The Last 100 Miles

Zac is busy dodging submarines off of San Diego this evening and preparing for his arrival on Thursday in Marina del Rey. He will give a final blog from the sea tomorrow. Don't worry though, he will continue blogging regularly so you can all see what happens after a young man sails around the world!
One of his goals of stopping in San Diego besides clearing Customs and not getting stuck in quarantine for 6 months, was to get his engine repaired so he has maneuverability in the harbor upon his return. Thanks to Werner, Klaus and the ultimate hero Jim Wilson for their tireless efforts there.
Zac was able to propel himself out of the harbor and out into his familiar So Cali Pacific. He will go where the wind blows and stop either in a local harbor or possibly in Catalina Island tomorrow for his last night at sea.
I know you don't come here to hear mom talk so here are some fabulous photos from Lisa Gizara. Thank you for your incredibly epic comments. They should be in a book of their own!

I know I'll miss the voice of Marianne, as the voyage concludes.

Really admire the way you've managed the blog. You've helped to create the community through your tolerance and good nature. (I still love the post that began something like: "God must have been mad at you Zac to have broke your bulkhead.") Some might have filtered that out, but it was instead welcomed as just another voice talking about the journey.

There's another kid sailing around the world that has just a small fraction of the community that Zac has acquired, and I think at least part of this was the frustration people felt when they took time to post a message and then found that it didn't get posted because for one reason or another it wasn't deemed sufficiently boosting or some such.

With everything else you've had to do in keeping your family up and running, you've always come through very nicely in filling us in when Zac was too busy, or didn't have the equipment up and running, to post his own updates.

So, as we prepare to cheer Zac for becoming the youngest solo circumnavigator -- and for his ever-standing record of forever being the FIRST 17-year-old to have completed a circumnavigation -- would like to say how much we've all enjoyed the calming and logical voice of his mother (along with the often poetic voice of his father).

Here's wishing all the best to the full Sunderland Family as you prepare to welcome home your son from his sail around the world.

If my testimony goes as quicly as it should, and the CHP is not patrolling the Santa Monica Freeway too dilegently, I may make it to chase you around the pier around 12:30 Zac, so keep those locks out of my reach.

Looking at the lower right corner of my screen I see that it is 2:17 AM so I am going back to sleep.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Zac, whether this old body is there or not, my admiration and respect for your accomplishments will be there.

Phenomenal photos!! I think that's the first time we've see Zac with a big smile :-)

Lots more brilliant photos here of Zac's return and stunning closeups of Intrepid. Under 'Zac's historic return':

http://gizaraarts.com/

- I think that's also the clearest shot of inside Intrepid. What a mess ! Has Zac been practicing for 16 years at home ROTFL :-)

- check out how rusty those pliers are. Pretty amazing more than a year at sea will destroy just about anything

- Interesting to see how big or how high it is inside Intrepid. Awesome standing room. Could just imagine if it were half the height and you had to live in a crawl space for a year

- Also somewhat surprised after all this time to see just how blue the paint is on the name Intrepid. That should be lighter blue. Completely different to what's been seen (and expected). Not that that matters.

- is that the USCG ticket under the flare gun?

Great photos. Captures and tells a bit of the story for the very first time.

Zac,

You do not know me, I am one of the many followers who found you story by accident (?) and have been glued to your website, blog, and news stories ever since, It is so exciting to follow your story and witness history in the making. I don’t know why, but I assume God has just put you on my heart for a particular reason – even if just to follow and pray. May he continue to bless you – in all your ways.

Lawrence and Marianne,

As a Parent, I am so happy to see parents who have obviously raised a young man with a strong sense of character, desire, and motivation to follow-their dreams. AND, as parents allowing him to act on those same dreams. In a society today where our youth are usually unmotivated, irresponsible, and just trying to make it through life, Zac and your family is a breath of fresh air… A hope for others! As I have tried to raise my own girls with these same principals, I will continue with the hope that one day they will navigate their own “oceans” with such fervor and knowledge.

