The Miraflores Locks
Hello All,
I spoke with the boys this morning and all was well. They were indeed delayed last night entering the Gatun Locks. They anchored in Lake Gatun for what was left of the night and were up early this morning making their way with their pilot, Fernando, towards the next locks. First should be the Pedro Miguel Lock - a single lock. Next will be the Miraflores Locks (a set of three) which have an excellent web cam at the following link:
http://www.pancanal.com/eng/photo/camera-java.html
The estimated time of arrival at Pedro Miguel is 9:00amPDT/12:00EDT 1600Z.
Not much warning, I know. Zac didn't expect to be passing through so quickly this morning.
I don't think we will have the problems seeing Intrepid like we had last night - the web cams at Miraflores are very clear. We will be meeting on the blog comments (at the end of this blog post) if you care to join us. You don't need to have a Google account - you can post anonymously and then sign your name at the end of your post.
Take Care & Enjoy!

Miraflores Locks is two miles from Pedro Miguel. Do you mean they are going through Pedro Miguel right now (in about 30 minutes) and then straight through to Miraflores Locks and through them, or will they have to hang around for several hours before going through Miraflores Locks??
Good questions! They should be approaching Pedro Miguel Lock soon and then expect about 30 minutes (not certain) until Miraflores Locks. Could there be a delay? You bet!
Marianne
it is looking very quiet at Miraflores lock, but the time on the screen says 10.39am Have we missed them? J
Does the Miraflores Locks camera face east or west?
which angle is everyone looking at, there are three. J
Oh the camera pans round all the time, that could be frustrating. J
Are Laurence & Jen going to be on the observation deck?
I am looking at the hi-res webcam and it doesn't appear to be changing. Also doesn't have the redline indicator of update that I can see.
CAMERA ANGLES
On the Camera at Centennial Bridge, Intrepid will coming onto the screen from the bottom right, as Zac exits Pedro Miguel.
After that, on the Camera at Miraflores, Intrepid will be coming towards the camera.
Hope this helps...
Papajock
I should have said that on the Miraflores Hi-Res, Intrepid will be coming towards the camera.
Papajock
Oops! Now the redline IS showing on the hi-res camera! duh!
If you can see the big bridge in the background, then you are looking to the North.
Andy
Louanne, hey, I work with fabric too, landscapes. I don't think the high res camera is in real time. Not sure. I am looking at the regular one with a red ship just headed out with tug. J
Thx PapaJock!
I am in Maryland, have been watching Zac's journey since before he reached Australia. We are excited about the possibility of seeing him go thru the locks today.
It is nearly noon here, EST.
does anyone know if we have missed them or what time (I am on mountain time) they will go through? J
What's the plan after this final lock? Is Zac going to pull over somewhere and say his goodbyes, or head straight out to the Pacific. If this final lock take's all of the next two hours only, got some good day light hours left to navigate the rest of the canal, the gulf of panama and finally 'turn right' and head on up home.
the Hi Res Miraflores is facing east, Zac should be coming towards the cam and go through the lock on the left i think, it seems to be updating itself but the clock is wrong, are they in a different time zone??
Rock On Zac
CAMERA ANGLE
Looks like they've changed the angle on the Centennial Bridge camera. We can now see the Pedro Miguel lock. Intrepid will be coming from the right side of the screen...
Papajock
Click the 'view in a popup' for the hi-res Miraflores Locks, its full screen and totally awesome. You can almost stick your hand in the water :-)
dammit I have lost the web cam, it won't load, I want to cry.
The date and time is at the top left of the screen. If you are viewing in the pop up, you need to scroll up and down a bit. The picture seems to be 5 minutes delayed from real time, but the refresh rate (update of the picture) appears to be every 1 minute.
For Miraflores or Centennial Bridge?
Did I miss him coming thru Pedro Miguel?
