The Last 100 Miles
Zac is busy dodging submarines off of San Diego this evening and preparing for his arrival on Thursday in Marina del Rey. He will give a final blog from the sea tomorrow. Don't worry though, he will continue blogging regularly so you can all see what happens after a young man sails around the world!
One of his goals of stopping in San Diego besides clearing Customs and not getting stuck in quarantine for 6 months, was to get his engine repaired so he has maneuverability in the harbor upon his return. Thanks to Werner, Klaus and the ultimate hero Jim Wilson for their tireless efforts there.
Zac was able to propel himself out of the harbor and out into his familiar So Cali Pacific. He will go where the wind blows and stop either in a local harbor or possibly in Catalina Island tomorrow for his last night at sea.
I know you don't come here to hear mom talk so here are some fabulous photos from Lisa Gizara. Thank you for your incredibly epic comments. They should be in a book of their own!

Back in the USA, well done Zac!
Now that you have done it we wait for your return to Cape Town, see ya soon!

I know I'll miss the voice of Marianne, as the voyage concludes.
Really admire the way you've managed the blog. You've helped to create the community through your tolerance and good nature. (I still love the post that began something like: "God must have been mad at you Zac to have broke your bulkhead.") Some might have filtered that out, but it was instead welcomed as just another voice talking about the journey.
There's another kid sailing around the world that has just a small fraction of the community that Zac has acquired, and I think at least part of this was the frustration people felt when they took time to post a message and then found that it didn't get posted because for one reason or another it wasn't deemed sufficiently boosting or some such.
With everything else you've had to do in keeping your family up and running, you've always come through very nicely in filling us in when Zac was too busy, or didn't have the equipment up and running, to post his own updates.
So, as we prepare to cheer Zac for becoming the youngest solo circumnavigator -- and for his ever-standing record of forever being the FIRST 17-year-old to have completed a circumnavigation -- would like to say how much we've all enjoyed the calming and logical voice of his mother (along with the often poetic voice of his father).
Here's wishing all the best to the full Sunderland Family as you prepare to welcome home your son from his sail around the world.
- Grant Fjermedal, Seattle
Oh boy...this is just incredible.
AWESOME even!
I am soooooooo happy for Zac and for you all. What great pics...thank you, thank you.
Great to hear that Zac will keep us informed of some of his goings on!
Can't wait for tomorrow...but guess we'll have to.

If my testimony goes as quicly as it should, and the CHP is not patrolling the Santa Monica Freeway too dilegently, I may make it to chase you around the pier around 12:30 Zac, so keep those locks out of my reach.
Looking at the lower right corner of my screen I see that it is 2:17 AM so I am going back to sleep.
Thanks everyone for the kind comments.
Zac, whether this old body is there or not, my admiration and respect for your accomplishments will be there.

Marianne are you kidding......WE LOVE HEARING FROM YOU!!!! :)Thanks for your words and the photos, enjoyed them both. I can imagine you are beyond waiting for Zac, and want him home NOW!
I was happy to hear that Zac will continue to write from time to time....cold turkey never worked for me!!!
Thinking of all of you, keeping you in prayer.

It is hard to believe the journey is coming to an end. Congratulations Zac on making the 360. Be careful! You just might have a thousand boats following you in.
Mom, you never have given us a time to regret your comments. You as parents have given us hope for what true parenting means.
God bless one and all.
Yours,

Any more updates to Zac's position?

