A Very Meager Update

With the list of work the guys had and the media schedule that Zac had planned while in Grenada there has been little time for chatting. Laurence, Mike and Zac have worked non-stop sun up to sun down to get Intrepid ready for the trek home. The radar needed some wires welded (more info from Laurence later), parts were exchanged on the Monitor wind vane (thanks Hans) and the burnt out inverter was replaced. Loads of little things were attended to and Intrepid had a rousing test sail today with all on board in a nice 20 knot breeze. As it is when time to leave port, there was too much to do and too little time so though Intrepid is ready to go, Zac plans to head out in the morning. I'm sure in a day or two we shall hear the whole story from Laurence and Zac.

For those of you who enjoyed the news segment on Zac's trip that aired last week, there will be an update this Thursday at 8:00pm and Friday at 8:30pm on KCET's SoCal Connected program. If you are not local you can watch it online at www.kcet.org/socal. Last week's program is still on the site and will be until the end of the season. Again, if you like what you see, be sure to let KCET know.

We have received quite a few questions regarding Zac's return plans. Michael Broggie and Gary Calaroso from the Westlake Nautical Foundation are heading up the logistics. God willing, Zac will be returning to Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey sometime towards the end of June. Michael and Gary are working hard to ensure that things will go smoothly and that there will be ample opportunities for all who wish to come and welcome Zac home. More updates to come!

Also, please take the time to sign up for Zac's Newsletter. There are red star-shaped icons on the web site and the blog. It is a simple process. Enter your email address and follow the directions on your confirmation email. This will be one way Zac will be keeping people up to date on what he is doing and where he is going prior to his return and afterwards.

I'm afraid that is all for now. I would nag the boys for more information if I could but I am at the mercy of their schedules as well!

Cheers,

Marianne

Thanks Marianne. I have been praying for the Grenada team, knowing what a time crunch there would be and that the list would be long. It is still hard to believe that he is a few weeks from home. Wow, Zac. Incredibly amazing!!! Looking forward to the blow by blow.

KCET did a great job. Another great teaser for the book and whatever film comes our way.

thanks for the update Marianne.
I hope Zac gets plenty of rest before his next leg. At least he won't have to check the horizon every 20 minutes.
I guess you will beable to rest now that all is well with Zac and Intrepid.

hope you had a rest Zac!! or maybe you'll be resting up on the boat all alone finally... haha

it's really great your dad could be there!~

Jen Endey: Love you photo of Zac's dad watching Intrepid coming in!! plus the ones of Zac's arrival!! They are very clear and larger. I must admit the old fashioned developing is better, more real and makes me feel like I am there too instead of the coloring you add to the ones on today's blog - but that's just me...

Be safe thru Panama Zac! hopefully we can all catch a glimpse of you going thru the big gates!!

cheers from Fresno!!!

So it's business as usual for Laurence taking care of all those repairs. It's great to hear they are all working as a team.

Great news about the new KCET update this Thursday and Friday. I'll again tell all my friends to watch it.

Hi Zac.
Look's like once again you timed you departure just right. Just checked Ugrib and for the next 7 days you'll have a nice 15-20 knot wind from easterly directions. I am glad that the radar is back up and running cause you will encounter lots of traffic the closer you get to the ditch. Wish you a nice fast trip to the Canal.

Marianne,
Thanks for the update. Sounds like Grenada was a short but successful stop over.
Can't believe Zac will soon be home. It doesn't seem like it's been almost a year already.
My husband and I are planning on coming over to MDR to see Zac's sails come over the horizon. It'll be the perfect time to get out of the desert heat and enjoy some ocean breeze.
Stay safe Zac!

Marianne,

My class and I are still interested in learning if Zac will have a mailing address available to him in Panama. The students have made a nice card for him, if so. We will also be monitoring the live web cam at the Miraflores lock so tell Zac to be sure and wave at the camera.

We continue to pray for your family's well being and Zac's continued good fortune.