At the moment, the canal traffic appears to all be heading north/east/Atlantic-bound. From watching these cams regularly over many months, I am nearly certain that 1) traffic only moves one direction at a time (for several hours), and 2 moves directly from Pedro Miguel to Miraflores. North of PM (where Zac will be coming *from* is the narrow Gaillard cut. The Centennial Bridge and Expansion Program cams often show the south/west/Pacific end of this cut and would show Zac passing under the bridge.
As I write, the Centennial Bridge cam is showing a closeup of the Pedro Miguel lock. This, as well as the Miraflores cam, would show Zac well.
- Doulos
Zac should pass from the Centennial Bridge then on to the Pedro Miguel Lock. He should be somewhere in that area now. There is a map of the canal on his blog a few days ago. It shows the route well.
Marianne
there he is!!!
Or is that Intrepid in the Pedro Miguel lock now!?
I'm looking at the high-res camera. As has een mentioned, it's in the Central time zone. The big red boat in the center doesn't appear to be moving (making me first think the camera wasn't updating), but other things are. What fun!
p.s. thanks to whomever posted that animated gif version of the other lock passage - very helpful.
Sailboats in Centennial Bridge view right now, not Intrepid though
I'm glad I saw the note to look at Centennial Bridge - I got to see his boat. How cool is that!
The miraflores high res is a view northwest. The Pedro miguel lock and the bridge is in the background respectively.
~B mac
Was that him next to another boat that just passed through?
5:10pm UK time....so 11:10am PDT time...have i missed Zac?
Please say no!

Okay, so now Intrepid's past Pedro Miguel. That was quick!
It's time to watch the Miraflores Hi-Res. No more than 20 minutes.
Papajock
So a half hour 'til Miraflores? Back to w*rk 'til then :)
20 mins - time for a quick break.
This is just sooo cool!
I am looking at the Puente Centenario cam and all I see is a fast tug then it changes to a bridge but no sign of Intrepid.
Looks like two sailboats about to go under the bridge
now (12:18 eastern) the camera is looking toward the bridge and showing a sailboat in the canal (not the lock) - now an even closer shot - is that Zac? (sorry, poor boat recognition skills here!) If so, how totally cool!
It appears that someone is panning the Centennial Bridge cam, like they are looking for something/someone. Presumably the camera operator will not know Intrepid, only that someone is interested in seeing a "sailboat" make the transit. Keep watching, and hopefully someone who knows Intrepid will confirm Zac's passage.
Marianne, do you know if Zac is still traveling in company with the cat?
there they are two boats in a lock, probably miguel
Totally cool! I feel as if I actually sailed thru the canal with him. This technology is awesome. Thanks for allowing me to go along for the ride. I am blown away!
CAMERA ANGLE
Centennial Bridge camera is now back to the original angle. Intrepid may be visible leaving the lock, coming from the right side of the screen. Still about 20 minutes up to Miraflores...
Papajock
a cat?? did i miss a day? when did he get a cat ???
Sorry, but hard to keep track of the Centennial Bridge camera. They keep moving it...
At least the Miraflores Hi-Res stays fixed.
Papajock
LOL J - Catamaran :)
I think we will know where we are when the red tanker about to go under the bridge starts to show up on the Miraflores cam.
cant get picture up of Miroflores...had it then changed to high res and now wont come up...aggggg!
UK friend
I don't know if he is still with the cat. I don't think either of the 2 sailboats that passed through earlier were Zac. Hmmmmm...
Marianne
Sorry J, a catamaran, not a meow cat. lol He went through the locks last night along with a cat (catamaran) and I wondered if he was still traveling along with them.
I couldn't bring the hi res up on my computer, so DH did it on his, so I am dashing around like a fool from room to room. If that was him with another sail boat in Miguel, then he will have already gone past the Centenial bridge surely. Look at the map on Zacs blog. Miguel lock is between the bridge and Miraflores. Correct me if I am wrong. J
Sure looked like a smaller shipped side tied to a larger cat - timing would've been right.