Phenomenal photos!! I think that's the first time we've see Zac with a big smile :-)
Lots more brilliant photos here of Zac's return and stunning closeups of Intrepid. Under 'Zac's historic return':
http://gizaraarts.com/
- I think that's also the clearest shot of inside Intrepid. What a mess ! Has Zac been practicing for 16 years at home ROTFL :-)
- check out how rusty those pliers are. Pretty amazing more than a year at sea will destroy just about anything
- Interesting to see how big or how high it is inside Intrepid. Awesome standing room. Could just imagine if it were half the height and you had to live in a crawl space for a year
- Also somewhat surprised after all this time to see just how blue the paint is on the name Intrepid. That should be lighter blue. Completely different to what's been seen (and expected). Not that that matters.
- is that the USCG ticket under the flare gun?
Great photos. Captures and tells a bit of the story for the very first time.
The lump in my throat is getting bigger the closer we get to Thursday!!
Sail on Zac, sail home! I'm sure all of us wish we could all be there in MDR with open arms to welcome you home but will have to send you and the family hugs via webcam!!
Blessings
Terri
Oh No! We come here to hear your views also. Without you this could never of happened. I've been lurking here every day since June 14, 08, and check every morning on the latest. Just sorry that I can't be there for the Homecoming. What a guy Zac is.
Zac sure was lucky to have Jen around. Her photo documentation is priceless. Now that Zac is back, maybe he could start Twittering; I know I'd follow his daily adventures as he settles back into "normal" life.
Hey Zac
Been following you the whole time, but never posted. Congradulations on a epic adventure. You Not only pulled off an amazing feat, you did it with grace and style. You are a man that all can look up to reguardless of age or back ground. I am glad that I meet you thru your blog. Now I have to wash my/your T-shirt so I can wear it as I watch you return via cam. Thanks and best of everything in your future. Joe K NJ SAILMAN
Well Zac, my final blog recognizing the conclusion of your quest. Congratulations for an amazing accomplishment.
Remember God IS on your shoulder.

Ahoy Zac,
Can't wait!!!
So close now! Enjoy the homecoming, Zac. You have definitely earned it and given all of us a great thrill as we have followed your excellent adventure! Blessings now and always, Steve
So many things I want to say, but I'm not eloquence to convey my true feelings after following Zach all year long from the first day of his journey. So I'll just leave two words:
KICK ASS!
I've never met any of you, and won't be able to attend his homecoming, but I feel like I was that boat with him every day. I look forward to buying the documentary when it's available.
I have always enjoyed your comments....I have been following Zac since before he left MDR. I haven't posted much but I have enjoyed following Zac's amazing adventure. Zac is a role model for us all. I know that there will be more Zac adventures to follow in the future....Can't wait....

Zac,
You do not know me, I am one of the many followers who found you story by accident (?) and have been glued to your website, blog, and news stories ever since, It is so exciting to follow your story and witness history in the making. I don’t know why, but I assume God has just put you on my heart for a particular reason – even if just to follow and pray. May he continue to bless you – in all your ways.
Lawrence and Marianne,
As a Parent, I am so happy to see parents who have obviously raised a young man with a strong sense of character, desire, and motivation to follow-their dreams. AND, as parents allowing him to act on those same dreams. In a society today where our youth are usually unmotivated, irresponsible, and just trying to make it through life, Zac and your family is a breath of fresh air… A hope for others! As I have tried to raise my own girls with these same principals, I will continue with the hope that one day they will navigate their own “oceans” with such fervor and knowledge.
I read an article where the final line quoted you Marianne "If [he died] it would be devastating, but you can't live life ruled by fear," This was very personal to me and I can 100% understand. A news article written on my daughter ended with me saying almost the identical phrase. She is an elite athlete who nearly died from Sudden Death due to an unknown heart defect. She is back at competing (after surgery to repair the defect)… And the knowing that we have done everything to allow for success and safety… and the trust in God… allows for extraordinary comfort in know that He is in control. You were right on with your statement!
I am on the east coast (Jacksonville Beach, FL) so will hope to get a glimpse via webcam… but either way, I will be cheering you on all the way.
Congrats again… and may you always feel HIS wind in your sails!

