The Miraflores Locks

Hello All,
I spoke with the boys this morning and all was well. They were indeed delayed last night entering the Gatun Locks. They anchored in Lake Gatun for what was left of the night and were up early this morning making their way with their pilot, Fernando, towards the next locks. First should be the Pedro Miguel Lock - a single lock. Next will be the Miraflores Locks (a set of three) which have an excellent web cam at the following link:

http://www.pancanal.com/eng/photo/camera-java.html

The estimated time of arrival at Pedro Miguel is 9:00amPDT/12:00EDT 1600Z.

Not much warning, I know. Zac didn't expect to be passing through so quickly this morning.

I don't think we will have the problems seeing Intrepid like we had last night - the web cams at Miraflores are very clear. We will be meeting on the blog comments (at the end of this blog post) if you care to join us. You don't need to have a Google account - you can post anonymously and then sign your name at the end of your post.

Take Care & Enjoy!

Marianne

Miraflores Locks is two miles from Pedro Miguel. Do you mean they are going through Pedro Miguel right now (in about 30 minutes) and then straight through to Miraflores Locks and through them, or will they have to hang around for several hours before going through Miraflores Locks??

Good questions! They should be approaching Pedro Miguel Lock soon and then expect about 30 minutes (not certain) until Miraflores Locks. Could there be a delay? You bet!

CAMERA ANGLES

On the Camera at Centennial Bridge, Intrepid will coming onto the screen from the bottom right, as Zac exits Pedro Miguel.

After that, on the Camera at Miraflores, Intrepid will be coming towards the camera.

Hope this helps...

What's the plan after this final lock? Is Zac going to pull over somewhere and say his goodbyes, or head straight out to the Pacific. If this final lock take's all of the next two hours only, got some good day light hours left to navigate the rest of the canal, the gulf of panama and finally 'turn right' and head on up home.

At the moment, the canal traffic appears to all be heading north/east/Atlantic-bound. From watching these cams regularly over many months, I am nearly certain that 1) traffic only moves one direction at a time (for several hours), and 2 moves directly from Pedro Miguel to Miraflores. North of PM (where Zac will be coming *from* is the narrow Gaillard cut. The Centennial Bridge and Expansion Program cams often show the south/west/Pacific end of this cut and would show Zac passing under the bridge.
As I write, the Centennial Bridge cam is showing a closeup of the Pedro Miguel lock. This, as well as the Miraflores cam, would show Zac well.

Zac should pass from the Centennial Bridge then on to the Pedro Miguel Lock. He should be somewhere in that area now. There is a map of the canal on his blog a few days ago. It shows the route well.

now (12:18 eastern) the camera is looking toward the bridge and showing a sailboat in the canal (not the lock) - now an even closer shot - is that Zac? (sorry, poor boat recognition skills here!) If so, how totally cool!

It appears that someone is panning the Centennial Bridge cam, like they are looking for something/someone. Presumably the camera operator will not know Intrepid, only that someone is interested in seeing a "sailboat" make the transit. Keep watching, and hopefully someone who knows Intrepid will confirm Zac's passage.
