transportation. T & C made us up a skateboard which Will bought for me as a going away present! We skated around the mall (and through a few stores) before heading back to the marina. We left the board at the boat and went for a walk down the beach to see the nightlife. We walked all the way down Waikiki Beach, hit the Burger King and then walked back to the boat to crash for the night.

Today, Wednesday, is supposed to be departure day but I am waiting for the electrician to arrive to go through my charging system. Though I managed on the power I had, it seems that the solar panels should be doing more. Hopefully he will be able to get to the bottom of things. I have been working on my blog/homework and troubleshooting my on board email with Ron du Bois. Ron is a good friend of a friend of my dad's and has been great organizing my stay here and helping with the computers etc. I had an interview with Sonrise, a morning news show here in Oahu.

Here is the link: http://kgmb9.com/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8266&Itemid=108

I am excited to get back on the water but it looks like I will be delayed at least until tomorrow so we can replace the solar panel regulator. It isn't functioning as it should probably due to moisture. The panels still charge some but it could be a lot better. Dad and I decided to wait for the part rather here than head to more remote places to do the repair. Hopefully, I will be able to head out in the late morning.
Cheers,
Zac

Hey Zac,
Sounds like you had fun in Hawaii. It was probably a nice break to see people you know and hang with friends. Well everyone I know here is praying for you! And for the wind to pick up!

Zac!

Bummer to hear about the panels. Hopefully you can get the problem fixed quickly. It was so awesome hanging out and surfing with you bro! Definetly a high point of my trip to get to see you and your family :D.... Haha I would have liked to see Greg and Todd surfing! Those two were quite the pair. Hope you have a safe and speedy journey to the Marshalls!

Hi Zac,

I'm glad that you're up and running again. It sounds as though you had a great time in Hawaii.

I follow Formula One motor racing and when the drivers are interviewed they always stress how hard their team has worked to get them to where they are. Without detracting in any way from your fantastic achievement to date I hope you acknowledge all the support you are getting from an icredibly hard working team. When do your Mum and Dad find time to sleep?

I understand "Weather Windows" but would be very interested to know why you have chosen your specific planned ports of call. Have you got family connections at any of them? Some of them will be a much greater challange for your Dad to get to than Hawaii!

Boredom! Well I never thought that would be a problem. I hope you get plenty of interest and excitement on this leg but not more than you can successfully handle.

Sail on!

Tim.

Way to go Zac! It sounds like you had a great time. I was sorry that you had to settle for a Burger King while I was wolfing down Tommy's and In n' Out, but that is the sacrafice one must make if they want to surf in 6' swells with coral reefs just under the surface.

Hopefully you will be underway by the time these posts are up. Thanks for sharing Hawaii with us. I think I speak for all the readers who do not post comments, we share your joy on shore but are looking forward to your journey on the high seas.

Godspeed. Bill Mann

Sound like it's been good over there! Hopefully the problem with the solar panels will get fixed up soon so you can be moving again.

And let's hope the winds are stronger for the next leg of the journey than they were for the first.

Safe journey,

The interview with Sonrise was quite good with the exception of the interviewer. She was like fingers running down a chalkboard with her silly giggling for no reason. Zac was so much more mature next to her. I feel bad that he had to endure that.

Zac,
So great to hear from you again! It's wonderful to read your Blog about Hawaii. I told you it was beautiful and I knew you would have a great time! So excited to get back on the water with you. I am leaving for Aruba on Saturday so I will have a weeks worth to catch up on when I get back to Austin. I see by your map that you will pass close to Aruba. Do you plan a stop there? The people are wonderful and would welcome you there. I have been going there on Vacation for 20 years and lived there in the 90's for a year and a half and again in 2002. I plan to retire there when the time comes. I will check your Blog on Saturday morning before I leave. Please be safe and may the "wind be with you!" You are always in my prayers.

Hey Zac,

I work for a company in Honolulu. Every time I go there, I have to work the entire time. You have spent your time in Hawaii exactly as it should be done.

Good to hear to have gotten re-energized and rested while spending time with your friends and family. Isn't it a drag that Honolulu has so many Burger Kings?

zac,

Remember that one of the things that you must do is have fun, and it sounds like you are. I am sure it was good to see everyone, and fix the things needed to be fix. I am sure you are ready to get going and get into a plan of what to do every day. Have not heard much about the studies, but hope they are going well. Keep us up dated as for me I would really enjoy what you are doing. Do you think at 65 I could be the oldest to sail around the world? Maybe I can buy your boat when you come back and try it. At least the ship will know where to go becuase she has been there. Best of everything. Let us know when you fix the panel.