Would someone please repost the link to the marina webcam? I can't seem to find it.
SO EXCITING!!
Welcome home Zac...All good things must come to an end....I really hate that phrase...
Carry on, keep us posted.
Kate
I agree with Grant Fjermedal!! The blog efforts have been amazing! I know it takes so much time and we love hearing from ALL of you!
Zac, I pray your last day/night at sea has some SWEET fellowship with your Lord and Savior, Jesus. I'm sure it is not hard to worship our Creator when you are sailing around in His creation. :-) "Even the wind and the waves obey Him..." and we are thankful for that!
Blessings!!!
So awesome to see that big smile!!! And how many feet did you grow out there.. your looking pretty tall capt.
I love the picture of the three off you.
Well only about 26 hrs left to go..your last night with Intrepid:/
I'm off to work till 3 then off to MDR!!
Laura
Can't seem to get the marina webcam to work. The Java symbol comes up but then nothing else happens????
HELP!
PLEASE.
Congratulations to you Zac and all you support individuals. I have been following your journey since you were off the coast of Australia. I have prayed for your success and safekeeping many times. We live in the desert east of San Diego and sail out of Harbor Island in San Diego so I feel like you have come to my home. What a great adventure you have been on and will begin as you enter the next journey of your life. Well done, Sandra Taylor
I teared up when I read today's blog. So many adventures, so many emotions, such an incredible family. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us over this past year. Sorry I can't be there tomorrow to celebrate the homecoming, but I'll be there in spirit!
God bless!
Terri McCartney from Mission Viejo
Marianne,
I agree with everyone else. We always enjoy your posts! I think Grant said it best "the calming and logical voice of his mother and the often poetic voice of his father", so true! Thank you both, Marianne & Laurence for sharing this past year with all of us.
@Bob in OKC, beautiful post about our wonderful country!
@Bill Mann, I sure hope you'll be there tomorrow. You've been such a big part of the Zac Pac family, and we're all looking forward to meeting you. Hope to see you tomorrow!

Way2Go Zac! God bless you man! I'll be watching the event on your Zac Marina Web cam (the link is on the Blog page, right below the donate" button everyone.Or type www.sailzac.com ). I should mention kudos to "Audrey" for her tireless efforts to coordinate a fast "fix" to problems bugging the system so we can all "be there" in cyberspace together. Thanks Audrey and crew!
I know I shouldn't be doing this, but immediately seeing it, it leapt out thanks to Jen's concept.
Literally night and day. In all respects:

Looking at the web cam, those are nice sized individual berths at the marina. Maybe Laurence and Toby can sneak down there early tomorrow and string a streamer or piece of string across the berth Zac intends to park in, with a little sign "finish line" or something. :-)
Zac and Family,
Can't believe this big day is finally arriving after following you from the time I saw that very first L.A. Times article as you whipped Intrepid into shape. It's been fun -- if a little nerve-wracking at times -- to follow you along and get to know a bit about what your whole family's about. albeit vicariously.
As an old guy, I can say I'm proud of the accomplishment(s) of ALL of you and those who took pictures, helped in repairs, provided food and lodging, etc., with a lot of prayer and support from a blog group that grew ever bigger.
I'm sure handling the aftermath of all this will be a challenge in itself that at times may rival some of the adventures of the journey, so I wish you well in that and will look forward to updates as the days roll ahead.
What now? Well, I always liked this quote from Frederick Buechner: "The place where God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."
I hope to be able to say it to you in person eventually, but -- congratulations on an epic job!