I read an article where the final line quoted you Marianne "If [he died] it would be devastating, but you can't live life ruled by fear," This was very personal to me and I can 100% understand. A news article written on my daughter ended with me saying almost the identical phrase. She is an elite athlete who nearly died from Sudden Death due to an unknown heart defect. She is back at competing (after surgery to repair the defect)… And the knowing that we have done everything to allow for success and safety… and the trust in God… allows for extraordinary comfort in know that He is in control. You were right on with your statement!

I am on the east coast (Jacksonville Beach, FL) so will hope to get a glimpse via webcam… but either way, I will be cheering you on all the way.

Congrats again… and may you always feel HIS wind in your sails!

Zac and Family,

Can't believe this big day is finally arriving after following you from the time I saw that very first L.A. Times article as you whipped Intrepid into shape. It's been fun -- if a little nerve-wracking at times -- to follow you along and get to know a bit about what your whole family's about. albeit vicariously.

As an old guy, I can say I'm proud of the accomplishment(s) of ALL of you and those who took pictures, helped in repairs, provided food and lodging, etc., with a lot of prayer and support from a blog group that grew ever bigger.

I'm sure handling the aftermath of all this will be a challenge in itself that at times may rival some of the adventures of the journey, so I wish you well in that and will look forward to updates as the days roll ahead.

What now? Well, I always liked this quote from Frederick Buechner: "The place where God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

I hope to be able to say it to you in person eventually, but -- congratulations on an epic job!

First of all, we love hearing from you, Marianne! Secondly, I'm so glad to hear that the blog will continue after Zac returns. A wonderful online community has developed here and I hate to lose that.

Zac's trip has served to attract and unite people of all ages from around the world, waving and often times aiding Zac as he went around it. We shared, dreamed, and cheered one another along. Our opinions were all so unique and personal, and always heartfelt.

Sometimes we bickered and feuded, until put in our place, or removed from the "room." Just like a mom, Marianne would rein us back into shape with her diplomatic talents.

I am so greatful for the folks around the world who participated on the blog. I also want to thank those who welcomed Zac into your ports and aided him and watched over him. It also gave us great insights to your communities and customs.

There were also the other sailors Zac met along the way. Weather is was Saito, Mike P, or Natasza, or, Moana and the others, you provided Zac with the comraderie he needed along the way. All so important.

I just flashed on your DJ gig on St. Helena, the brai's in SA, the zipline in Costa, navigating the Panama Canal, hanging out with your new friend, Jed.

There is a saying that "the world is your oyster." You've just had the most amazing oyster of all!

Can't wait to see you in tomorrow!

Marianne, since we don't see you in any of the photos, are we to assume that you were not in San Diego? I'm guessing you might be alittle superstitious about seeing your son before he arrives in MDR? This is going to be some kind of a reunion.....pass the kleenex!

@Mouse - Thanks for the "shout out"!

@Laura - We'll talk about the photos of Jodi & I with the boom tomorrow! Oh, and I love the laptop story!!!

@Marilyn & Becky - Becky was right...I did mean "lonely"! But, you had a good point, I should have also put the word "lovely" in. As far as typing errors and which fingers go where, I type with only two fingers, so that's not the problem!

411 days down and...and only one more to go! I feel like a kid on Christmas eve!

Well done Team Sunderland! You are one awesome family!

Suggestion to Audrey @bandacorp.com.

Setup a flash (*.swf) webcaster in addition to the java, as backup or to run at the same time. There should be ample freeware out there or just "trial" the best available product for the day :-)

Also if there is an optional setting (in addition to the default), for "full screen" create a popup so one can watch in that mode as well.

Thanks your efforts :-)

At the same time, one must at least feel sorry for all the detractors and nay sayers - NOT!!!!

Where are their condescending (..he is still a child...) posts now?

I have been looking forward to watching his return tomorrow via the ZacCam, but as of this morning, it still won't load. Is someone going to video his return and post it somewhere, like on YouTube? I fear that even if the ZacCam is working by tomorrow, it will crash due to the shear numbers of Zac Packers who will want to witness this historic moment.

