Just a quick update to let you all know that Zac is in port and all is well. He arrived with no difficulty and was met in the bay by the National Coast Guard who generously offered their assistance. The wind was calm so the genoa did not present any problems. Zac went into to town after clearing customs with one of the customs workers who was taking a break. He rode on the back of his motorcycle to pick up a few provisions and a hot dinner from a local restaurant. We relayed with Laurence in England to see if there is anything that Zac needed. They look forward to catching up in a few days in Port Louis.
A big thank you to the Rodrigues Island Tourism Board, Customs and Coast Guard for their kind offers of help and awesome hospitality!
I'll update again this evening which will be Zac's morning.

Great news! I saw Rodriguez Island on Google Earth (for some reason, it called Gambrani Island there) and thought, that if things get worse, Zac can make a stopover there. Of course, it is a pity that he had to do this, but on the other hand it is never bad to make new friends and see new land. I hope Zac finds everything he needs on Rodiguez Island, has a good time there, and is quick on his way to Mauritius and his father.

All of these interactions with the different people he is meeting in these far away places makes for a great cultural anthropology/sociology assisgnment. It would certainly make for a great read!

I checked out the island on google earth - found the most beautiful resort - NE corner - Cotton Bay resort - aahhhhh.... Too bad Zac can't hitch a motocycle ride there for a nights rest!! lol!

What great news. Hopefully all the repairs go well. It's great to know people are willing to help even if Zac didn't make any plans on docking at this Island.

The sea was rugged, and the _Spray_ washed heavily when hauled on thewind, which course I took for the island of Rodriguez, and which
brought the sea abeam. The true course for the island was west by south, one quarter south, and the distance was nineteen hundred miles;but I steered considerably to the windward of that to allow for the heave of the sea and other leeward effects.....
........Being sure of the sloop's position, I lay down to rest and to think, and I felt better for it. By daylight the island was abeam, about three miles away. It wore a hard, weather-beaten appearance there, all alone, far out in the Indian Ocean, like land adrift. The windward side was uninviting, but there was a good port to leeward, and I hauled in now close on the wind for that. A pilot came out to take me into the inner harbor, which was reached through a narrow channel among coral reefs.
I have a big grin on my face at the thought of a hot meal... and the motorcycle ride sounds cool. Good to hear all's well.
Good to hear it pulled in early to take care of that trying situation, and get a good hot meal that he didn't have to make.

Not sure if this'll make the post for others to read before Capt Zac's update via Lady Marianne, but is worth a shot.
Have been praying off & on all day. Even w/the "calm" seas, w/weak rigging, sailing into harbor sounded very tasking on our dear Capt's skills & his beloved Intrepid.
I have Capt Zac's poster on me cube wall & would at times, just touch it, say a quick, "Heavenly Father, please protect Zac Sunderland & comfort his family, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."
I won't go into me own w*rk trials/tribulations as I think we all need to focus on Capt Zac & pray he's able to secure/repair the rigging, give his beloved Intrepid a good once over before sailing onto meet Lord Laurence, whom I'm quite sure will assist Capt Zac in inspecting her millimeter by millimeter, inside & out.
Enjoy the respit Capt. You most deservedly need it. Take your time & be Thorough, yet enjoy the beauty He created around you in your spare hours.

I don't remember who originally said this, and I'll probably mangle the quote anyway, but "The best battle plan is worthless once the first arrow flies."
The ability to make a thoughtful, well prepared plan shows great wisdom. The ability to modify that plan when necessary shows even greater wisdom. How many grandparents still have that lesson to learn?
@Zac- Sailing alone around the world is one thing, but be careful of riding motorcycles. Those things are dangerous!

What a difference a day can make indeed; especially in Zac's world. Zac, you get more done in a day than I get done in a week by far!
I recall reading in 'Sailing Alone,' what wonderful hospitality Joshua Slocum was shown on Rodriguez Island. It sounds as though the Island folk are still as hospitable and kind as they were one hundred and thirty two years ago!
I hope you get to meet one of those giant turtles while you are there! It will be a short stay; yet a great chapter that will hold many good memories for you as well I hope.

Actually I live in Rodrigues and work in a granary on the quay and what a pity that just when zac arrived I was transferred in the office and missed the chance of seing him. I'm so sad