P.S. Zac, it was chill to see that NOTW hat in a few photos!
Hey! Wait a minute! How many times have we seen the comment from Bill Mann about cutting Zac's hair once he returns.
I think all the ZAC PAC folks should vote. My vote: LEAVE IT ALONE!
First of all, we love hearing from you, Marianne! Secondly, I'm so glad to hear that the blog will continue after Zac returns. A wonderful online community has developed here and I hate to lose that.
Zac's trip has served to attract and unite people of all ages from around the world, waving and often times aiding Zac as he went around it. We shared, dreamed, and cheered one another along. Our opinions were all so unique and personal, and always heartfelt.
Sometimes we bickered and feuded, until put in our place, or removed from the "room." Just like a mom, Marianne would rein us back into shape with her diplomatic talents.
I am so greatful for the folks around the world who participated on the blog. I also want to thank those who welcomed Zac into your ports and aided him and watched over him. It also gave us great insights to your communities and customs.
There were also the other sailors Zac met along the way. Weather is was Saito, Mike P, or Natasza, or, Moana and the others, you provided Zac with the comraderie he needed along the way. All so important.
I just flashed on your DJ gig on St. Helena, the brai's in SA, the zipline in Costa, navigating the Panama Canal, hanging out with your new friend, Jed.
There is a saying that "the world is your oyster." You've just had the most amazing oyster of all!
Can't wait to see you in tomorrow!
Welcome Home Zac!
I love Liz's photo of you with your stamped passport on the dock in San Diego! You have the look of a cool, calm, quiet, confident world-wide adventurer with the giddy enthusiasm of a "kid" just getting ready to bust out! I did it!!! I did it!!! I did it!!!
Marianne, since we don't see you in any of the photos, are we to assume that you were not in San Diego? I'm guessing you might be alittle superstitious about seeing your son before he arrives in MDR? This is going to be some kind of a reunion.....pass the kleenex!
@Mouse - Thanks for the "shout out"!
@Laura - We'll talk about the photos of Jodi & I with the boom tomorrow! Oh, and I love the laptop story!!!
@Marilyn & Becky - Becky was right...I did mean "lonely"! But, you had a good point, I should have also put the word "lovely" in. As far as typing errors and which fingers go where, I type with only two fingers, so that's not the problem!
411 days down and...and only one more to go! I feel like a kid on Christmas eve!
Well done Team Sunderland! You are one awesome family!
Enjoy your last night of "solitude" Zac, your life is about to change!
See you all tomorrow,
Terry

Oh my!!! I cant believe this wonderful adventure is coming to an end. But I'm glad to hear that Zac will continue to post to the blog. Congratulations Cap'n Zac on a job well done.
I get to work and my co worker says"hey Laura i just turned on my computer and Zac's on msnbc"
Dude your the man!!
25 hrs left to go!!
Laura
Oh dear... Webcam down again? Any ideas what's going on? Zac is almost home and we have no webcam. :(
Thanks -
Marie
Suggestion to Audrey @bandacorp.com.
Setup a flash (*.swf) webcaster in addition to the java, as backup or to run at the same time. There should be ample freeware out there or just "trial" the best available product for the day :-)
Also if there is an optional setting (in addition to the default), for "full screen" create a popup so one can watch in that mode as well.
Thanks your efforts :-)
Hey all you lucky folks that get to be there to welcome our friend Zac home, how about while down at the pier waiting for Zac to tie up to find the Webcam and wave at all of us who cannot make it to MDR???
That would be so cool!! And be sure to let Zac know he is being welcomed home from afar as well!!!
Bill Mann, you just gotta make it there tomorrow!!!
Terri
You rock Zac!
Enjoy the home stretch.
RK
Such an awesome feat and journey!
Right ON Zac!
Yikes!! I've had no problems viewing the dock from the Webcam every time I've clicked and gone there. But today, NO LUCK!! Is anyone else having trouble this morning? Which raises another issue--will the incredible number of people wanting to watch Zac arrive tomorrow via webcam cause it to crash???!!!
Awesome photos of you, Zac. Enjoy your last day and night at sea!! Like everyone else, I'm so glad you'll keep up the blog and let us know how "re-entry" is going and what you have planned next for us to follow!
--Sue McGah in Laguna Niguel, CA
Capt.Zac,
Maybe one of your Zac-pac could run you out a box of flags to fly to celebrate the completion of Zac's Great Adventure!
Would be great to see Intrepid sailing into MDR in a true nautical parade-style!
......my two cents worth :)
Straight Wakes!