Great resolution today! Can't wait!
well i took some screen shots of whatever sailboat passed by a few minutes ago...
oh my Tomi LOL me too
sorry
does the high resolution Miraflores screen refresh on its own and if so how often? Mine seems to be staying the same.
Not busy at miraflores like they were at the locks last night, huh
That tanker going under the bridge right now is headed east - if you look at the map on the blog page the bridge is east of the Pedro locks and not between the two locks. So that view won't show us Zac unless he hasn't reached the Pedro locks yet - am I right on that PapaJock?
Maybe the Canal site will post shot of Zac in their "Memorable transits " section, below the live web cam shots.
Laurence just called to say that they are about 10 minutes from the Miraflores Locks. There is a message on the boat for me - today is our anniversary!!
Marianne
Oh great. An eclipse is about to occur over the Miraflores Lock :-)
I think you're right, Tomi. I looked at the screen shot I took. Hard to tell, but it really looked like Intrepid.
Papajock
Well, phooey - for some reason the web cams are not working for me at work, and I was going to spend lunch watching! Sure hope that someone records again like the gatun locks (thanks to Jeffery!) -- will be fun to show the kids this evening regardless. Happy lock/Intrepid watching to you all! Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
Did he really pass thru centenial bridge. Doesnt he need Cat for Miraflores
Well, happy anniversary to Marianne & Laurence!!
Karyn
Has Zac already passed Miraflores??
Check google Earth. pedro is northwest of Flores and Bridge is northwest of pedro.
B mac
People on the top of the building at bottom of screen. Are they there to watch Zac?
Happy Anniversary Marianne and Laurence!!! What a unique way to celebrate! :)
Happy Anniversary Marianne & Laurence!
Happy Anniversary, Marianne.
On my computer, the Miraflores Hi-Res is running about 7 minutes behind real time.
Papajock
Happy anniversary, Marianne and Laurence! Not the typical anniversary celebration, but one with true meaning for your family.
Happy Anniversary Marianne
glad we are sharing it with you!
Happy Anniversary Marianne and Laurence. Now we simply can't miss the transit as we want to see the message. J
There are close up shots of Intrepid on the Expansion Cam
Congratulations Marianne and Laurence !! what a wonderful anniversary present
Rock On Zac
The Pedro Miguel/Centennial bridge cam just changed - sure looks like the on the lower left.
How much fun is this? Two celebrations at once!
Catamaran and sailboat together in shot from Centennieal bridge - oh it just changed again but they were there and headed away from the locks!
There they ARE
The Centennial Bridge cam has changed direction and is now pointing at a small sail craft
Centennial Bridge cam showing Intrpeid and Pura Vida (catamaran) right now!!
Marianne
may be a couple of small boats coming into view on hi res screen
Hey, folks-
Everyone at our Alaska radio station is glued to the Mireflores hi-res.
Nice day in panama. Go Zac
Kodiak Mike
KMXT
You can see them now coming into the Mirafloures - look to right of red tanker - I think that is them
Looks like they'll be entering the far side lock.
Looks like they're going to the far side lock, but we should still get some great views.
papajock
Awesome. That was them. And the freight with the blue and white funnel is the one we are seeing the back of in the Mira cam.
Finally got something to show - hopefully I'll get the chance to see them soon!
Congratulations and Happy Anniversary, Marianne & Lawrence!
Peace, Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
"UK friend", if you are still unable to connect to Miraflores webcam and you want to send yr email address to stover@hvc.rr.com I will email the hi-res input to you.
I don't care who you are, this is WAY COOL!
Joe Howell/Valparaiso FL/ watching from ELY, UK
They are approaching Mia Flores right now
Maurice
on low res I can see them on high res they are not there yet
OMG, SO cool. Thanks for sharing. This has been an awesome experience. West Hills, CA
Look at all the folks lined up to watch! Green roof, bottom right of Miraflores (sp?) cam.
