Note from Mom
Hey All!
Long day of squalls for Zac and some computer troubles. Fixed the one problem only to have salt water splash on the computer charger today! It is carefully drying so no power to the thing and no proper blog either.
He is making great time. He thinks he may be in a current because he is making such incredible speeds - 7 knots and up! The 3 hour swells have turned into walls and are coming more frequently which has been hard. The boat is getting quite wet. That with the heat has Zac a little frazzled. When I mentioned that this will be the hardest job he ever has, he replied, "No, not really. It's still pretty cool out here." WOW...
News from the homefront:
1. Ben turned one! He is a mini man.
2. The guys from Ocean Rescue TV who brought you the original video on the site are pouring through hours of video and earmarking clips (lots of clips) for the site. They should be up in a few weeks? Not sure on that but be assured that they will be good!
3. The web site is up and running after an unknown glitch that lasted most of the day yesterday. The media page and photo albums have been updated. There is a new page called Intrepid/FAQs. It has a lot of common questions with Zac's answers compiled for us by our own Zac Paccer (?) Marilyn from Woodland Hills! There is also a section on Intrepid that will be updated eventually. You boaties can fire Zac and Laurence all the questions you like.
4. We are still working on routing for Zac. Lots of 'if - then' situations. Will post his whereabouts as soon as responsibly possible.
We have been incredibly blessed during this venture and are in awe of all that God has done!
We love you guys. It takes half an hour to cut and paste all of your comments in the little emails that his sailmail can handle but he loves them!

When you said he may be in a current, I though of "Finding Nemo" and the EAC! Ok, I love the movie! "mount wannahockaloogie" :-)
So may be Zac is on the EAC, wikipedia says EAC can go up to 7knots...

Absolutely loved Zac's FAQ's. I know you really must have put some time into that. Thanks so much! Reading through it was like being on board, seeing what you see, and doing what you do. I feel like I went sailing with you today.
But then even more it so gives assurance that you are totally prepared and disciplined.
I also love your moms words. She is such a great lady. You must be proud to have a mom like her. I love reading her posts. I love seeing the family bond, and knowing you can talk to your siblings.

Thanks for the many tips on the correct spelling of "Straits" -- I guess both Zac and I will be REALLY clear on the spelling now! ;-) Usually search engines are so quick to come up with "did you mean..." alternatives.

Wow indeed! It seems Zac is really getting the most out of this quest and that is good to see.
Thanks for your notes when needed. I think (hope) everyone now understands the need for discretion as Zac turns west. I also suspect that anyone who has looked at satellite images of Torres now can see the obstacle course facing Zac.

Sorry to hear Zac is having such a hard time with all the squalls. The Zac Pac might start having withdrawals since salt water splashed on this computer. Hopefully it will be up and running fine again. We must say Thank You to Mom for posting this for Zac so that we can all stay informed.
Mom, say Happy Birthday to Ben from all the Zac Pac and we're sorry that Zac couldn't be there to celebrate with the whole family.
Can't wait to see the video's from Ocean Rescue. This is a crazy mans job looking at tons of video and doing all the edits to make this happen. I have family who work in video production in Manhattan Beach and it really takes a lot of time to put video together. Since I know how difficult this really is I'll wait patiently for the video.

Now that I see Zac’s Westward jog and approximate position (from the Pacific Magazine estimate), he’s definitely in the South Equatorial Current and flowing somewhat with it.

The South Equatorial Current starts just above the Solomon’s and he’s to the East of the SE tip of PNG on a longitudinal line…
You can use the cursor on Google Earth to get the approximate coordinates lat/lon from the Pacific Magazine article) then, use the land mass reference of Google Earth to view the current map I’ve posted on the temphost site and you can see, Zac is SMACK into some good flow!
Great place to be… A port quarter wind, and the SEC currents are very favorable for good time, with a Port Quarter wind, I suspect he might surf a swell slightly quite often too…

I'm getting a good geography lesson, researching and looking for places I've never known of or thought of before. This adventure is turning out to be quite an educational experience for lots of us as well.
One question I haven't been able to find the answer myself. What is a "Shellback"?