Hey Zac...way to go!!! I'm gonna miss following your blog tho. It was an amazing adventure!!!!
Oh there was an article about you in the Billings Montana paper saying that you were back in US waters. I thought that was pretty cool. It also said that you might try to climb Mt. Everest....I say go for it!!!! After this trip, I'm sure that you could make it!!!!! To to bad I can't come to see you pull in, but congratulations and hope that you broke the record!!!!!
God Bless!!!

Welcome back to California, Zac. My family and I have been following you since before you left... Yanmar or Volvo ??? Now that you're almost back, one thinks the Volvo might have served you better! Thanks for all the exciting reads this last year. Not only your's, Zac, but Laurence's and Marianne's as well. I wish we could be there tomorrow, but we'll be watching on the web cam. Again, thanks for the great ride and congratulations for a job well done!!!

Hey Capt Zac,
Greetings and many congratulations on your awsome achievement. Not sure what I will do with no blog to read or postion to plot on Googel Earth, with the early morning coffee!
At the same time, one must at least feel sorry for all the detractors and nay sayers - NOT!!!!
Where are their condescending (..he is still a child...) posts now?
Any one remember Sandy? One of the most dogmatic of the early doom and gloom predictors. Perhaps some of them will have the grace to post humble apologies now, and admit how wrong they were.
Again my congratulations
DAN in Johannesburg South Africa.
I have been following Zac's blog and adventure from day one, and I am just awestruck by this young man's accomplishments, and he IS a man now, even though he is only 17.
I have been looking forward to watching his return tomorrow via the ZacCam, but as of this morning, it still won't load. Is someone going to video his return and post it somewhere, like on YouTube? I fear that even if the ZacCam is working by tomorrow, it will crash due to the shear numbers of Zac Packers who will want to witness this historic moment.
Zac, you and your family should be so proud of what you have accomplished in the past 13 months. I wish you a long lifetime of awesome adventures! Sail ON!!
Our family has been following your progress since we found out about your trip in God's World News last fall. We have really enjoyed reading about your trip and viewing the pictures. Thank you for letting us be a part. Glad you are almost home.
Caleb (9) and Noah (6)
Well done Zac, have been enjoying the Blogs for the last year keeping up with your adventure from the UK.
As the web cam still seem to not be working does anyone know if any of the American TV stations are going to be covering the arrival.... that can be seen over the web from the UK, but I am sure that if the webcam is not going to help us remote watchers that some video/photo's will be posted
Well done Zac, the record is nearly there.

Marianne,
I didn't want to forget to give A big thank you for all you have done Marianne. You gave so many of us the great pleasure of being updated day after day, even when you yourself had no idea about Zacs' safety. I wish you peace of mind and congratulations on your sons success sailing around the World. He could not have done it so well with out you. Marianne your a wonderful mother having given your son this great opportunity while you yourself have sacrificed so much. Peace be with you.
Hi Zac! Well, less than 24 hrs. to go and you will finally sail in to your home port. Cannot tell you how GOOD it was to see your glorious smile! Again, a picture is worth a thousand words... Three come to mind: "You did it!"
Enjoy this last night at sea. We will leave the porch light on to help guide you home.
Beautiful, beautiful pics today. Oh my goodness. May I order my "coffee table book" right now?
Marianne, I have always loved reading your posts --- I don't think there's any of us that have been disappointed when you've shared your thoughts and information! Thank you for keeping us "in the loop"! You MUST know how much we have come to really care about the entire Sunderland Family.
@Grant, Melanie, and Terry "the boom guy" --- I love to read your posts. You speak for many.
@Mary --- thank you for your beautiful post this morning. Welcome to the group!
It's great to hear that Zac will continue his blog after his homecoming. I agree, Anita, I never have been a big fan of cold turkey either! :)
ok --- off to see if the webcam is cooperating yet. There's going to be a very sad girlie in Longview, WA tomorrow morning if it is not working... :(
Until tomorrow everyone -
Blessings!