They will be next in lock on hi res camera
I am watching on regular web cam and Dh has hi res on. Right now I am seeing a great shot of cat and zac together with large tanker behind him. unforbunately cannot see the lock so we might lose them in a minute, but the hi res cam is some minutes behind so we can watch twice. looking for that message. Gasp this is exciting. Even DH is excited now, he has gone through on huge ships. J
Got 'em good now!! Far side.
papajock
It couldn't be more beautiful, Intrepid is right in the middle of the Miraflores web cam.XO
UK friend.... nope, it won't work, sorry!!
Yeaaa we can see them!
now I have them on both :-)
The Miraflores Locks Camera, not he high resolution, will have the closeup shots when they are in the lock. Their close up will show Zan and company in a large picture.
Holy Catamarn. i just lost my connection to miraflores.
UK Friend --- Are you with us?
Very cool and really exciting - it's like being there - almost, just not hot and humid.
Hi-res seems to be about 5 mins delayed
Who are these wonderful people running the web cams?! They have Centenial camera zoomed way in on Zac entering Miraflores. Spectacular!
Crowd of spectators on the roof just got bigger!
low res cam is zoomed in on them, people on the decks :-)
i just got it back! seems like the camera zoomed in on intrepid but it was blurred
This is even cooler than the Blue Angels who are flying over my house right now practicing for tomorrow's show at the Academy
This is so exciting, I am actually sitting here crying. I don't even know the family! I've been following since Zac set sail and today is the first day I posted (twice!). West Hills, CA Yay Go ZAC. Happy Anniversary !!!
lost them, move that camera, please. Gotts see that message, ah there they are. Bless you camera operator. Now zoom in. Pleasse. J

papajock
So glad I'm not the only one grabbing for tissues! I can't believe how excited I am for Zac and so full of pride for someone I have never met! Go Zac!
Wow! I almost missed it! Just opened the webcam to see them centre-stage!
DD (UK)
on my computer, it looks like the 2 miraflores webcams are showing roughly the same thing at roughly the same time, but the timestamp on the camera feeds are different! odd.
this is so COOL
Rock On Zac
Excellent pics, and it's good that the camera is following Zac! I'm watching on the high res and the expansion cam.
Pity they are not in the nearer lock, though. Let's hope nothing slips into the nearer lock!
DD (UK)
This is just very, very cool - way to go Zac! What a proud moment for all of us who have followed him and his family this far... Like a glimpse of what it will feel like for all of us when he lands in CA, so very soon really... Marianne - you are awesome! Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
cool! the water level just went down.
by the way, the screen shots I got earlier, at the bridge, were Intrepid and Pura Vida, but from the Pura Vida side.
There's Zac!! Close up on low res
Little Intrepid is dropping out of sight!
Canal party in Laura's office!
big zoom on low res
A loud cheer from the students of St. Gregory as Zac enter the Miraflores Lock. How awesome is that.

Happy anniversary to you parents of the adventurer!
Don T
Easley, SC
i can see 4 people on the decks. very cool.
Did anyone see the message Mariannne mentioned?
No, you didn't miss it, the water is still going down in the lock!
I wish I'd pulled the ethernet out of my laptop - that would have kept them in full view! The refresh has had go out of sight! :(
I am SO sad!!!!!!!!
Oh well no worries, I'm sure someone will have it posted.
@Sherna.....nice you noticed I was MIA LOL!! :)
I was out working on my boat!!
This has been one amazing experience...so happy to see Zac...so happy for him...so happy for his family....so happy for all who have made this trip possible thus far...YEH!
Thank you Lord.
Glad you caught it DD...a bit earlier than expected eh.
At least we won't be up til 2am!
UK friend
looks like they are holding a ship for the right lock
Whoa, big freighter! Please don't block our view!!!
THIS IS SO COOL!
Marianne - I know you will be anyway, but be sure and pass on our heartfelt thanks to your contacts at Panama Canal for making these wonderful shots possible for all of us to see - last night was exciting, and today has been absolutely breathtaking. Many, many thanks! Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
If you missed it there is a button at the bottom next to request angle change, 'last 20 photos' try it out.