Shellback is a name from the Navy and Marines (I was in the Marines in the late 70’s early 80’s) that you get when you cross the Equator.
There is also Emerald Shellback, and Gold Shellback, respectively for crossing the crossing Greenwich Meridian line and International Data lines.
A pollywog is someone who has never crossed the Equator, but is about to for the first time…
I don’t know more about it than that, but I’m sure some Googling will have more…

Thanks for 'filling in'. What are you concerned about? You do a great job. Perhaps you should have been a journalist yourself. That would probably be easier than being mom to a herd of little Sunderlands, but nearly not as satisfying nor as much fun. If they all have Zac's spirit of wonder and adventure, whooaaa! Never a dull moment for our candidates for Mother of the Year -- and for the Father of the Year. What a household ... or boathold.

A "Shellback" is obviously one who has crossed the equator. The real question is the source or origin of the term. I'm sure it has something to do with sea-turtles, but what and why. We'll be informed in due course. Marianne or Marilyn will clue us in.
I'm looking forward to reading Zac's blog for the next 10 months or so, but am prematurely concerned with what I'll do when the adventure is completed. Checking in and catching up has become such a significant part of my daily routine and on most days is the high point. I could join Roz Savage via her blog. She's the English lady who is now rowing, yes, rowing, across the Pacific. It could be a substitute, but can never replace this adventure for which Zac is our leader.
If the hydrated computer gets pneumonia and dies, I trust that whomever meets Zac and Intrepid in Australia will have a replacement in the luggage. Also, take our man some peanut butter, nature's most nearly perfect food. Tastes good, too.

As always, Thank You Mom ! and happy b-day to the youngest Sunderland Ben. Like Peter commented, I love the FAQ's and all of the updates going with the web-site and blog. The more the better. Sometimes I feel like I am right on the Intrepid with Zac. Zac, you definitely know how to write descriptively and tell us exactly what you are up too!. I did send my letter to the President. It seems they have specific protocol, but Zac has it covered being American. I provided all necessary info, so I am sure the Whitehouse will be in touch at some point.
Marriane and Laurence, a thought about what you could add to the website. Although the website is about Zac and his journey, it would be nice to have a link about your love story and more about your early travels with Zac. You guys are obviously a very loving a spiritually grounded family, it is no wonder Zac is who he is, thanks to great genes and parenting. You both deserve a lot of credit. Something to think about. I was looking at all the photos and wanting more background on the wonderful Sunderland family. All the best! Keep it up Zac.

I've added a screen shot from my Nav Software showing Zac's approximate location (from the Pacific Magazine article) which is the little green boat in the upper right, and then placed my cursor at the northern tip of Australia.

You can see that it's 1,403nm to the tip of N. Aust., in the Torres Straits...
One heck of a guy Zac is, man oh man... 1,400nm to the tip.
It's another 640nm to Darwin from there...

Hey Zac,
I am interested in how the boat is rigged and saw you have two roller furling sails..jib and stay. The stay sail is something I don't see that often...are you using it in conjunction with the jib or alone with the main? The new web site improvements are really good and I am checking it several times a day.
Don't give up on the fishing mate! Keep that line out. I bet fish would be a welcome taste treat right now.

Hi - I’ve posted 5 new images at the bottom of www.temphost100.com to show prevailing currents, winds and circumnavigation routes (cruising vs. racing) and Zac’s “modified” route where he’s added more of a “racers” leg around S. Africa…
You might have to do a Ctrl-F5 to force a full cache refresh if you’ve looked at the other images recently, this will force new content to be displayed.
Image #7 shows the prevailing oceans AND prevailing wind currents, yes, both viewed as “currents”… Aero-hydro-dynamics are largely the same be it water or air… The dark-grey and larger arrows on Image #7 are the prevailing wind currents. NOTE on this image that the “trades” switch from a prevailing NE to a prevailing SE at the Equator. Just like a toilet or sink drain reverses south of the Equator.
Image #8 shows the typical “racing” around route, NOTE that they go down to the bottom of the world, basically… for two reasons #1 – The distance around is less “at the bottom of the basket ball” if you will.
#2 – The prevailing winds are current rip and roar down there and for them, it’s all about speed, safety is VERY secondary.
Image #9 shows the typical cruising route, more predictable conditions, you’re typically not racing.
Image #10 shows Zac’s planned route, he’s adding a route more typical of a “racing” vessel….
NOTE – That Zac is doing a “modified” version of the cruising route, and eliminating the NE Africa and Red Sea leg and taking more of a RACING route around S Africa / Cape of Good Hope. I suspect for one primary reason that we’ve discussed on the blog and that is the “likely” danger associated with pirates and thieves in and around NE Africa, Somalia, and the Red Sea.
Image #11 is something I hacked together to provide more of a visual of Equatorial Navigation vs. Southern Ocean Navigation…
The route around S. Africa while safer from unwanted visitors, is notorious for rough weather, heavy wind and seas… I’m sure Zac and his land based team will do a lot of calculations for the “good-weather-window” and the timing of his departure from Durban.
For me, the S. Africa leg is the one I’ll be on pins and needles the most…

