Cape Town at Last

Hello All,
Been a busy day for all of the Sunderlands today.
I had only a brief call from Zac letting me know that he made it in to Cape Town riding in on a nice 25 knots from the south which was great until he tried to head south into Cape Town Harbor when the wind became (not again!) on the nose!
He was met at sea by Laurence, Jen and Geoff Tregaskis, who was kind enough to take them out in one of his Bavaria 33s to meet Zac off of the harbor.
They took Zac to a late dinner and everyone went home until tomorrow.
Laurence's internet service at the hotel is down - surprise! Will have to wait for more news perhaps tonight.
Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement. It is a day to remember for sure!
Cheers,
Marianne

One of the best posts by any one of you! So, here we are in Cape Town, at last! Whew! And Dad and Jen are with us. Can it get any better than this? Well, perhaps if Mom was here also, but let's not be greedy!

How long is the planned stay in CT? Looking forward to the next post.

I'm so happy, I'm gonna go eat some bugs!

Enjoy your time with Dad in Cape Town and make sure Jen takes lots of pics for us to see. Can't wait to hear about this leg in your own words. Well done!

Congratulations Zac on achieving another important port on your quest.

I am following you and Mike as you both circumnavigate in different directions. He is now about 1400 NM east of CT and heading there. I do hope that it will be possible for you and your dad to meet up with him and his dad. I'd love to be a fly on the ceiling as you exchange stories of your voyages.
Good luck on the Atlantic crossing.

Zac is in Cape Town!
That has a great sound to it. Cape Town, the town at the Cape of Good Hope captures the imagination. For centuries sailors have stopped here to rest, restock, repair on their long sail around Africa just like Zac is doing now. I wonder if their is still some tall ship flair in the harbor or the town.

Enjoy Zac,
All the best,
Randolf

Hello Marianne,

It's great to hear the news of Laurence meeting Zac at sea. I'm sure you're very excited about this recent news. Hopefully Laurence will have an Internet connection soon. Hopefully your men will have a great time enjoying each others company.

Good luck with the communication issues. Take care Marianne and also try and get some rest because I'm sure you really need it!!!

Since Jen is there again, do you think it might be possible to get some photos from inside Intrepid? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know what Zac's space looks like and how it has fared over these months.

Congrats on the progress.

Good form Zac!

Hallelujah and Amen!

And to quote a phrase from 'Independence Day,' "Not bad, not bad at all!"

I hope you will be able to 'boot up' and see the rest of the Sunderland family on Stickam or whatever video blog you use.

@Daveh
Mike Perham is still about 1300 miles out; and you mentioned a weather monster the size of Texas brewing near the Cape of Good Hope. What is your opinion of how it will affect Mike? I worry about him too!

I read in the Daily Breeze article (thanks for that Melanie!)that Zac is planning on spending about 3 weeks in Cape Town getting Intrepid ready for that very long voyage across the Atlantic; so there is every reason to believe that these two young circumnavigators will be spending some quality time sharing exciting, dramatic stories about life on the high seas!

Enjoy your time together in Cape Town Zac and Lawrence!

Not bad, not bad at all!

Typical. I had wondered what their response might be. Just exactly that. Sour grapes if you ask me:

Kizzi Nkwocha, a spokesman for Mike, said that the young Briton will not be initiating a meeting with his American competitor but that both he and his father Peter, who is flying out to South Africa to rendezvous with his son, are aware that they may well bump into one another. 'The focus is to repair totallymoney.com and to get underway as quickly as possible. There are no plans to meet at this stage, but if Zac wants to meet Mike or if the parents want to meet we are not going to stop them,' Mr Nkwocha said.

So happy for you!!
When you are in the water, are you officially in the south atlantic now?
I will gladly say GOODBYE to the indian ocean - but maybe not the islands and the people...I would visit them! But prob. not by yacht. :)
So, enjoy your stay on the "other side" of africa. May it be all it needs to be a more.
Blessings on you and your "crew" coming in.

@Zac – Well done! Can’t imagine how excited your dad was on the B33 heading out to meet you… Just like the fly over in the straits heading into Darwin………

@Marianne – Get some sleep [laughing…..]

@Becky - Mike appears to be about 1,100 nm East, to slightly Southeast of Cape Town. He’s averaging 10kts, so about 240nm a day, puts him hitting Cape Town around Friday, or Saturday.

As Grantt Fjermedal said to me in an eMail; “It would be a HISTORIC MEETING of these two kids – one heading East and the other West”

As far as Mike Perham’s Weather… The storm(s) are just to his south, and he’s going to be in light to moderate shifty winds for the next 3-4 days, lot’s of sail trim and adjusting going on I’m sure.

Boy, Laurence sure has been doing a lot of traveling due to Zac's journey---how does he afford all those flights?

I agree, I can't believe those are Mike's sentiments. That spokesperson should be fired. Totally unsporting attitude.

I'd imagine Mike would love to take Zac on a tour of his high tech boat, and vice versa, and for sure swap tips and tricks and info about the areas each have just sailed from and through.

Hopefully it will all fall into it's natural place in the coming next while.

@ anonymous re: Laurence's flight to Cape Town.
Frequent flier miles were graciously donated by John Gezelius. This and possibly any other concerns you may have are most likely contained in previous blog entries by Zac or another family member.

I know that Zac and his family are extremely grateful to those who have supported Zac in this endeavor, whether it be by generous donations small and large, or by providing Zac moral and spiritual support. Their humble acknowledgement of all who support Zac is quite evident if you monitor these pages frequently.

Congratulations Zac! rounding the Cape of Good Hope is indeed quite an accomplishment!!! looking forward to pics and your thoughts soon.

@Packers: As for this Kizzi charachter, I think he thinks he's doing his job.... generating gossip/news etc. I think the Perhams should re-think the direction this dude is going. The two 'boys' would probably love to swap stories, check each others boats out in admiration of each others quests... they are different, trying to accomplish different goals. Both are trying to sail around the globe safely, but they are both going about it differently and with a different type of boat and route! I wouldn't read too much into this Kizzi guy - he sounds and looks like a guy paid to stir things up!
Just my 2 cents!~

Well done Zac, and also to your family and friends, who have made your safe arrival in Cape Town possible.

I have been following your quest from the outset from here, in sunny Bedfordshire UK, and envy you really! what an amazing journey you have made thus far, and so early in your life too. You have shown yourself to be so mature in the ways in which you have encountered problems, and managed to get through them, with no time ever for feeling down, you have gotten through the good and the bad times, and this to me, shows that you are no ordinary boy!....you are one of those unique people, able to accept a challenge, and with a pretty good head on your shoulders too. I am an insignificant single human being, who has been watching in awe, what you have done, but what you have done is simply amazing.

You have my continued thoughts, prayers, and wishes for a safe journey back home, and I'll be keeping watch on your blog, rest assured!

Enjoy your stay in Cape Town, and do take care.