Oh no Anita....Wombat wouldn't wait.
I think it is earlier then we all expected. Surely someone will have it posted.Hope so.
UK friend
Will Zac stop after he drops off line handlers and pilot or will he keep going into the Pacific/
One more lock* and he's into the Pacific. Welcome "home," Zac!
* The last gate of the 2 Miraflores locks.
Did anyone get a screen capture when they were centre-stage before the water level started to drop?
DD (UK)
PS - Correct, UK Friend - only just saw them - really lucky. After last nights vigil - nice to get great view on the superb hi-res cam!
Thanks guys!!! Hope it was a good show!!! I can't get the site to load a photo...y'all have overwhelmed the system!!! :)
Low res cam is panning as they move!
I am going to e mail the Panama Miraflores Lock authority later to say a huge Thank You for letting us see our young hero. This has been amazing. J
There is a number on the boat looks like 19?? can anyone else read it?
Bye, Zac...
Have a great last leg!
Don T
And then they were gone :(
On low rez, was that line handler Laurence with a Panamanian hat? :-)
Low rez looks like it will follow them through, hi res looks like its fixed.
zac pac - not over yet - look at the regular cam, not the high res - more of zac!!!
Look at low res cam shot - still following the boats
Then he was goneeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Amazing, and not your average day in our household!
Not sure I could cope with all this more than once in a lifetime!
AWESOME.
UK friend
low res currently has better view...
how many locks at miraflores 2?
DD (UK) I got a whole series of screen shots - I'll try to assemble them and post them somewhere useful (but first I have to take a sick kid to the doc)
I got a screen of the sign, I think it was jenn holding :-)
Oh shoot! Didn't realise they were panning the low res! AWESOME!
Great close up now!
Great zoomed in picture now. Zac at the helm.
WOW TJ thanks that is AWESOME !!!

ok, now the tears - right here in middle of work! - the close up with the US flag, Intrepid, Zac & Lawrence with crew - beautiful! Can't make out the sign, though - looks like someone young holding it??? Your Oklahoma Well-Wisher
Have to email the canal guys to say thanks!
Marianne, are you weeping?
Marianne, I can see the message with the words LOVE flying in between the shrouds port side. that is so special.
OH MY GOSH.....can you believe those pictures of ZAC!
They have done that for us....surely they dont normally wizz the cameras around like that...how cool is that.....thank you miraflores camera operators...
UK friend
nice photo with american flag waving, close ups blurred
This is incredible and I am enjoying it SO much. Thank you Zac for doing this wonderful thing for all of us to be part of.
Has anyone tried printing? I just printed out that last close up! Came out pretty good! The American Flag is clear and beautiful!
TJ - Thanks!
DD (UK)
Great camera operator. Many thanks to Pancanal.com or who ever operates it right now.
sign says love
And he still hasn't cut his hair. but who cares.
A few months ago, a crew member on a transiting yacht, help up a sign asking his girlfriend to marry him.
Panan Canal is very special!
Also getting some GREAT screen shots (bitmaps) of Intrepid, et al in the lock. Wonderful job by the canal camera-folks! A big thanks to them!
I just hope that if Mike Perham goes through the Canal we will get the same opportunity to follow him. There is no web cam at Cape Horn!. Another amazing young man.
TJ...hope sick child is soon on the mend.
UK friend
What a wonderful morning. I cant believe i am crying, cant begin to imagine what Marianne is feeling. Hooray for the Sunderlands. The little ones must be excited too?

john baker
There's no email address on that page - only a postal address.
I had thought of that! :)
DD (UK)
he's still in the second lock!
Whoa - gone. Maybe the camera will turn one more time - hopefully
Welcome back to your "Home Ocean" Captain! Nice to have you back on this side of the world!
There's an email at "Request Angle Change" ccvm-uso@pancanal.com
@Anon with web cam email address!
Great! Saw that the other day and forgot about it! And, indeed, that must be the most relevant one for a note of thanks to be sent to!
