Mom here...
Just had a nice talk with Zac who was unpacking groceries from the rental car and checking off a list with way too many things to do today. He apologizes for the bloglessness. Laurence is heading out today so they are prioritizing and scheming how to spend the morning.
Meanwhile, Skype's blogger, Howard Wolinsky, stayed up late to videotape his interview with Zac. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and hope you do too.

Being a native Californian, I believe what you interpret as a "Brit accent" is what we Californian's call "surf-rat speech." The only word that was missing was, "Duuude." :)

Zac sounds like he has a strong North American accent to me! :-)
Besides, how would being in SA make him sound English (which I assume is what you mean, rather than 'Brit', which would include Scottish, Welsh Northern Irish as well)? The SA accent is very distinctive and like nothing else. :-)

Daveh, what do you mean by a Brit accent - there's no such thing.
The British Isles has a wide range of very different accents, from a variety of English ones (compare Cornish with Yorkshire, for instance). Then there are Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which each has its own range of distinctive accents and dialects.
I think there is less variety in the USA, but compare someone from New York with a Texan or a Californian and you'll surely notice a difference. Zac's accent sounds Californian to me, and I'm not even from the USA!

Fun stuff! Thanks Marianne for sharing that youtube vid with us. I was searching for anything 'Zac' or 'Mike' on youtube just the night before, so this was a real treat. And it is so good to see him looking refreshed, because in some of the pics taken when he has just gotten into port, I'm reminded of the 'Old Man of the Sea.' Then after he gets his 'land legs,' he's more like 'Sindbad the Sailor.' Perhaps it's the 'port wine.' I'm kidding of course! :-) ☼♫♣♠◘♥☻
Well Zac, I hope you and Mike get another chance to get together and perhaps Mike can meet 'Intrepid.' Then do something together in Cape Town that you will want to write about in your books. That being said, the list of things chaps do in Cape Town might be narrowed quite a bit considering thousands of readers will be privy to it also. :-) ;-)
@Melanie, that was hilarious...about the 'surf-rat' accent...Duuude! I've never heard about 'surf-rat' accent, but I have heard Duuude. I guess I'm too far from the ocean!
Well Zac, the next leg will be a pretty long one and the one after that even longer. I would like to see a picture of you and Intrepid before you leave for St. Helena. I don't know why. She was looking a little like the 'Old lady of the Sea.' I bet she is shining and rearing to go also!

While I live in Florida, I have spent a ton of time in California (coastal and Sierra-Nevada Mountains alike) so I’m quite familiar with the California accent…
With that said, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in England and received a healthy lecture from a feisty cabby about American’s still be uncivilized, how to say 44 (for-ee-fore) etc… The guy had me and my business partner cracking up… He even went into the whole Cornish vs. etc.. area… A great lesson… great humor, I’ll never forget the guy…
I’ve spent time in S. Africa and Australia, and through my companies and business dealings converse with all of these, among others of course too…
While I agree with the poster about NYC vs. Texas, in my naive way, I sense similarities between the Scotts, Irish, English, Aussies and S. Africans…
Also, Zac’s heritage is potentially at play here, like mine, from Boston, although I’m a Florida Native, I still say things differently like dawg, paak the kagh, etc…

I have to say that, having spoken with Zac at least twice a day over the past 7.5 months, he is difinitely picking up and African lilt as well as a few sayings. I have always loved the South African accent having worked with a wonderful South African woman while in college. Just my .02!

@ Becky- "Surf-rat speak" is an affectionate term reserved for those young and old who thrive on chasing the biggest and best waves up and down the Pacific Coast.
Great to see the interview... I live in Cali, SoCal to be precise. His accent seems to a bit of a mix. Definitely is has Brit influence, surfer dude, youth SoCal (quick) cadence and etc. I did notice differences from previous interviews months before. Definitely some SA influence there. Which only means Zac is soaking in a lot including the culture. Sounds to me a great adventure!

Talking of accents....I was born in the States, lived in UK since I was 13, except for 3 years in Zambia and recently 3 years in Florida and when we visit the US, many ask if we are from Germany....go figure!

At my case, sharing this experience, in this way, with the Sunderland Family is way better than Facebook any day!

Glad to see you made it to port safely. I was concerned when I saw the photo (prior to interview) as you are beginning to look a little like the old man of the sea. I noticed that Mike was looking good and also after being out to Sea for 5 weeks his hair was cut nicely. You tend to always wear hats, is that to keep the hair manageable?
You may consider a nice trim to make yourself appear a little more presentable to the press and your supporters.
Also, living here in California, I don't detect any accent.
Otherwise again good to hear your safe and preparing for your upcoming voyage towards your home port.

Just a question or two on financing such a large venture and trip. I too am planning an adventurous trip that I plan to obtain World Records on. My question is how does one handle the Taxes due end on all the donations, gifts, etc., that are provided to the Individual for the upcoming quest. Is there a special Tax code, or some way to receive these items without having to pay heavy taxes on them? Thank you for your answers in advance.

Great to HEAR an interview with Zac. I always thought while reading Zac's blog that I could detect some nuances in his accent. But then again, being from Birmingham, (Alabama, that is) we don't have accents so I can't add much to that discussion.
Glad that the Zacpack could add some clarification. Zac sounded like a world adventurer to me.
Hope the rest, repair and resupply is going well.

Generally what happens people fall in love with Cape Town and don't want to leave. :-)
Cape Town is very S.CA like, like La Jolla, California. For Brits. It sure beats going home. Plus it's got cricket and rugby.
Once you in the groove, you in the groove.
And it's not for everyone.
All that and EU, GP USD conversion rate makes for a splended life.
Provided you are proficient with a handgun.
And we know Zac is :-)