First of all, congratulations to Zac for a most amazing feat! You are an inspiration to so many people, I don't think you have any idea. From my office in a Boston high-rise, I have logged on every morning for over a year, to follow your adventure. I admire your courage, your faith, your perseverance, your ability to face difficult situations with a calmness and maturity far beyond your years. You have changed my thinking about my life and the way I view my two teenage daughters. Thank you for allowing us all to share in this incredible journey, to places I never knew existed before.
Thank you to Laurence and Marianne for sharing your family with us all. A year ago, you were complete strangers to me, and now I feel as though we're all family.
When I think about all that has happened in the past year, the financial meltdown, the presidential election, the Beijing Olympics, and so on, it's incredible that through this all, there was Zac bobbing in a little boat, on a big ocean, with people all over the world hanging on his every word.
I'm joyful that Zac has completed his journey, but like all the others, sad that it has come to an end. I too have now been following Mike, Natasza, and now Jessica (I love the pink boat!). Perhaps I'll read some of the Zacpac on other websites.
A few most memorable moments from the past year: the webcam on the Panama Canal, the broken boom in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and I think the blog that I will always remember...Zac's description of the night he fell asleep at the wheel, in the middle of a busy shipping lane (I forget where it was, South Africa maybe?), and he felt a touch on his shoulder to wake him just in time. I do believe that God has guided him on this journey and watched over him the whole way.
Enjoy the celebration! I wish I could be there in person, but I will most certainly be there in spirit, and on the webcam.
Love to all,
Nancy in Boston
Hmmm.....still having problems with the Webcam. Does anyone with Team Zac know if his arrival will be shown live by any TV stations (local or national)?
--Sue McGah, Laguna Niguel, CA
How excited is Mom?
I think she was up at 5 or 6 am the other day posting comments.
Can't sleep? :-)
I think after Zac's final entry while at sea, it would also be nice to get a final entry from Mom, her thoughts, feelings, memories etc.
Need to complete the blog entries -- call it this chapter, neatly and nicely for all to see.
Too many people travel and keep interesting blogs, and when they get home, poof!!, there is no last entry and no one knows the end of the story.
So hopefully once Zac has Seamailed his last at sea entry, Mom can follow suit with her final one too.
Or can Zac grab WiFi where ever he may be and do it himself.
Doesn't matter. :-)
Two clean final entries from Mom and Son is all we need.
Thereafter, we can start a new chapter and continue to follow Zac wherever he plans to be.
:-))
McDonalds? Awesome, holding off for a proper in and out burger no doubt:
http://vesselassistsandiego.com/2009/07/14/zac-sunderland-is-departing-san-diego-to-finish-his-sail-around-the-world/
What was the problem this time with the Yanmar. Thanks to Jim Wilson obviously.
Hmmm... someone mentioned Volvo. What up with Yanmar and its repeated breakdowns at sea???
Audrey needs to update the software she is using. It is out of date, it requires and old(er) version of the java engine.
It's trivial along with installing shockwave webcasting software, just give her a nudge and if need be, we'll pony up 50 dollars or so for some up to date, real time software webcasting tv.
The issue should be sorted out by now. Can't leave these things too late otherwise they'll Yanmar you the b*tt :-)
Crying once again in the midwest -- tears of joy for you, Marianne, and all your family! Great photos! Thanks for sharing.
@ Bill Mann -- Use those sharpened scissors to cut a flying carpet and just get there if at all possible! We'll be spying on camera for you to chase Zac for a clipping and Toby and Ben for a hug!
@ All -- Best wishes for a great day tomorrow -- and always -- wherever you may be! CindyinCincy
Zac ans the Team, I really, really, really wish that I could be there tomorrow to watch you come in. You can be so proud of yourself! WOW!!! Marc in Iowa
Kudos & Congrats Zac !!
You inspired me to row 4 miles in my kayak today... right around your entrance to MDR. The path is all clear for you!
For sure I will be there on the dock tomorrow to shake your hand.
Well done!
Dear Zac: Welcome back to the United States of America. Just one more day and you will be home. As I write this note I am listening to you speak on NPR, my favorite source of news and information. You are doing a magnificent job of responding to all the questions. Wishing you a wonderful, happy, joyful welcoming home party. Look forward to continuing to read your blog. Take care and Godspeed. Marjorie Forster, Baltimore, Maryland.
Media spotting (hearing?) - I just heard Zac on The Geo Quiz segment of The World. As soon as I heard the Magellan intro, I knew it was going to be about Zac. You sounded very cool-headed and together. Congratulations on your amazing achievement!
By the way, my 9yo laughs about the ESPN cover all the time. He's never seen one of the t-shirts that it's riffing on, but after I explained that he thought it was even more funny.