Sincerely,

God Bless You All!!! I continue to be amazed and in awe of Zac. I could not stop the tears while watching the video from the link posted several days ago. I have been following the blog since Zac left port last June. Now I'm getting to be an old man of 63 years of age and land locked in Utah but the courage and strength of character of this young man are to be admired!!!

Marianne,

Great news on such a quick stop!

As Zac nears Panama it is hard to believe that his trip can now be measured in weeks. When he gets into port someone needs to make sure that the sails on Intrepid are stowed away lest he slip out of the party and head out on another adventure. I know Zac will be anxious to see everyone so you probably don't have to worry about him waving then turning back out to sea. Of course, someone should probably keep an eye on Marianne so she doesn't sneak out of the party and onto Intrepid with a stick of dynamite.

They say that thru hiking the Appalachian trail changes a person and some hikers have a difficult time readjusting to normal routines. You know, Zac hasn't had to fight over a bathroom for a long time now.

Go get 'em Zac!

Hurray for more beautiful Jen Edney pics! Hurray for a marvelous (not meager!) Marianne (mum) update! Hurray for the guys working hard to get everything accomplish and Zac breezing on to the next leg today!

I finally did watch the KCET piece just yesterday and loved it -- it was so amazing to see the boat in the waves, the boom that broke, all that I've been reading about. Especially for someone like myself that has not been on a sailboat, much less alone in middle of a huge ocean! It really brought a whole new perspective to what Zac has been going through. Very inspiring, and I cannot wait for the next installment. I will definitely let KCET know how much I liked it, even though I'm not local.

Speaking of not being local, I most likely will not be there for the return festivities, although I would love to be. We've already spent the $ to take our family back to my husband's home country this summer -- a trip we've been wanting to do for several years (will be my children's first time there and also the first time many relatives get to meet them), and unfortunately could probably not afford to also make it out to CA from OK at the time Zac's expected (may even overlap with the trip). I'm very sorry I will miss being there in person, but know that Zac & the whole family & support crew are in my thoughts and prayers, and certainly will be on that wonderful day! I hope I'm able to watch it on national TV -- get Pinkston to work on that!

Peace, Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher

@ Steve B

LOL !!

I have been thinking about that as well. Poor Zac coming back home after all of this. I just see a 16/17 yo spreading their wings like this and then coming back home to the nest.

What made me laff was thinking that the only way Mom can keep him at home is if she buys Zac a water bed. No way he can sleep on solid ground for a lengthy period ever again :-)

Between Miss Jen's wonderful photography, Lady Marianne's info pack'd "short post" (y'all so have to write your own book on Capt Zac's circumnaviation - at least a few post-script chapters in his forthcoming book), the fantastic KCET Video-Doc and Capt Zac making landfall w/Lord Laurence & repair team - it has been an event filled week.

The comments still have a smile on me face - thx y'all.

Thank YOU Capt Zac! for being just who you are.

Happy Mums Day to all the Mothers in the ZacPac & most assuredly to our most blessed Lady Marianne.

HUGS!

Zac your experiences have brought back memories of when I set out with a friend to sail to Barbados. We never made it that far but did get to sail all the way from MDR to Manzanillo. and back. It only took us 7 months and there were lots of adventures along the way. This of course was when I was a much yougnger man of 30 years and now I am 67. But those adventures were an intregal part of my life as this will be with your life. You have accomplished things that others only dream of. My hat's off to you and may all of your fortunes be good, your winds be strong and your keel intact. Best of luck to you in your life, you are a true inspiration.

Anon,

Some very interesting questions. Thank you for asking them as I too was very courious as to what Laurence would have done differently.

As to 100x Sat phones with batteries, probably just one extra one with a net over the sink to keep the phones out of the dishwater would suffice.

Not sure if Zac was experimenting with making Sat Phone Soup as a delicacy or not, but it sure sounded like he really wanted to see how phones and sink water react.

Have a safe flight home Laurence and of course Zac, Godspeed to Panama.

My shears are all sharpened, oiled and waiting for you.