First of all, congratulations to Zac for a most amazing feat! You are an inspiration to so many people, I don't think you have any idea. From my office in a Boston high-rise, I have logged on every morning for over a year, to follow your adventure. I admire your courage, your faith, your perseverance, your ability to face difficult situations with a calmness and maturity far beyond your years. You have changed my thinking about my life and the way I view my two teenage daughters. Thank you for allowing us all to share in this incredible journey, to places I never knew existed before.

Thank you to Laurence and Marianne for sharing your family with us all. A year ago, you were complete strangers to me, and now I feel as though we're all family.

When I think about all that has happened in the past year, the financial meltdown, the presidential election, the Beijing Olympics, and so on, it's incredible that through this all, there was Zac bobbing in a little boat, on a big ocean, with people all over the world hanging on his every word.

I'm joyful that Zac has completed his journey, but like all the others, sad that it has come to an end. I too have now been following Mike, Natasza, and now Jessica (I love the pink boat!). Perhaps I'll read some of the Zacpac on other websites.

A few most memorable moments from the past year: the webcam on the Panama Canal, the broken boom in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and I think the blog that I will always remember...Zac's description of the night he fell asleep at the wheel, in the middle of a busy shipping lane (I forget where it was, South Africa maybe?), and he felt a touch on his shoulder to wake him just in time. I do believe that God has guided him on this journey and watched over him the whole way.

Enjoy the celebration! I wish I could be there in person, but I will most certainly be there in spirit, and on the webcam.

Love to all,
Nancy in Boston

How excited is Mom?

I think she was up at 5 or 6 am the other day posting comments.

Can't sleep? :-)

I think after Zac's final entry while at sea, it would also be nice to get a final entry from Mom, her thoughts, feelings, memories etc.

Need to complete the blog entries -- call it this chapter, neatly and nicely for all to see.

Too many people travel and keep interesting blogs, and when they get home, poof!!, there is no last entry and no one knows the end of the story.

So hopefully once Zac has Seamailed his last at sea entry, Mom can follow suit with her final one too.

Or can Zac grab WiFi where ever he may be and do it himself.

Doesn't matter. :-)

Two clean final entries from Mom and Son is all we need.

Thereafter, we can start a new chapter and continue to follow Zac wherever he plans to be.

McDonalds? Awesome, holding off for a proper in and out burger no doubt:

What was the problem this time with the Yanmar. Thanks to Jim Wilson obviously.

Hmmm... someone mentioned Volvo. What up with Yanmar and its repeated breakdowns at sea???

Audrey needs to update the software she is using. It is out of date, it requires and old(er) version of the java engine.

It's trivial along with installing shockwave webcasting software, just give her a nudge and if need be, we'll pony up 50 dollars or so for some up to date, real time software webcasting tv.

The issue should be sorted out by now. Can't leave these things too late otherwise they'll Yanmar you the b*tt :-)

Crying once again in the midwest -- tears of joy for you, Marianne, and all your family! Great photos! Thanks for sharing.

@ Bill Mann -- Use those sharpened scissors to cut a flying carpet and just get there if at all possible! We'll be spying on camera for you to chase Zac for a clipping and Toby and Ben for a hug!

@ All -- Best wishes for a great day tomorrow -- and always -- wherever you may be! CindyinCincy

Dear Zac: Welcome back to the United States of America. Just one more day and you will be home. As I write this note I am listening to you speak on NPR, my favorite source of news and information. You are doing a magnificent job of responding to all the questions. Wishing you a wonderful, happy, joyful welcoming home party. Look forward to continuing to read your blog. Take care and Godspeed. Media spotting (hearing?) - I just heard Zac on The Geo Quiz segment of The World. As soon as I heard the Magellan intro, I knew it was going to be about Zac. You sounded very cool-headed and together. Congratulations on your amazing achievement!

By the way, my 9yo laughs about the ESPN cover all the time. He's never seen one of the t-shirts that it's riffing on, but after I explained that he thought it was even more funny.