Zac,

We are so glad you have had a good time in Paradise. It was interesting to hear about your meeting with Bethany Hamilton, and that you were able to go surfing with her. I posted earlier a prayer that you would ‘paint’ wisely the experiences you chose. I think your meeting with Bethany was very wise indeed.

Being that you are only one guy on-board, you have room to store extra parts. What kind of parts list do you keep on the boat? When you are talking about replacing a regulator for the solar panel, I was wondering if it would be prudent to add an engine reg and one of those to your extra parts list. They are easy to replace at sea and the cost is minimal. I am sure your Dad has covered all bases.

Like others have posted, you will more than likely be underway before you see this post, so good sailing to you.

Man, your onboard diet is going to seem boring after the feasts you had in Hawaii.

Glad you're back to blogging. Many of us are hooked, and those few empty days were disappointing.

Nice long post. I was hoping that you would have a few days and some good times before heading back out into the open water. Sounds like some great surfing too !
It looks like these first two legs will be the toughest. From there it appears that a lot of islands will be popping up which brings a little more confidence just in case you need to pick up something. That is cool you got to hang with a buddy. Man you tore up Hawaii! Onto the Marshalls.

Good Morning!

I just wanted to thank you for being such an inspiration. My wife and I have been taking sailing lessons over the last year at Orange Coast College, hoping to finally get out past breakwaters and into actual ocean next week for a few minutes. It will be a challenge for us, and we both look forward to the day when we can live up to the skills that you exhibit at less than half of our age.

I've also got my synagogue's teen group following your journey, and they're inspired not only by your ability and adventure, but also the fact that you're not shy about asking for prayer. Adat HaMashiach (Congregation of the Messiah) in Irvine is praying for your safety and success!

Hello Zac,

I'm sure by the time you get this or it's posted you might be at sea. It sounds like you had a great time in Hawaii. Hopefully the solar panels are all taken care of and they charge properly before you leave.

Let's get on with the second leg and hopefully you'll have favorable winds to the Marshall Islands. Thank you so much for the detailed blogs that you have posted the last few days. It's great to be able to read them and follow your fun time as well as your ocean journey. Just came back from Oahu a few months ago and your pictures made we wish I was back there.

Yesterday I was watching the Wednesday evening sail races from Burton Chase Park. Your journey was on my mind while watching and I thought "they are so close to shore". After you leave you don't see any land and ocean completely surrounds you and that's all you can see just ocean all around you. People who don't sail have no idea what this feels like. Sailors don't think twice about it but people going to Catalina Island (only 22 miles from Marina Del Rey) get that feeling after land isn't in sight anymore. Some people even get scared of this thought.

Hopefully people will grasp what your really doing here and how much sailing skills, preparation, planning, coordination, and navigation skills it takes to do something like this. My sails come up for you Zac and your parents in honor for doing this and showing the world that kids in this day and age can accomplish incredible things. It's nice to know that your parents did such a great job raising you and that they are 100% committed to helping you achieve this record.

Good to hear you have had a good stop over in Hawaii.

I do have one thing to ask before you get to far from Hawaii though. The coordinates for where you were at the Marina never got posted. Those of us out here posting your trip on maps so we can watch your trip could really use those. Can you post them?

Good luck and good sailing to you! You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.... Then someone at my side says, "There. He's gone."
and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There. He's gone."-there are other eyes watching him comeing, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout. "There he comes!"
And we all know that the glad voices at each pause of your journey will be all of us reading and praying for you.

In response to "Mary - Central Florida" who asked about the missing position during the Hawaii
stay... try the following;

21.2853N, 157.8434W

Unfortunately when using google earth to obtain the coordinates I notice that the image of the yacht club and the dock nearby does not exactly match the photo in the blog placed on July 15. In any case, those coordinates should be pretty close.

To Andy/Texas.

Looks like the red Hawaii flag is the flag for Hawaii Yacht Club http://www.quanticoyc.org/Burgees/Hawaii.jpg.

(The Hawaiian flag has a union jack with 8 vertical red/blue/white stripes btw)

And it's a good question... are we going to see additional flags from the various stops?

Great to hear from you and all about your visit with your family in Hawaii. It must have been a great thrill to meet Bethany Hamilton AND surf with her, even if it was on one of her pink boards LOL! I imagine that visiting with her and her family was a great boost to you and your motivation to continue on with your adventure. Whenever you become lonely over the next leg you are able to recall all of the great moments you had in Hawaii!
You probably have launched for the Marshall's by now (I hope) and we can't wait to hear of your daily accomplishments which will hopefully involve catching of fish, mysterious maid service, perfect winds, absence of booby birds, ample moments (i.e. hours) of rest and most of all safe travels.
