More Photos

Spoke with Zac several times today. His email wasn't working until later this afternoon so I (mom) will sum up his first day.

Spent the day restowing and organizing my gear. It was really frustrating not being able to find things that I needed including the power cable for my Pactor III modem. This modem allows me to send and receive email through the Single Side Band radio. It was on the chart desk on Friday night after having been removed for seatrials. I thought the camera guys took it when they took their gear off the boat. I eventually found it in a bag of electrical things that had been stowed behind the salon settee or livingroom couch in boat-talk. Sweet success! Have checked email and weather and all is well.
On a positive note, all power and charging has been amazingly good. I am running my fridge, computers, radio and charging Sat phone and ipods and have more than enough power. Thanks again Mike!! My power is being generated entirely by solar panels and a wind generator so this is really good news. Have had some trouble with the self steering wind vane. Not sure if it is just me??? Will press on with this.

Mom here...we are still having long days and nights here tying up loose ends with the boat show and many emails which I am forwarding to Zac in small bundles. His Sailmail email account can't handle large volumes of mail so it has to go through his land based mail for now. Laurence (dad) is leaving tomorrow on a yacht delivery and will be missing his first mate. Not to worry, he has a replacement! Zac's sister Abby (14) has been wanting to be the youngest girl to sail around the word for about 3 years now! She will accompany Laurence up the coast to San Francisco and back down again in a different boat.

Thanks for checking in. Will post again soon.

Cheers,
Marianne for Zac

PS We though it would be fun if people would email questions they had about Zac, his boat and his trip. If you have a question, email it to zacsworldadventure@yahoo.com and he will endeavor to answer a few everyday!

It's great that even in the middle of the ocean, Zac will still have the normal energy-based perks of life around. I was wondering for a bit where all that juice was coming from. Nice that it's all self-supplied.

Best of luck, Zac!

It begins! I just saw an article about you and your trip, and coincidentally, have been reading a ton of personal accounts about circumnavigating. I read Dove a million years ago, and still have the dream to sail and live aboard. Safety first! (the excitement will come of it's own accord!). All the best, Craig L.

Hey Zac,

I love to sail, I started 2 years ago and I'm 11 years old. Your boat is sooooo cool, I sail an Opti. My dad sailed since he is a boy. I think you are so brave to go out on this voyage, I think I would be afraid. I really look up to you and I hope you are okay. I will say prayers for you and I will keep checking in on you.

I'm impressed with your effort, Zac, but a little concerned that you are already having trouble locating items you need. You should have been the one to stow everything while keeping a list. Nobody should have been on the boat once you were ready to stow so as to avoid damage or misplaced items.

Zac,

Great to hear that you have power for everything and that you found your modem. I wished you a safe journey on your day out and will be following you from distant Kyiv, Ukraine.

I have friends here who are trying to set out on a similar adventure but the bureaucracy keeps getting in the way. They have reconstructed a ancient sailing ship, called a Chajka used by the Ukrainian Cossacks in their battles with the Turks on the Black Sea during the 16th and 17th centuries. This is their second replica from this period and the ship's name is Spas.

These friends plan on sailing their ship from Ukraine, though the Bosporus Straits, through the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and up to NYC.

While you probably won't have the time, I am sending you their site and primarily the photo's section, as you and others may be hampered by the Ukrainian language. I have e-mailed them about your adventure and I hope that one of their crew will take the time to wish you well, as they too are adventurers.

Hi,

I created your article bio on Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zac_Sunderland

Zac Sunderland is a Southern California yachtsman, who aimed to break the record made by David Dicks, who was made famous for becoming the youngest person to sail non-stop and solo around the world. On June 14, 2008 at the age of 16, Zac, of Thousand Oaks, California, sailed from Marina Del Rey in his 36-foot (11-metre) sailboat "Intrepid" to circumnavigate the world.[1] read more

As a retired sailor I am looking forward to following you 'round the horn and beyond.
As for stowing something and not being able to find it... I once personally brought onto my boat a case of Vienna Sausage (of all things!) and never found it again... 20,000 nautical miles and 4 years later we never could figure out what happened to it. You will always have something that you can not find when you need it!

Zac it's cool and great that you have a dream like this and that you are able to make it come true. I wish you good luck, really I mean, I even admire the fact that you want to do it already at the age of 16. I might follow your footsteps cause my dream is to sail around the world, on the sailing boat or ship of my family. I have done races so far and came second place out of 15 places. I will e-mail you soon that's a promise. (MAY THE EARTH WELCOME YOU WITH IT'S WARM HEART.) Just kiddin'.