Zac,
Many of us cashed in alot of chips with the Big Guy during your Great Adventure,Would it be too much to ask to drop down on bended knee when you finally depart Intrepid as a signal that you believed as much in Him as we did in you?
What a joy to see Him honored as you will be honored on that morning, after all,What seams like a long time ago,I asked you to not make Him your 1st mate............but let him steer!
He answered all of my requests.....and a few of your parents!
Thank you for helping me teach my grand sons about the value of being prepared, perseverance and grasping for the golden ring!
You truly give hope for our future!
Straight Wakes,
Mike S.
p.s. I'm the guy who gave a review on your poster such a long time ago!
Zac,
You don't know me but thank you for all you've given us.
We have been known as the generation that hasn't done anything!
You've proved we got it in us!
you've inspired us to "do hard things"
Just watch us!.....we'll make YOU proud!

After the dust settles, and the celebration ends, I will post a more meaningful and thoughtful blog post, recounting Zac's journey from the perspective of Dave (and Skipper)...
Man, hard to believe, but a wonderful moment, I can see Zac offshore, tonight, all alone, his last night at sea, at the end of a long and amazing journey........
Amazing.....

Congratulations to Zac and his support crew--an amazing accomplishment that has changed you all in excellent ways.
Just also want to say that it's been neat to see how the family faith has helped this journey. Thanks for being honest about the times you've prayed or the times you felt God particularly present. I think faith like yours makes taking risks like this possible.
Congrats again, and welcome home!

Can it really be over a year? Is this adventure REALLY almost over? I've been here since two weeks before departure and I just can't believe the conclusion is here "so soon"... But I also can hardly believe that Zac hasn't seen his mom and siblings for over a year -- so much joy all in one place in 15 hours... Wish I were there to witness it, but I'm SO happy for the Sunderland family -- so much to be proud of -- you've all been an inspiration!
Whee hee im here!!
Great room over looking the marina..soo many sail boats coming in as i post..gotta go take some pictures..i will go look for the Zac cam later too..
this is great!!

haha did i say "sale" so excited.
Way to go, Zac! I have been following your blog since last September, after reading an article in Blue Water Sailing magazine. I started sailing last summer after always wanting to learn.
I hope the final leg goes well. Hope to see a final blog once you get back. But I am sure you will be celebrating your return with your family!
Marianne, I enjoyed your posts as well. I don't know how you made it through. I am a parent myself to a 27 year old now, but it must have been nerve-racking waiting to hear from Zac every day.

Marianne,
As one mother to another, I can only imagine the thoughts that are racing through your head at the moment. Laurence has been great and I've thoroughly enjoyed both your posts along with Zac's. However, your mother's heart must be near the bursting point to finally have your boy back on home turf. It's been a very long time since you been able to wrap your arms of love around your amazing Zac. Enjoy the moment!
hey zac, i just wanted to say congratulations for accomplishing something so amazing. i really admire you for getting out there and seeing the world, something ive only hoped to do when im older. ive been following along with your blog since the beginning, and its been so cool to see someone my age do something so incredible. thanks for letting all of us follow you on this journey and for doing something to actually give teenagers a better name :)
@Laura - Welcome to MDR! Oh, please enjoy "all the doin's" for those of us that will be watching via the webcam. Will be looking forward to your post tomorrow!
Give Zac a hug for us ---

