Life on Land

Sorry about the lack of blogging lately. Not a whole lot going on that compares to sailing alone around the world. Here is what has been going on for the last couple weeks....

I went to New York two weeks ago to speak at the Adventures in Travel Expo. It was a great time meeting and listening to other adventurers. It looks like I will be speaking at another of their Expos in Chicago on January 9-10th. More updates when it gets closer.

While I was in NYC I met with the guy who has been helping me write my book, Rob Buchanan. He is a great guy and we have been going over the trip and putting together what will be a great look at the trip from my perspective with a little from the family as well.

The night before I left to come back home I went to a New York party with my literary agent, David Kuhn, and met and hung out with Madonna and her crew for a while. Pretty amazing!

Back in Cali, I'm getting back in shape doing some intense training to get ready for whatever the next adventure might be. A personal goal of mine is to go for Everest but I am also looking into something new that hasn't been done yet. I have been invited to come to the Los Angeles Adventurers Club so am hoping to meet some of the amazing people there.

I've been meetimg with a lot of production teams out here looking into any television possibilities. I have had some criticism for earning money from adventuring. I don't see the problem earning money doing what I love if it is at all possible. As I have always said, I am not opposed to going to college for a purpose - not for the sake of going. Lot of people take a gap year and that is my plan. I have been hitting the books here finishing up my last few requirements for high school graduation.

Today, my sister, Abby, and I appeared at a mall in Culver City at their grand reopening. Tomorrow, my family and I will be at the LA Cancer Challenge on the VA Grounds in West LA doing a fundraiser for the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. My grandfather, who was a fit and active guy, died 3 years ago totally unexpectedly from Pancreatic Cancer. There is no known cure for it at this point. Feel free to come on out and support the cause if you are in the LA area.

Regarding the documentary DVD...we will be sending out an update to everyone who pre-purchased the DVD informing you all of what has been going on and our different options at this point. If you don't receive an email by Wednesday of next week, please contact us at marianne@zacsunderland.com.

Sorry once again for the lack of blogging. I'll be updating this once a week from now on for sure so be sure to check back.

Cheers,
Zac

Sounds like Zac misses the ocean, and there are likely a lot of folks who followed his trip who are also missing reports from the ocean.

For those who want to follow another solo circumnavigation, Jessica Watson is 8 days into her attempt to do a nonstop trip around the 3 Great Capes.

She's been blogging daily and getting from 200 to 500 comments a day -- so it looks like she's really caught the imagination of a lot of folks.

Her blog is at: www.jessicawatson.com.au

Don't apologize for doing what you feel is the right thing. Adventurers have been earning a living from their adventures for 100's of years. No reason you shouldn't. And colleges will still be there if you decide to go - whether it is 5 years from now or 20 years from now.
I promise you - you learn more doing than in listening to someone talk about it.

Hey Zac, great to hear from you! Everything you are doing sounds so exciting, even if it's all on land. Meeting Madonna??! Guess you know how to roll now!

We're dying to know what new adventure that's never been done before that you might be considering. It's probably too early to give us any hints. Even if it doesn't work out, tell us what it was going to be. I do think at some point, after proper training and prep, you should go for Everest, but that could be done at any time--even into your 60's. For now, I hope you can find something exciting and unusual since it sounds like you could use another adrenaline rush.

Glad you'll be updating us each week. Our family is also following Abby's and Jessica Watson's blogs, but I'll definitely be checking back here every day to see what's up with our original adventurer--Zac!

Hi all,
Just for fun today I looked back in the blogs to this date a year ago to see what was going on and it sure brought back memories. Zac you were in the Indian Ocean and we here at home were holding our breath that the splinted together boom would hold until your dad could bring the new one to you. I had missed the new boom signing party where many of the Zac Pack met each other (a major regret today).
What really struck me about looking back was that how much bad happen later on that you handled. The headstay failure, the rough wave in the Atlantic that knocked out the electronics, and the hurricanes in the Pacific. Also all the good things like the many new friends you made and the great places you saw. Life is like that. You can't see ahead but you can look back in the wake and see the wonder of it all. The good, the bad, and the pure adventure of it. You are an adventurer. We all are really --just on different coure headings.

Zack:

Hope you find a good next adventure and that you make plenty of money with your efforts.

Cali is a city in Colombia.
One with you knowledge of the earth should know this.

Zac-
Yep---no need to explain your college goals.....you are exactely right----taking a year or so to "re-group" is the thing to do---if it feels right to you. Good luck in whatever endeavor you choose.

Hey Zac
Have you ever heard of James Holman? He was the supposedly the first person (well westerner) to explore and travel the world solo (not commissioned by a government or with an army), just for the love of adventure. He was a sailor, and a writer, and more impressively he was blind. Traveled the world extensively before the invention of cars, planes or any motorized vehicles. Check out a book called "A Sense of the World" by Jason Roberts... it gave me adventure ideas and encouragement reading about this guy.
Good luck

DUDE! What's the problem with the video???

Could smell it a mile away even when you woz on the seas. :-)

Should have given it all to that PBS SoCal peeps who did the awesomest video interview of you while under sail. Their editing team were awesome.

Someone stealing your vids or hijacking them or what?

Need to make a move before people become bored and lose interest.

Just burn the hundreds of hours of raw footage to Dvd and send it everyone's way.

That would be more appreciated than anything else.

Kinda like a raw log vs. a polished and edited book.

No one done that yet, burn the raw footage in sequence and show that, that would be a simple first if you do that, instead of pruning, cutting editing, make it nice and pretty sweet and scary, when the raw real deal is the best you can do and give.

I agree, don't listen to the nay-sayers giving you grief about earning a living from adventuring. You have a level head on your shoulders and will make the best decisions for Zac.

How about this for an adventure. "IF" global warming opens up the northern passage during the summer, why not be the first to sail from the Pacific to the Atlantic via the Artic Ocean.

Thanks for the update Zac. As for earning a living being an adventurer, if you have a product or service people are willing to pay for, it's an honest respectful living. Plus your doing what you love. Sounds like a dream come true to me.

Are you envious that Jessica is on the sea and you are on land? Don't you wish you were back out there having a huge adventure again? Are you finding life boring being at home? I am following Jessica as I just cannot believe she is doing her trip unassisted and no stops. That just seems unreal. I bet you are with her in mind.

Start your Sailing Business, yes the one that you mentioned to me while in East London, South Africa.

Plenty of people will gladly pay some dollars for a daytrip with you.

do it while the iron is hot ! Make money while you can, you will need plenty for your next adventure or for current needs..