PS – A good racing around DVD can be found on NetFlix called – Volvo Round the World Race: The SEB Stopover Reports (2002). But this is big crews, big boats, big budgets, but still a great DVD
The reason I haven't posted and probably won't until we hear his safe position again is that "I"m, holding my breath!!!" and praying that every darn obstacle that is thrown at this young man in the next two weeks is met with victory.

To fellow Zac Pac devotees:
As you may have seen several blogs ago, Zac posted an interactive world map of pirating incidents. Since Zac is nearing an area where such incidents have occurred, which is why he is not posting his location for the time being, I thought some of you might want to revisit the map, or for those new to the Zac Pac, view the map for the first time. As with other interactive maps, you can put your cursor on any point on the map, hold down the left mouse button and drag the map left or right, and up and down. On the left side you can use the bar to zoom in or out.
It is true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Fortunately though, as you'll see on the map, there have been no reported incidents close to Zac's route to Darwin. (The International Maritime Bureau, who provides the map, says though, that many incidents go unreported.) All the more reason for Zac to refrain from posting his location for now.

To all inquiring on letters to the President. I think the goal is to get Zac a very special greeting and accomodation/recognition at the White House. Doesn't matter who is in office. Because of the volume of requests they receive it is best to get this started way early.
All letters to the President are sorted by staff and sent to the appropriate department. Due to the huge volume of e-mail and requests the Whitehouse receives, it is extra important to use regular US snail mail for your/our requests. From the Whitehouse Web site:

Obviously this event would not occur until Zac is back and well rested. I am sure their will be a flood of requests from TV, David Letterman, Jay Leno etc. Zac is representing America, and our youth. Also he is a great ambassador for our country. Simply reference Zac's website and all of it's content, previous media coverage etc. If anyone would like advice on how to appropriately correspond with the Whitehouse, simply e-mail me. Remember leave all political views and/or comments out of your request. This is about Zac.
It doesn't hurt to send multiple requests. They will make to the appropriate person and/or staff. The goal is to keep it up. I will let all of you know when and if they respond to my letter. We will let Marianne and Laurence take it from there. Either way Zac will be recognized by our acting President in office on his return. Great Kid, Great Accomplishment, Great American= Grand Recognition!

what a glorious glorious promise from a FAITHFUL FAITHFUL LORD.
boy it sure is getting exciting,
now for sure is the time for all of us to pray with out ceasing...
the moon is waning down, and at night everything will be becoming more and more exsenuated,
pray that Zac can get his power naps and be vigilant and forward thinnking... sleep when you can Zac
not reactive but proactive...
that he would be one with Intrepid,
knowing and sensing her needs...and vulnerabilities...
much like a concert pianist being able to sense and know their instrument...
pray that Zac can be in the WORD, and of course it be in him...
not just reading but taking possession... (attacks come when we are weak and tired)
that he would eat (regularly), and keep up his strength, he will need it...
pray for wisdom for Team Sunderland as the "IF...THEN's come into focus"
thank you so so much marianne and laurence and team Sunderland..
for the diligence and keeping the ZacPac informed...
we are all like a bunch of overly protective grandmothers for our beloved Zac,
thank you for sharing him with us all,and allowing us all to come along and participate
and Zac we ride every wave with you, as Intrepid dips her nose, remember, like a thoroughbred she was designed for this,
but so so few ever slip the mooring lines...