Hey Zac,

Congratulations! What a great trip, and thanks for sharing with all of us on-line. Any thoughts of being around the marina to greet well wishers on Saturday? Too bad I can't get out of work tomorrow.

Best to you,

Zac,
Many of us cashed in alot of chips with the Big Guy during your Great Adventure,Would it be too much to ask to drop down on bended knee when you finally depart Intrepid as a signal that you believed as much in Him as we did in you?
What a joy to see Him honored as you will be honored on that morning, after all,What seams like a long time ago,I asked you to not make Him your 1st mate............but let him steer!
He answered all of my requests.....and a few of your parents!
Thank you for helping me teach my grand sons about the value of being prepared, perseverance and grasping for the golden ring!
You truly give hope for our future!
Straight Wakes,
Mike S.
p.s. I'm the guy who gave a review on your poster such a long time ago!

We have been known as the generation that hasn't done anything!
You've proved we got it in us!
you've inspired us to "do hard things"
Just watch us!.....we'll make YOU proud!

Congratulations to Zac and his support crew--an amazing accomplishment that has changed you all in excellent ways.

Just also want to say that it's been neat to see how the family faith has helped this journey. Thanks for being honest about the times you've prayed or the times you felt God particularly present. I think faith like yours makes taking risks like this possible.

Congrats again, and welcome home!

Can it really be over a year? Is this adventure REALLY almost over? I've been here since two weeks before departure and I just can't believe the conclusion is here "so soon"... But I also can hardly believe that Zac hasn't seen his mom and siblings for over a year -- so much joy all in one place in 15 hours... Wish I were there to witness it, but I'm SO happy for the Sunderland family -- so much to be proud of -- you've all been an inspiration!

Way to go, Zac! I have been following your blog since last September, after reading an article in Blue Water Sailing magazine. I started sailing last summer after always wanting to learn.

I hope the final leg goes well. Hope to see a final blog once you get back. But I am sure you will be celebrating your return with your family!

Marianne, I enjoyed your posts as well. I don't know how you made it through. I am a parent myself to a 27 year old now, but it must have been nerve-racking waiting to hear from Zac every day.

Marianne,
As one mother to another, I can only imagine the thoughts that are racing through your head at the moment. Laurence has been great and I've thoroughly enjoyed both your posts along with Zac's. However, your mother's heart must be near the bursting point to finally have your boy back on home turf. It's been a very long time since you been able to wrap your arms of love around your amazing Zac. Enjoy the moment!

Zac, Not only are you the most awesome and amazing son but as you and we all know your parents are just as brave to let you find your dream. I've read your blog since day one and what a trip. I couldn't believe when I woke up and you went into Isla Navidad to wait out the storm. We have a ranchito neighboring the Grand Bay and I called my friends in Barra and at the marina to give you a welcoming.

I have goosebumps for your accomplishments and it's a good time to think what we have done to further ourselves or someone else in the last 13 months. You are my new Robin Graham as his story was always in my heart.

The best to you in your next adventure and always.

The KNX article says that you finished your high school education on board Intrepid. How does that work? Were you able to take a competancy test via email? Obviously high school standards are different in each state. Did you qualify for the CA standards upon graduation or another state? Just curious. Many kids your age are struggling to get their standards done. I am sure that they are curious how you did it.

Zac;
An incredible journey is coming to an end. My kids and I followed your trip from the beginning and it's been an inspiration to us all on turning dreams into reality. Everything starts with a first step and major congratulations are due to you and your family.
As a parent I recall my oldest daughter returning home after a 6 month study-abroad trip to Italy. The anticipation at the airport and seeing her after 6 months. I can't even imagine a entire year.
For your mom, all I can I say is her anticipation must be 10 fold what we felt.
Congratulations to you and your parents. You have made history.

Oh my where do I start but to say what a strong family you all are, and what true, strong, loving parents you have Zac. You're an awesome young man with lots of faith and courage to be out there alone for over a year fighting whatever came your way. You have inspired and changed the way I see my life and the ones around me which includes my 7 year old daughter reading the blogs with me. Congratulations on your return home and God Bless!!!