Zac, Not only are you the most awesome and amazing son but as you and we all know your parents are just as brave to let you find your dream. I've read your blog since day one and what a trip. I couldn't believe when I woke up and you went into Isla Navidad to wait out the storm. We have a ranchito neighboring the Grand Bay and I called my friends in Barra and at the marina to give you a welcoming.
I have goosebumps for your accomplishments and it's a good time to think what we have done to further ourselves or someone else in the last 13 months. You are my new Robin Graham as his story was always in my heart.
The best to you in your next adventure and always.
Help me can not see the camera! What is the secret?? Please do not want to miss Zac's return
The KNX article says that you finished your high school education on board Intrepid. How does that work? Were you able to take a competancy test via email? Obviously high school standards are different in each state. Did you qualify for the CA standards upon graduation or another state? Just curious. Many kids your age are struggling to get their standards done. I am sure that they are curious how you did it.
I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight!
@ Marie- Thanks so much.
The coffee's ready, the camera is ready, the car has gas, and I'm ready to go!
Zac's comin' home in the morning!!!!
Woo Hoo!
@ Laura
Please be there at MDR on my behalf too!
Say 'hi' to Zac and family from UK friend.
I so wish I could be there.
Will be trying to watch this evening, on the webcam but so far after and initial ability to see ...there is nothing....the Java logo is just going round and round! SOS.........
Anyone know what to do???
Hopefully meet everyone on the blog later... when Zac's boat comes in..........Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
What a wonderful day. PTL.

Congratulations Zac!
You did it!! What a fantastic accomplishment for you and your family. And what special memories you will always have and share with those around you as well as to those that will follow you.
I've watched your adventure throughout the voyage and I will be there tomorrow to welcome you into the harbor. I'm really excited to share in the celebration!
All the best to you in the future - so many more adventures ahead.
Much admiration,
Jeff Haring
Zac, thousand words are not enough for your superb achievements and all fantastic experiences.
Congrats from thousand of islands : Indonesia. And please be informed, there are no pirates in here only fishermen, poor fishermen.
May God Bless you and family for always.
@ Laura
Wonder if you could hold up a sign with LAURA written on it so we can see you there?
That would be fun.
Maybe it will be too chaotic....who knows....Yeh...HAPPY HAPPY DAY.

Zac;
An incredible journey is coming to an end. My kids and I followed your trip from the beginning and it's been an inspiration to us all on turning dreams into reality. Everything starts with a first step and major congratulations are due to you and your family.
As a parent I recall my oldest daughter returning home after a 6 month study-abroad trip to Italy. The anticipation at the airport and seeing her after 6 months. I can't even imagine a entire year.
For your mom, all I can I say is her anticipation must be 10 fold what we felt.
Congratulations to you and your parents. You have made history.

Oh my where do I start but to say what a strong family you all are, and what true, strong, loving parents you have Zac. You're an awesome young man with lots of faith and courage to be out there alone for over a year fighting whatever came your way. You have inspired and changed the way I see my life and the ones around me which includes my 7 year old daughter reading the blogs with me. Congratulations on your return home and God Bless!!!
See ya on TV,
Michelle and Alina in Tennessee
Oh my gosh!! I watched your entrance to MDR from the webcam at UCLA aquatic center and got to at least watch Zac's welcoming party sail past. What an awesome welcome home for our ZAC!!
Welcome Home!! We are all so proud of you!!

Oh Zac looks so bored and that hair...he keeps pushing it out of his face and it looks dirty. I can see that he would rather be anywhere than where he is now.
we prayed for you zac!
Why hasn't this kid been on CNN yet?
He should get to meet Obama, this is spectacular!
Does he get some kind of prize money for breaking the record?
